In a world where we are trying to move towards recognising everyone’s rights and eliminating hate speech and unjustified violence, the Orlando shootings come as another sobering reminder that we are a long way from achieving that universal goal. The violence in the United States echoes across the Atlantic Ocean and hits the mother continent of Africa in various spots; places that are well selected to amplify the violence and make sure that the impact is as devastating as the wars that preceded the violence that speaks of the African reality at present.

Brilliant Namibia win

Namibia’s full national rugby team twice came from behind to sensationally beat Spain 34-32 in their second match at the World Rugby Nations Cup yesterday afternoon.
The team did not enjoy a good first half when they took on the Europeans in the tournament, which is being hosted in Romania.
Although the team was first to score a try following an interception by JC Greyling, who had an easy passage to the try line, the team gave up their lead.

Ambunda vows to walk tall

Despite losing his IBO super bantamweight world title, Paulus ‘The Rock’ Ambunda will continue to hold his head high.
The Namibian said this while discussing how he lost his title on a unanimous points decision to Mexican Moises ‘Chucky’ Flores at the Ramatex building on Saturday.
Ambunda, who described the fight as “war”, was quite frank in his assessment of the judges’ final score.
“I accept everything as a man and as a boxer,” he said.

Tight matches at NTA Tennis League

The Namibia Tennis Association (NTA) 2016 tennis league continued on Saturday with two encounters in the men’s second division and three matches in the women’s second division.
In the men’s division, the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) team prevailed over CTC B by 13 to 7 points while OTB beat CTC C by 14 to 6 points.
In the women’s section, the OTB Ladies beat City of Windhoek by 13 to 7 points; the Police College team defeated CTC C by 14 to 6 points and DTS gave the NUST rookie team a tennis lesson with a clean sweep of 20 to 0 points.

Rivalry sparks fierce competition

St Paul’s College beat old rivals St George’s in their FNB Classic Clashes football match on Friday, 10 June.
The winning school claimed a 4-0 win.
The next day Delta was victorious against Jan Mohr as they secured a 1-0 win in the other Classic Clash match.
John Mbako of St George’s was named Vigo Hero for his leadership portrayed on and off the sport field and participation in athletics at national level, while Penda ya France, left winger of St Paul’s was named FNB Classic Clashes Man of the Match.

‘NGOs not run by angels’

Namibia Networks of Aids Service Organisations (Nanaso) executive director Sandy Tjaronda yesterday strongly opposed the idea of a regulatory body to review non-governmental organisations (NGOs) on an annual basis to get a grip on corruption.
This follows remarks by Brenda King, a member of the European Economic and Social Committee, yesterday at a press briefing during the current session of the ACP-EU joint parliamentary assembly, underway in Windhoek.

India and Namibia to talk business

Namibia can reap plenty of economic benefits from this week’s state visit by Indian President Shri Pranab Mukherjee.
Mukherjee, who arrives in the country today on a week-long visit, is expected to hold official talks with President Hage Geingob and will exchange views on bilateral, regional and multilateral issues of mutual interest, and explore new areas of cooperation.
According to political analyst Hoze Riruako, Namibia can benefit greatly from the visit of the leader of the fastest-growing economy in the world.

Chaka Chaka jets into Namibia

Unicef and AU goodwill ambassador Yvonne Chaka Chaka arrived at Walvis Bay International Airport on Tuesday.
“I am here to urge businesses and government to collaborate, break down barriers and ensure that the lives of Namibian children are improved,” Chaka Chaka, the Unicef goodwill ambassador on malaria and AU goodwill ambassador on prevention and response to violence against children and women, told journalists upon her arrival.

Chaka Chaka pledges to raise funds for children

Yvonne Chaka Chaka, accompanied by Deputy Minister of Gender Equality and Child Welfare Lucia Witbooi, visited the Sunshine Centre and Kids Haven childcare facilities in Walvis Bay yesterday.
“Some organisations come and go. The Sunshine Centre has been around for over 20 years. This shows the people here are sincere. I would gladly collaborate with other artists and fundraise for their cause,” pledged the songstress and humanitarian after her visit.

Municipal workers threaten to strike

About 150 Walvis Bay municipal workers on Tuesday threatened to down tools should council management not address their grievances by today.
The workers staged a peaceful march organised by the Namibia Public Workers Union (Napwu) with the intention of presenting a petition containing their grievances to local councillors. No councillors were present to receive the document.

Shalulile sends Highlands Park to PSL

Brave Warriors player Peter Shalulile sealed it for his South African club Highlands Park yesterday after beating Mbombela United in the promotion playoffs.
Shalulile’s two goals were enough to send his team to the elite league in the 2016/17 Absa Premiership season.
It was at the other end of the pitch where the opening goal was scored when a defensive error gave Shalulile the chance to hit the back of the net to give the hosts the lead in the 11th minute.

Loopholes in Forestry Act

The alleged harvesting of large mopane trees for charcoal production on a farm in the Outjo district is under investigation by the Department of Forestry following a written complaint.
As a result of the complaint, a grey area in the current Forestry Act and regulations related to wood harvesting on privately owned farms has come to light, questioning the reach of the current laws regulating wood harvesting on private farmland.

Chissano supports protest marches

Former Mozambican president Joaquim Chissano says he sees nothing wrong with public demonstrations and instead presidents must appreciate advice from their citizens.
Chissano, who was in Namibia to address the ACP-EU joint parliament session in Windhoek yesterday, said presidents must shy away from those who lead them astray.
According to him citizens must air their views and insist that their government listen to them if they do not agree with government plans.

Organised by the Affirmative Repositioning Movement, the mass protest against the envisaged N$2.2 billion parliament building has been a hot topic on social media and in the press.
In recent days, the controversy also involved the police, the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture, the Namibia National Teachers Union (Nantu) and the Namibia National Students Union (Namso).

Katrina vows AR demise

The education minister yesterday spat fire when she blamed Nantu, Nanso and the Affirmative Repositioning Movement (AR) for confusing the nation about the Day of the African Child.
She made it clear that as the duly appointed education minister she is the only person with the right to amend the school calendar if necessary.
This follows a string of allegations by the National Teachers Union (Nantu) and Namibia National Students Union (Nanso) that the minister is forcing teachers to work today while the day is marked as a school holiday on the school calendar.
