Namibians faked Zimbabwean qualifications

A case in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court against 19 people arrested in 2014 for allegedly forging academic qualifications has been postponed to 1 July for plea.
The suspects were arrested on suspicion that they had submitted fake qualifications from bogus colleges in Zimbabwe.
Some of them allegedly submitted fake qualifications to several institutions of higher learning for admission to further studies. Nine of them used the bogus qualifications to secure jobs in the Namibian Defence Force and Windhoek City Police.

Dangerous myths dispelled

Drinking tombo during pregnancy will not result in your child being born with a light skin.
This was just one of the myths tackled on Saturday at the Ongwediva Medipark by nursing sister Nangula Angula, who addressed about 200 women as part of the Safe Motherhood campaign.
“It is not true that drinking tombo during pregnancy will increase the chance of you giving birth to a light-skinned baby.
“It is not true that eating oranges during pregnancy will make you give birth to an orange baby.

Water crisis spreads

As surface water and boreholes dry up, many towns are tightening their water-supply belts or are forced to reduce usage through restricted water supply from the authorities.
Most of the towns facing a water crisis are situated in central Namibia, but the crisis is extending to Karasburg in the south and several towns in the Erongo Region.
John Shigwedha, NamWater spokesperson, yesterday confirmed that apart from Windhoek, Okahandja, Okakarara and Karibib are in the red.

Man dies in Western Bypass crash

One man died on impact while six other people sustained injuries when three vehicles collided on Windhoek’s Western Bypass road yesterday morning.
A City Police spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent Cillie Auala, said the incident occurred before 07:00.
Witnesses told police at the scene that a grey Toyota sedan coming from the direction of Khomasdal indicated to turn left into Pionierspark.

Struggle kids set June 7 for Windhoek trip

More than 100 struggle kids camping at the Oshakati, Grootfontein and Rundu Swapo Party regional offices on Saturday agreed to march on Windhoek if their demand for jobs is not met by June 7.
The group leaders of the three camps told Namibian Sun yesterday that if Swapo secretary-general Nangolo Mbumba does not visit any camp or sent a representative from his office by next week Tuesday they would take their protest to the capital city.
The group of unemployed youth are demanding jobs and insist on talking to Mbumba directly.

Oshana educators slam the system

Oshana educators and learners have described the country’s education system as complicated and in need of transformation, while at the same time bemoaning the late arrival of stationery and textbooks, and the pathetic state of classrooms and teachers’ housing.
A one-day symposium, held last Friday at Ongwediva, brought together learners, parents, teachers, school heads of department, school board members and principals from all the schools in the region to find ways to boost performance.

Big breather for trade account

Namibia’s trade deficit stood at N$4.15 billion during the first quarter of 2016, a significant decline of 62% compared to a revised figure of the previous quarter in which the deficit was estimated to be N$10.92 billion. Compared to the same quarter a year ago the deficit fell by 30%, the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) says. Namibia imported goods to the tune of nearly N$17.9 billion during the first three months of 2016, of which 55% was from South Africa. Read more about Big breather for trade account

NSFAF under fire

The Namibian Student Financial Assistance Fund (NSFAF) is under fire once again.
The student funding body, which is already being investigated by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over alleged tender irregularity, is now accused of awarding a N$1.1 million tender for the outsourcing of ICT management services, months after informing bidders that the tender had been cancelled.
The controversy surrounding the IT tender has also been picked up by the Ministry of Public Enterprises, which yesterday confirmed that it was also investigating NSFAF.

Pastor appears in court for assault

Allegations of assault against a pastor of the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren Church in Namibia had a sequel in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Pedro Marcelino Moussongela made a brief appearance on charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, read in conjunction with the provisions of the Domestic Violence Act.
The matter was postponed to 28 November 2016 for plea and trial. Moussongela, who is already free on bail, was warned to appear in court on that date.

Dos Santos's Bank BIC gets green light

The Bank of Namibia (BoN) yesterday announced its approval of an application for a banking licence by Angola’s Bank BIC Namibia Ltd.
The approval means that Bank BIC Namibia is now permitted to offer full banking services in Namibia.
The approval follows an earlier, provisional authorisation granted by the central bank in October 2014.

Mother wants her child back

The woman who is suing Mennonite pastor Pedro Marcelino Moussongela for allegedly kidnapping her daughter demands to have her child repatriated to Namibia. From correspondence seen by Namibian Sun, the woman’s daughter and three other children of Moussongela are in the care of the London Borough of Haringey in England. An older sister is elsewhere in London.

Katima wants traditional huts out of town

The Katima Mulilo Town Council yesterday issued stern warnings to squatters who refuse to demolish illegal clay huts.
The council’s chief executive officer, Charles Nawa, told Namibian Sun that the illegal huts cannot be tolerated anymore as they are harming the town’s image.
Nawa said most of the huts are in the Dairy and Macaravan West and East informal settlements and the Cowboy settlement.
“There is a lot of illegal structures on the land of Katima. People are just building and they are building traditional houses in town,” he said.

Nam gets ready for Nations Cup

The Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) last week announced the team that will represent the country at the World Rugby Nations Cup in Romania next week.
Namibia will play Romania on Thursday, 9 June; Spain on Monday, 13 June and Emerging Italy on Saturday, 18 June.
With July’s Africa Cup fixtures in mind the NRU has also selected a few players to keep an eye on.
It is the NRU’s intention to select a national group of players that will make up the Nations Cup and Africa Cup squads of 27.

NHE names new CEO

The National Housing Enterprise yesterday announced in an internal memo the appointment of Gisbertus Mukulu as its new chief executive officer effective 1 July 2016.
Mukulu currently serves as Okahao Town Council CEO and will take over from Vinson Hailulu, who stepped down last August.
In the meantime, one of the parastatal’s board members, Elton Khoitage !Gaoseb, is acting in that position.
NHE spokesperson Eric Libongani yesterday also confirmed to Namibian Sun that Mukulu would take over the reins at the troubled enterprise in a month’s time.

Bail denied to hostel father accused of rape

The State yesterday successfully opposed bail in the case of Mervin Ngujapeua, a 48-year-old hostel caretaker facing 20 counts of rape of ten minor boys.
Otjiwarongo Magistrate Helvi Shilemba denied bail on the grounds that it would not be in the public interest to release the accused and that it is the duty of the court to protect the public.
Ngujapeua’s case was postponed to 7 July for further investigation, defence lawyer Milton Engelbrecht confirmed yesterday.
The alleged victims are now between 13 and 17 years old. The abuse allegedly began in 2013.

Ex-soldiers are waiting on Hage

The chairperson of the Namibia War Veterans Trust (NAMVET) this week said former SWATF/Koevoet members would only cease their protest sit-ins if President Hage Geingob expressed himself on their demand to be recognised as war veterans.
“We will go home if President Geingob can send us a letter to say that the government will not recognise us as war veterans or that we are not wanted. We will go home to either die or wait for the next president. But President Geingob is too quiet on the matter,” said NAMVET’s chairperson, Jabulani Ndeunyema on Tuesday.

New support for Cosafa Cup

The Confederation of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) yesterday announced that Telecom Namibia, under its subsidiary brand TN Mobile, had signed a partnership agreement for the 2016 Cosafa Castle Cup.
The tournament will be staged in Namibia from 11-25 June.
TN Mobile will be the official network and technology partner for the two-week festival of football that promises not only great entertainment, but also the chance to develop football in the Southern Africa region.
