Namibia 'saddened' by Blatter football ban
Namibia Football Association (NFA) secretary-general Barry Rukoro has described the eight-year ban imposed on FIFA president Sepp Blatter as “sad”.
The Swiss national, along with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) boss Michel Platini, were on Monday suspended for eight years from all football-related activities following an independent ethics committee investigation.
“Blatter has been very good for Namibian football,” Rukoro yesterday told Namibian Sun.

Lack of cup action to hamper Brave Warriors
The absence of the annual Namibian Football Association (NFA) Cup will have a huge impact on the selection of players by the national team coach, says the body’s president, Frans Mbidi.
Mbidi told Namibian Sun yesterday that the absence of a cup competition before hosting Cosafa will have a big impact on selecting locally based players for the tournament.
He said, though, that the association has a Plan B that will see Brave Warriors coach Ricardo Mannetti and his technical team scouting for locally based players to join the Brave Warriors B team.

Opuwo gets its first traffic lights
The economic and administrative hub of the Kunene Region, Opuwo, on Thursday inaugurated its first set of traffic lights.
The traffic lights are situated at the corner of Mbumbijazo Muharukua Avenue and Sam Nujoma Drive. That is where the C41 road to Kamanjab and Ruacana meets the C43 road to Okanguati and Epupa Falls.
Kunene Regional Governor Angelika Muharukua inaugurated the traffic lights, saying: “I am proud to see these traffic lights being inaugurated in Opuwo. We are catching up with old towns like Otjiwarongo which has four traffic lights.”

Canned fish for drought relief
The Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Bernard Esau, last week received three truckloads of canned fish from the National Fishing Corporation of Namibia (Fishcor) to the government’s drought-relief programme.
Esau said the consignment would help feed starving people. He urged companies to join hands and donate other food items such as cooking oil and maize meal to supplement the fish.

The Anti-Corruption Commission is asking the help of the public in tracing Mahamed Shabani, a Tanzanian national.
Shabani is wanted on drug charges and is a person of interest in an ongoing investigation.

Nored supports road safety
The Northern Electricity Distributor, Nored, this week continued with its support of police operations meant to ensure safety on Namibian roads during the festive season.
Nored’s acting CEO Etegameno Indongo Antindi handed over 40 reflective jackets and 500 bottles of water to police offers manning the Oshiko roadblock at Ongwediva on Wednesday.
Two roadside banners were also erected on both sides of the road reminding road users to drive safely.

Govt takes over airport upgrade
Following controversies surrounding the upgrading of the Hosea Kutako International Airport outside Windhoek, it has now become a state project.
State House on Tuesday terminated the awarding of the tender, which was said to have been discussed by the Namibia Airports Company (NAC) without government involvement.
The tender was not in accordance with the government’s policy of transparent processes to minimise conflicts of interest, the statement read.

Diescho will know fate soon
The labour matter involving the executive director of the Namibia Institute of Public Administration and Management (NIPAM), Joseph Diescho, and his employer will only be settled in 2016 when officials return from holiday.
Diescho, a scholar, writer and political analyst, was shown the door by the Nipam board amid allegations of insubordination, failing to pay bills and overspending on his fringe benefits.
Nipam board chairperson and Cabinet Secretary George Simataa announced that Nipam was “cordially” parting ways with Diescho with a severance package of N$3.6 million

Namib Desert among top 10 beauty spots
Namibia’s Namib Desert has been named one of the ten most beautiful places in the world.
Conde Nast Traveller, one of the world’s premier travel magazines, recently released its list of the 50 most beautiful places in the world.
It listed the Namib Desert as the tenth most beautiful place in the world.
According to the website of Conde Nast Traveller, “the red sand dunes and skeletal trees make Namibia the closest thing we have to Mars on Earth.” The Namib Desert was also the filming location for Mad Max: Fury Road.

The rain is finally here
Good rainfall in the past few days has brought relief and hope to drought-hit subsistence farmers in the North.
Traditional authorities are urging their people to start ploughing their fields to make up for lost time.
Senior headman Peter Kauluma, the head of the Ongula-yanetanga district of Ondonga, says parts of his district have received good rains since Saturday.
“We received good rain for the past three days and most water plains are already full of water.”

Education ministry wants to get foundation right
The government will be furnished with the first comprehensive presentation on the state of teaching in the lower grades by the end of January.
According to the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture permanent secretary, Sanet Steenkamp, the presentation will give the ministry insight into the junior primary pass rate.
This presentation will be compiled from a number of reports submitted by regional school principals to the head office by today.

Water situation remains critical
The City of Windhoek says the light rains experienced over the past few days made no difference to the city’s water crisis and the water restrictions remain in place.
City spokesperson Joshua Amukugo says despite a 25% drop in water usage over the past few weeks, people should continue to use water sparingly and comply with the restrictions announced last month.
“Our request and instructions remain the same. The current water level is below the expected water level, particularly when compared to that of the past years this time of the year.”

Conmen walk away with N$350 000
A female resident of Ongwediva in the Oshana Region fell victim to conmen who walked away with more than N$350 000.
The apparently fairly wealthy woman, whose name was not revealed to this newspaper, was persuaded to give money “to be multiplied”.
It all started on December 17 with a N$20 note, but by the time the woman discovered that she was being tricked, she had already lost N$350 000. A case of fraud was opened at the Ongwediva police station on December 23.

Man killed in farm attack
The Otjiwarongo community was rocked by another farm murder after an elderly couple and their grandson were severely assaulted and their son was shot several times.
Hartwig Koehler (50) died in hospital after the attack on Tuesday night at the farm Doringkom located about 86 km from Otjiwarongo on the road to Okahandja.
According to Detective Chief Inspector Deon Mares the assault and murder occurred on Tuesday night at approximately 20:30 when two black men entered the farmhouse shortly after the family had dinner.

Namibia tops travel destination list again
The Namibian tourism industry got another boost after the country was selected as one of this year’s hottest travel destinations by an American luxury-lifestyle magazine.
Robb Report ranked Namibia sixth on its list of the world’s 21 most popular luxury destinations for this year.
Namibia was ranked among other top destinations such as the Cape winelands, Sri Lanka, Bali, the Dolomites in the Italian Alps, and Bermuda.

Squatters at chief’s house won’t budge
The OvaHerero Traditional Authority (OTA) says it will evict the close to 50 people illegally living at the paramount chief’s official residence in Katutura.
The traditional authority asked those living there, many of whom are unemployed young people, to vacate the premises by December last year in order to renovate the property.
The house, which the OvaHerero community regards as a tribal monument, is situated next to the OvaHerero commando in Katutura.
