In what is expected to be a battle of the titans, the ruling Swapo Party next month will defend its decision to expel four of its youth wing members after a controversial fallout.
Now known as the ‘Swapo Four’, former youth leaders Elijah Ngurare, Job Amupanda, Dimbulukweni Nauyoma and George Kambala refused to accept their expulsion.

Broke union can’t afford auditor
The Namibia Transport and Taxi Union (NTTU), which blames the government for its financial woes, has accused the Labour Commissioner of victimising the union by requesting its annual financial reports, as required by the Labour Act.
The union has written a letter explaining to the Labour Commissioner why it has not submitted its 2014 audited reports.
Speaking to Namibian Sun yesterday, NTTU president Werner Januarie accused Labour Commissioner Henri Kassen of “victimising” the NTTU.

Cabinet reshuffle on the cards
After almost a year in office, President Hage Geingob is rumoured to soon announce his first Cabinet reshuffle.
Although the Presidency denies any knowledge of a reshuffle, Namibian Sun understands changes were necessitated by the poor health of Trade and Industry Minister Immanuel Ngatjizeko.

Refugees’ deportation halted
Botswana and Namibia’s determination to have Namibian refugees return to their home country suffered a blow this week, after a court in Botswana halted their deportation.
While most of the refugees in Botswana have returned to Namibia over the years, some have refused, citing fear of being tortured in Namibia, while other insist that they are not Namibians but Caprivians and will not return to
Namibia.
The refugees have been living at the Dukwe refugee camp in north-eastern Botswana since the failed secessionist bid in the then Caprivi Region in 1999.

Ongwediva 'Auasblick' in the making
A new N$80 million investment by Standard Bank in the business of local property development company Stantoll Properties will soon see the development of 325 erven at the Oshana Region town of Ongwediva, specifically catered to first-time home owners and students.
The bank this week announced that it was entering into a N$80 million financing facility with Stantoll Properties CC MD Ben Zaaruka to build what he called “a small Auasblick kind of housing development” at the town this year.

Inquest into death of ‘shebeen baby’
The police have opened an inquest docket into the death of a newborn baby that died in a shebeen in an informal settlement at Katima Mulilo.
The investigation will determine whether a charge of birth concealment will be brought against the 22-year-old mother. She failed to report the birth of the baby girl that she delivered by herself inside the shebeen where she works as bartender.
The dead baby, which weighed 3.2kg, was found wrapped in plastic bags and old clothes.
The baby’s body was discovered under a bed in the woman’s bedroom on Wednesday afternoon.

‘Beyonce Baartman’ raises eyebrows
Despite a representative of American singer Beyoncé Knowles refuting reports that Knowles is planning to make a movie of the tragic life story of Khoisan woman Sarah Baartman, the reports have sparked a debate about whether Americans should be telling stories about Africa and its people’s painful past.
Namibian actors and directors have joined their South African counterparts in condemning the reports.

Two burnt bodies found at dump
Security guards at a dumpsite in Windhoek made a gruesome discovery yesterday morning when they turned up for duty.
Checking on the source of smoke detected at the dump, the guards found the bodies of two women. They were burnt beyond recognition by car tyres placed around their bodies.
The police have discovered a SIM card in one of the victims’ jeans pockets which will hopefully assist in identifying her.

The struggle of Strydpan
A destitute family of nine have been braving rainstorms, Kalahari heat, hunger and thirst after their eviction from a government resettlement farm near Witvlei on Christmas Eve.
Former national soccer player Sylvester ‘Lolo’ Goraseb, who took the family under his wing, said the government must explain its decision to award a farm to a former Director of Land Reform in the Ministry of Lands and Resettlement and not to a group of landless farmworkers.

Suspected thief shot and killed
A 24-year old man, Florindo ‘Flo’ Njamba, was shot and killed, allegedly by a security guard, in Katutura yesterday morning.
According to the police, the security guard saw two men running across the street with a bag early yesterday morning.
The two men were allegedly searching through the bag when the security guard fired shots in their direction, hitting Njamba in the abdomen. Njamba later died at the Katutura State Hospital.
According to police spokesperson Slogan Matheus, the incident happened at around 03:00 in Aztec Street in the Nubuamis Location of Katutura. Read more about Suspected thief shot and killed

Uushona divorces his promoter
The former International Boxing Organisation (IBO) All-Africa champion welterweight champion, Bethuel ‘Tyson’ Uushona, is facing a new challenge after he parted ways with boxing promoter Nestor Tobias of Sunshine Academy.
The boxer informed Namibian Sun recently that he wants to work with different people that will help him improve his boxing career.
“I had to make a final decision and after seeking advice from different people and legally I came to a conclusion that I am no longer working with Sunshine, meaning I have to move on with my career,” he said.

More arrests in Kambwa theft case
Three more people have been arrested in a theft case that resulted in a building materials retailer in northern Namibia, Kambwa Trading, suffering losses of more than N$2 million.
Oshana Police Commissioner Rauha Amwele said Friday’s arrests brought to eight the number of people arrested in connection with the theft of building material.
“We cannot reveal the names of the three suspects until they appear in court, but what I can say is that the investigations are progressing well,” said Amwele.

Windhoek 'drags feet' on plots
The City of Windhoek has been accused of delaying the identification of plots for servicing under the Mass Urban Land-Servicing Programme but dismisses talk that it is protecting the interests of the elite.
The Walvis Bay council has serviced more than 1 000 plots while Oshakati has identified land for servicing, but the capital seems to be tied up in red tape.
The city council maintains that the delay is not deliberate but the result of technical hitches.

‘Free’ education pays off
A day before the start of the academic year, principals at Windhoek secondary schools have expressed gratitude at the introduction of universal secondary education.
They say they will now receive 100% of school fees, as the government pays N$500 per learner to the schools, whereas in the past only a few parents managed to pay the school development fund which has now been scrapped.

Possible suicide pact in Canyon
The bodies of two German citizens missing since Friday last week in the Fish River Canyon were found yesterday morning.
The mother (47) and daughter (28) had travelled to Namibia to collect the remains of two family members who died in a car crash in December.
Namibian Sun has been reliably informed that a suicide note was found among the women’s belongings.
