Mining and exploration company Weatherly International yesterday announced its decision to make about 220 employees at its Otjihase and Matchless copper mines redundant.
Workers at the two mines were informed of the decision by management yesterday. In a statement detailing the development, Weatherly CEO Craig Thomas said the decision was based on continuing decline in global copper prices, which had fallen by over 40% since 2011.
Current conditions had rendered both mines “commercially unviable”, he said.
