Geingob denies involvement in Air Nam debacle

The office of President Hage Geingob yesterday said the president had nothing to do with the non-renewal of Jacqui Dadford contract with Air Namibia.
Dadford lost her job a manager of the airline’s office at the Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg after she had a run-in with the founder of the Kora Awards, Ernst Adjovi, at the airport earlier this year.

Negonga, Iita lose reinstatement bid

Former accounting officers Erastus Negonga and Joseph Iita yesterday suffered a major blow after the High Court dismissed their appeal to get their government jobs back.
Iita, the former permanent secretary in the ministry of agriculture, and Negonga, ex-PS at the gender ministry, were involved in a legal battle with the government to get their jobs back after the Cabinet Secretariat terminated their contracts in April of last year. Judge Harald Geier handed down the ruling yesterday.

Freaky weather catches Walvis Bay off guard

A thunderstorm accompanied by strong winds caught Walvis Bay residents by surprise on Monday evening.
It left flooded streets, uprooted trees and damaged roofs in its wake.
From April to May rains could still occur in Namibia while temperatures slowly start to drop. From June to September it is winter and no more rain is received except in the far south.
Monday night’s freak weather started with a drizzle at 21:00, which became a heavy downpour accompanied by thunder and lightning that lasted until 07:00 the next morning.

Life inside the Swapo camp

Just 20km north of Windhoek is the home of the so-called struggle kids where more than 200 men, women and children are living in tents in deplorable circumstances on Swapo land.
The group, who were moved to the property last December, have been awaiting jobs they say were promised to them by the ruling party when they were relocated to the Ndilimani Cultural Troupe Farm from the Swapo headquarters in Katutura.

Murder accused waits for bail appeal ruling

Kai Rust, 43, the alleged killer of a suspected poacher, will hear a ruling in his appeal against bail refusal on 27 June.
Rust lodged an application for appeal after Magistrate Masule Kwizi in February this year dismissed his bail application.
Rust has been in custody since 26 January. He faces a charge of murder, three counts of attempted murder, and counts of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
He had allegedly spotted four suspected poachers skinning a kudu they had just killed on the farm Otukaruno about 25km from Okahandja along the Hochfeld road.

Ministry removes poaching suspects from Etosha

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism has finally followed a recommendation made by the first commander of the Etosha anti-poaching unit to transfer officials linked to poaching.
Last year retired police commissioner Ndahangwapo Kashihakumwa identified a group of ministry employees involved in poaching and forwarded the evidence to Minister Pohamba Shifeta and Nampol Inspector-General Sebastian Ndeitunga.
Kashihakumwa, who was commanding the anti-poaching unit, recommended that these employees either be transferred or suspended pending investigations.

‘Chucky’ comes out swinging

“I am a champion and I will leave as a champion.”
Mexican WBA super bantamweight world champion Moises ‘Chucky’ Flores made this simple statement upon his arrival for the super fight against Namibian Paulus ‘The Rock’ Ambunda.
The fight will take place on Saturday at the Ramatex Hall in Windhoek.
Flores, who is accompanied by his manager, Henry Rivalvi, and trainer, Rafael Guzman, was expected to arrive just before noon yesterday but having missed his connecting flight only touched down in the afternoon.

Keshi’s death causes shockwaves in Namibia

The death of Nigeria’s former superstar player and coach Stephen Keshi has rocked the football world.
Keshi died in the early hours of yesterday after suffering a heart attack, according to reports.
The former defender was 54 years old and according to his brother Ado, had shown no signs of illness.
“It is true, my brother has passed on. He has gone to meet his wife,” Ado said, referring to Kate, Keshi’s wife of 35 years, who died last year after a long battle with cancer.

Policeman killed at roadblock

A police officer manning the checkpoint between Windhoek and Okahandja died when he was hit by a truck driver on Tuesday night.
Constable Desmond Gaseb (24) was in uniform and was wearing a reflective jacket when the accident occurred.
NamPol spokesperson Inspector Matheus Slogan told Namibian Sun that the officer was standing on the white line dividing the road lanes when the truck belonging to Namibia Beverages approached the roadblock from the Okahandja side.

Subcontractor threatens to destroy property

A subcontractor has threatened to demolish a number of structures put up at an Omaheke school in protest against non-payment by a contractor.
The company, Obedient Investment cc, was contracted by MRP Namibia to construct a hostel, teachers’ accommodation and other facilities at the Otjiuaneho Primary School in the Omaheke Region.
The project was part of the Namibian-German Special Initiative Programme (NGSIP) under the auspices of the National Planning Commission (NPC). MRP Namibia is owned by former Brave Warriors footballer Lucky Richter.

Affirmative Repositioning(AR) land activist Dimbulukeni Nauyoma said the youth will not be deterred by the government’s attempts to force them to abandon the #16June protests against the proposed new parliament building.
This follows sudden restrictions by the inspector-general of the Namibian police, Lieutenant-General Sebastian Ndeitunga, on all public demonstrations from 13 to 18 June.

N$24bn needed to solve water crisis

A national drought emergency, linked to the hard-hitting water crisis in central Namibia and other areas, could be declared in a matter of days.
This follows a high-level meeting between President Hage Geingob, Cabinet and a team of experts from several water authorities this week.
“As you know we are going through a difficult time. Water is life. If there is no water, there is a problem. There is no life,” Geingob said.

Access to healthcare continues to evade the poor. A number of hospitals and clinics have been abandoned unfinished by building contractors while others are said to lack doctors and equipment.
All this was revealed in regional councils’ reports submitted to the National Assembly.
In its report, the Otjozondjupa Regional Council complained about the Okondjatu Health Centre in the Okakarara Constituency which has been left uncompleted for more than three years.
The absence of an intensive care unit in the region led to unnecessary deaths, it said.

Welwitschias refuse to give up hope

The Windhoek Draught Welwitschias are determined to keep searching for their first victory in this year’s Currie Cup qualifying tournament.
The Namibian team will tomorrow play the Hino Valke (Falcons) at the Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park, which is located in the South African province of Gauteng.
That match is scheduled to start at 13:10 and will be aired live on DSTV’s SuperSport Six channel.
The Welwitschias are bottom of the Currie Cup qualifying group after eight matches and have only collected one point so far.
