Relatively new on the music scene, Veekay describes herself as an Afropop artist, but doesn’t restrict herself from exploring other genres.

Speaking to tjil, the singer shared that it took her about six months to complete her debut, ‘Tjiramue’.

“For my first ever album, I’d say the process and response was very much ecstatic. Even though I was open to a lot of productive criticism, the comments were heart-warming and I’m grateful for that,” she said.

On what she is hoping music fans grasp after listening to the album, Veekay mentioned joy and good vibes.

Clarifying on the album title, the singer said: “As much as the word tjiramue produces a lot of controversy, the concept behind it all is for you to always feel beautiful and comfortable in your own skin – like you are someone’s tjiramue,” Veekay said.

According to an article on Culture Trip by Rukee Kaakunga, the practice of otjiramue is when cousins get married to each other.

The tradition is a long-standing one which was developed to retain wealth and power within tribes and families in times of trouble.

Dropping soon

The album features big names including Kp Illest, Dice, Ethnix and more.

On production, Veekay recruited renowned producers including award-winning Mo Fire, Arafath and Andrew On The Beat.

The freshman singer said a new music video for the title track will be dropping on her YouTube channel soon.

“The song features Kp Illest and Ethnix, so be on the look out for that.”
