Minister in dark about NWR strife

Both environment minister Pohamba Shifeta and his deputy, Tommy Nambahu, remain in the dark about a planned strike by Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) workers which was put on hold at the eleventh hour.
The parastatal announced yesterday the strike was averted and wage talks with the union would continue.
According to NWR spokesperson Mufaro Nesongano a letter was sent to Shifeta’s office in regard to the matter, but the minister told Namibian Sun that he was unaware of this state of affairs.

Green lawns despite restrictions

While many gardens in Windhoek are dying as a result of strict water restrictions, a complaint was recently made that the lawn and flowerbeds at the office of the vice-president continue to be watered during the water crisis.
Well-placed sources furthermore told Namibian Sun this week that several government and public institutions continue to flout City of Windhoek water restrictions by continuing to water lawns and flowers with potable water despite the zero tolerance policy.

Northern railway earthworks in full swing

The bulk earthworks for the construction of the railway line between Ondangwa and Oshakati is in full swing after 150 people volunteered their labour, including Founding President Sam Nujoma.
The earthworks for the 28-km rail line will cost the government about N$245 million. That amount excludes a N$40 million bridge, the railway itself and a station to be built in Oshakati.

Casablanca accident truck driver denied legal aid

The truck driver who was involved in a crash that killed 15 people near Casablanca on the Omuthiya-Oshivelo road will not get a state-funded lawyer. Junias Kotokeni Kiingala (32) appeared before Tsumeb Magistrate Isabela Mutimba this week. He was informed that his income allows him to acquire private legal representation. The case was postponed to 19 October for further investigation. Kiingala is charged with 15 counts of culpable homicide for his involvement in the collision with a minibus on 12 February. Kiingala is free on warning.

Rössing Pension Fund’s surplus allocation set aside

The distribution of the Rössing Pension Funds surplus funds is back to the drawing board. The situation is obliging the trustees of the Rössing Pension Fund to consider a formula that would be acceptable to all involved in the distribution of the N$450 million surplus funds.
Windhoek High Court Judge Shafimana Ueitele on Wednesday set aside the formula in accordance of which 15% of the fund was to be allocated to the former members and 33% to Rössing Uranium Limited through a three-year contribution.

Huts as classrooms in Oshikoto

Regional councils have bemoaned the state of education in their regions in their quarterly reports to the National Council. Among the challenges is a lack of toilets, classrooms and qualified teachers.
According to the Oshikoto Region’s report, the region’s lack of educational infrastructure is so bad that teaching is taking place in about 450 traditional huts. The region also lacks qualified teachers.

Convicted murderer kills himself

A Rehoboth man who was who was convicted of murder earlier this year had served less than four months of his 40-year sentence when he committed suicide last week.
Bryan Riecket (37) hanged himself with a bed sheet at the Katutura State Hospital on Wednesday evening. Riecket was guarded by prison staff while in hospital.
The police have opened an inquest docket and an investigation has started.

Struggle kids’ march still on

The struggle kids camping at the Swapo regional office in Oshakati say a visit by Swapo secretary-general Nangolo Mbumba on Friday was pointless and they will continue with a planned protest march to Windhoek tomorrow.
After months of waiting for Mbumba to visit them, the protesters were not satisfied with the outcome of the half-hour meeting where they were told to be patient and wait for employment opportunities from different ministries without being given a time frame.

Mayor recalls vendors to prohibited areas

Mayor of Ondangwa Paavo Amwele allowed evicted street vendors to return to prohibited areas after a council meeting had decided to evict them.
Last week Tuesday Ondangwa Town Council representatives gave street vendors selling at prohibited areas alongside the main road a 24-hour ultimatum to vacate those spots. The vendors had been ignoring repeated instructions from the council for months.
Namibian Sun was reliably informed by a source in the council that most of the vendors complied with the order but others approached the council offices to complain.

Endjala delivers his SORA

Omusati Governor Erginus Endjala on Friday delivered his State of the Region Address (SORA) enlightening the nation on what’s happening in the region.
Endjala’s hour-long speech touched on many aspects which were later criticised by some who attended who told Namibian Sun that the SORA was a waste of their time adding that the nation was misled with too much information.
The critics made reference to the fact that members of the community were not given a chance to air their views as only councillors were permitted to do so.

Couple stab each other over going out

An argument over whether to go out or stay home ended in tragedy, when a 21-year-old Windhoek woman stabbed her 21-year-old boyfriend to death.
According to police reports, Romeo Eichab’s girlfriend was opposing to his idea to go out on Friday night.
During the fight, Eichab allegedly stabbed the woman with a knife. She allegedly grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed Eichab in the chest. Eichab was rushed to hospital but was declared dead upon arrival. The woman was arrested.

Grey water is a lifeline for Windhoek

The City of Windhoek has under heavy fire from residents after it published a public notice forbidding the use of grey-water systems, the use of semi-purified water on residential premises and the storage of drinking water.
Besides the regulations themselves, the tone of the notice was also criticised.
In a letter to the municipality, concerned residents said they “did not take kindly to being steamrolled”. Others questioned whether the regulations were in line with existing laws.

Land reform is a failure - Swartbooi

Deputy land minister Clinton Swartbooi has criticised his ministry’s land-reform programme, saying it is a “total failure” driven by "ahistorical" principles.
According to him the country would have been closer to a significant transformation of the land question if it had been done as stipulated by President Hage Geingob in his thesis.
“You cannot just treat land like a commodity. People have lost land since the 13th century especially the people from the South. If you look at the trajectory of land deprivation of certain ethnic groups it has been constant,” he said.

'I won't be silenced'

Lands deputy minister Clinton Swartbooi says he stands by his position that there is no justification for the construction of a new parliament building.
The plan has been frowned upon by many and has been labelled as a misplaced priority on the part of government. There have conflicting reports regarding the exact cost of the building, with some media reports indicating that it will cost taxpayers as much N$4 billion, while some have reported that government will spend over N$2 billion on the project.

Two men survive lion attack

Two men, a farmer the Omangetti farming area in the Oshikoto Region and a Ministry of Environment and Tourism employee, survived an attack by a wounded lioness.
They suffered several bites before shooting the lioness, which had two cubs.
The two men, aged 59 and 60, were rushed to the Oshivelo clinic and then transferred to the Tsumeb Hospital where they underwent surgery. One of them was transferred to the Oshakati State Hospital.
