No water for livestock at Etayi

Residents of Oshivanda shaNgatanga and surrounding villages in the Etayi Constituency of the Omusati Region are calling on the government to provide them with water tanks to save their livestock before they die of thirst.
The Okatale kaNembudu pond, which provides water to over a thousand animals from nine villages every day, is muddy and about to dry up.
Residents are worried about the water supply and say it should be regarded as an emergency.

Bondelswarts succession dispute challenged in court

The application disputing the succession to the chieftainship of the Bondelswarts Nama traditional authority was postponed to give the applicant, Hendrick Christiaan, time to file answering statements on the replying affidavits of the traditional authority and its interim chief.
Christiaan, who is appearing in person in his challenge against the nomination of Johannes Matroos as a candidate for the election as the traditional leader of Bondelswarts Nama tribe, was granted a postponement.
The Bondelswarts traditional authority and Matroos are the respondents in the matter.

Operation Rhino nabs eight suspects

Anti-poaching operations in the Etosha National Park between March and June this year have led to the arrest of eight suspects linked to rhino poaching.
Three rhino carcasses with horns still intact were also discovered during the same period.
Six rhino horns were confiscated from the eight suspects, and preliminary investigations suggest that these horns originated from rhinos poached in Namibia’s flagship park.

SADC signs EU EPA today

Today marks the next important deadline in Namibia and the rest of the SADC region’s efforts to secure duty-free trading.
Representatives from Namibia join their regional counterparts in Gaborone today for the final signing of the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) of the European Union with the SADC member states. This follows signing by the EU during the session of the Foreign Affairs Council earlier this year in Brussels.

Govt to subsidise homes for the poor

The Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Sophia Shaningwa, yesterday told parliament that the government would subsidise the 716 available houses built under the Mass Housing Project to enable low-income earners to afford them.
She said the ministry was in the process of selling the 716 houses in several towns.

Job won’t budge

The 16 June protest march against the new parliament’s construction will continue. This is according to Job Amupanda after a marathon meeting with Nampol Inspector-General Sebastian Ndeitunga.
According to Amupanda, his Affirmative Repositioning Movement (AR) hopes to convince the police to “agree” with them.
“They are still in their meetings as we speak,” he said late yesterday evening. “They still do not want the march to continue, but we hope to convince them otherwise, because we will march,” he told Namibian Sun.

Zimbabwean fans dazzle in Cosafa opening

The 2016 Cosafa Castle Cup kicked off at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Saturday.
Following the opening ceremony that took place at the same venue, Zimbabwe and Swaziland were first to take to the field of play.
The match proved to be quite exciting with Swaziland taking the lead through Felix Badenhorst, who is said to be a target for several South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs.
But what made the match even more exciting was the passionate support given by the Zimbabwean fans as their team went out in search on an equaliser.

Old Mutual Victory Race series kicks off

The Old Mutual Victory Race first leg kicked off at Oshakati Independence Stadium on Saturday 11 June, and has attracted many participants.
The Old Mutual Victory Race is a two-part road running series in that it is divided into two distances of 21km and 5km, with junior and senior categories in the male and female sections.
The series takes place in four locations around Namibia - Windhoek, Oshakati, Swakopmund, and Keetmanshoop.

FNVA donates volleyball equipment to Kunene schools

The Far Northern Volleyball Association (FNVA) has donated volleyball equipment to Otjerunda Combined School (CS) and Kamanjab CS in the Kunene Region for development of the sport code at these schools.
FNVA Chairperson Mwita Sikopo handed over the equipment to representatives of the two schools at Oshakati in the Oshana Region last Thursday.
Kaunda Tukunapi from Otjerunda CS and John Negumbo from Kamanjab CS received the equipment on behalf of their respective schools.

Catholic farms not for sale

Roman Catholic Bishop Phillip Pöllitzer of the Keetmanshoop diocese has denied allegations that he is selling off the Stampriet and Witkrans missions in the
//Kharas Region.
Members of the Catholic community in the area raised alarm because they are convinced that Bishop Pöllitzer is in the process of selling the properties “in an inexplicable manner” to a Namibian businessman Frank Damascho who is in partnership with a South African company.

Flores wins epic clash

Mexican fighter, Moises ‘Chucky’ Flores lived up to his promise to produce a great boxing spectacle on his way to adding the IBO super bantamweight world title to his WBA one.
The Mexican beat Paulus ‘The Rock’ Ambunda by unanimous points’ decision (114-111; 115-112; 115-110) after a pulsating 12 rounds in the fight that took place at Ramatex on Saturday.
Both boxers had promised to give their all in the ring and so it proved on Saturday with Flores and Ambunda trading blows from the onset.

12 dead in 28 car crashes

It was a deadly weekend on Namibian roads with 12 dead in 28 crashes. Of these, the most deadly were in the north and on the Windhoek-Okahandja route. A head-on collision near Outapi killed six on Saturday. Five people including a driver died at the scene, while another one died at Outapi district hospital on Saturday night after two pick-ups collided head-on near Outapi.

Roughly 70% of Namibians rely directly or indirectly on agriculture to survive and the current prevailing drought is crippling more than just the farmers. The economy as a whole, but particularly that of the rural areas, is in serious trouble. This is the view of agricultural economist Andre Mouton.
“The smaller towns that need the financial support from farmers to continue to provide work and services, will suffer the most and farmers, who are critical for food production, will take many years to bounce back from this crisis,” he said.

City targets car washes

The City of Windhoek met with a number of car-wash owners in order to identify strategies and solutions that will ensure achievable long-term water usage regulations for the industry.
These include a 15-litre water limit per vehicle washed, which the City has put in place for car washes, a goal those present at the meeting said was unachievable and unrealistic.
Several owners noted that business had dropped by as much as 40% over the past year, and many were facing retrenchment.

Swapo reneged on independence deal

Former SWATF and Koevoet members have been urged to challenge the government in court on the constitutionality of the War Veterans’ Act.
The executive director of the Forum for the Future (FFF), Samson Ndeikwila, says the War Veterans’ Act of 2008 is “indefensible” and must be amended to be inclusive of all Namibians.
Ndeikwila said the Act was put in place to benefit the ruling Swapo elite, Oshiwambo speakers and some Swapo members, commenting that public funds are used in this way to mobilise people in favour of the ruling party.

Kaumbi throws spanner into CEO appointment

A cloud of uncertainty hangs over the head of newly appointed National Housing Enterprise (NHE) chief executive Gisbertus Mukulu after a senior manager in the parastatal, Uazuva Kaumbi, sought a court order to stop Mukulu’s appointment.
Kaumbi’s appeal to the Labour Court on Friday, suing the National Housing Enterprise, Mukulu and Minister of Urban and Rural Development Sophia Shaningwa, comes barely a fortnight after Mukulu’s appointment as CEO for the next five years.

Kapia keeps up denial

Paulus Kapia, the former leader of the Swapo Party Youth League, is still denying that he influenced the management of the Social Security Commission (SSC) to invest N$30 million with Avid, in which Swapo had shares.
Kapia, who was also a member of the National Assembly on a Swapo ticket, served as a Deputy Minister of Works, Transport and Communication. He told the High Court yesterday that during a meeting with the SSC managers he emphasised that they should not invest their money with Avid if they felt uncomfortable.
