Cop charged with murder of student nurse

Almost 10 months after the fatal shooting of student nurse Martha Ilonga, a police officer has been charged with her murder.
Ilonga, 21, was shot on February 12, in an incident of which the police and witnesses gave varying versions.
Police spokesperson Edwin Kanguatjivi confirmed to Namibian Sun that the police officer would appear in the in Katutura Magistrate’s Court on November 23.

Warriors fall to 10-man Guinea

Namibia conceded a first-half goal by Naby Keita as they went down 1-0 to Guinea in their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier match played yesterday at the Sam Nujoma Stadium.
The hosts enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and had the better early chances as Peter Shalulile’s hard running proved troublesome to the Guinean defence.
The Highland Parks striker was in the thick of things as he had turned brilliantly to shoot at goal.
His shot, though, was parried by Naby Moussa Yattara, who was keeping goal for the West Africans.

SACU revenue sharing needs revision: Geingob

President Hage Geingob yesterday emphasised the need for SACU member states to prioritise the review of its current revenue-sharing model, and work to transform their fragmented markets through economic integration.
Geingob was speaking at the official inauguration of the SACU Secretariat headquarters in Windhoek, on land donated by the Namibian government.

No bail in Otjiwarongo murder case

The man arrested on Monday in connection with the death of 26-year-old Elizabeth Ganses, whose partly burnt body was found at Otjiwarongo on October 31, appeared in the Otjiwarongo Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Ivan Hoeseb, 30, appeared before Magistrate Joseph Menos Shikongo. He opted to conduct his own defence.
Hoeseb faces charges of murder, robbery, rape, violation of a dead body and an attempt to defeat or obstruct the course of justice by burning the body.
Hoeseb at first pleaded guilty to all the charges but he later admitted only to killing her.

Chaos over struggle kids 'special' status

Chaos erupted at the weekend when Namibia Exile Kids Association (Neka) executive committee members tried to explain to the more than 200 struggle kids living near the Swapo headquarters Katutura that they are not special.
The group finally turned violent after several attempts to calm them down, and started throwing bottles and other items at the committee.
They eventually blocked the entrance to the Government Office Park Auditorium, where they trapped the Neka leaders.

Opposition hold joint rally

The National Democratic Party (NDP), Nudo, the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP), the Republican Party (RP) and the Congress of Democrats (CoD) at the weekend held their first joint political rally in the Katutura Central Constituency.
However, only RP, RDP and Nudo had speakers at the event, with Nudo’s Joseph Kauandenge the main speaker.
Just a few days after the signing of a cooperation agreement the NDP told Namibian Sun that the other parties are selfish and won’t share resources, and that the marriage won’t last.

Rapist tells young mom to remove baby

A rapist who brutally attacked a 29-year-old mother while she walked home from a cuca shop, demanded that she remove her baby from her back before he sexually assaulted her.
The attack happened at Ombeetele village at 22:00 on Friday.
According to police spokesperson Kauna Shikwambi the women sustained serious injuries to her cheeks and was treated at the Okahao District Hospital.
In a separate incident, a 51-year-old man was arrested for raping a 10-year-old girl.

Döbra gala dinner nets N$1.8m in pledges

A whopping N$1.8 million has been collected in pledges during a fancy gala dinner aimed at collecting funds for the overhaul of the St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic High School, popularly known as Döbra.
The dinner, organised by a steering committee of former pupils, took place at a local hotel last Thursday.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Education, Arts and Culture, Katrina Hanse-Himarwa, said academic landmarks like Döbra had produced the crème da la crème of the country’s current leadership, but was now underperforming.

Finance Minister Calle Schlettwein has commended Namibians for their lively debate about the proposed Solidarity Wealth Tax, while strongly hinting the tax will be implemented, despite growing opposition.
Schlettwein addressed the media this past Friday about the public reaction to the proposed tax, which has included lively debates on social media and a petition sent to his office signed by 2 500 individuals, who oppose the move.
“Although this represents a relatively small 0.59% of individual taxpayers, the petition raises several valid concerns,” Schlettwein said.

Doctorates empower women - Pohamba

Former President and University of Namibia Chancellor Hifikepunye Pohamba says the awarding of honorary doctorate degrees to two leading female figures is a bonus to women empowerment.
Pohamba said this at the conferring of honorary doctoral degrees to Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila and businesswoman Martha Namundjebo-Tilahun.
Kuugongelwa-Amadhila was awarded an honorary doctorate in public finance, while Namundjebo-Tilahun was awarded one in business administration at a special graduation ceremony.

Funds crippled Netball Namibia's activities

Having postpone or cancel their year plans due to either a lack of transport or funds have cost Netball Namibia, not to have a success story in 2015.
Netball Namibia public relations officer Rebekka /Goagoses-Nekundi told Sport Wrap that it has been a challenging year at Netball Namibia.
She said it has been a hard-hitting year for them as most of their plans could not materialise.
“We have no success story to tell for now, as we had envisaged to host the African Championships which would probably had been our success story,” she said.

Livestock industry braced for tough times

South Africa has informed the World Trade Organisation (WTO) that it plans to implement its revised requirements for the import of Namibian livestock by May next year.
The strict new requirements had initially been imposed last year, leading to devastating consequences for Namibia’s meat industry, given its overreliance on traditional markets like South Africa.

Ya Nangoloh urges UN to probe ‘Caprivi Strip torturers’

NamRights executive director Phil ya Nangoloh has urged the United Nations to intervene on the side of the 132 former Caprivians that were detained and allegedly tortured by the Namibian government during a state of emergency in 1999.
Ya Nangoloh also wants the UN to seek clarity from the Namibian government about its refusal to prosecute and sentence 40 so-called “Caprivi Strip torturers”.
In a heavily-worded letter to Juan Mendez, the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Ya Nangoloh highlights what he calls a “systematic pattern of torture and impunity”.

Over 1 000 schools destroyed by Boko Haram

Boko Haram Islamists have destroyed an estimated 1 100 schools this year in their stronghold region surrounding Lake Chad, the United Nations envoy to the area, Toby Lanzer, said yesterday.
Lanzer, who became the UN envoy to central Africa’s restive Sahel region in July, said the targeted schools were in Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria, the four countries most affected by the extremist uprising.

Rapist threatens to harvest body parts

A domestic worker and two teenage girls have lived through a nightmare after being sexually assaulted by a man who also threatened to cut off their heads, breasts and vaginas and take it to his “boss”.
They were brutally attacked this past Friday at Okapyakambidhi in the Ogongo Constituency of the Omusati Region.
Their attacker also threatened to cut off the head of a baby.
At around 21:00 on Friday night, the suspect - armed with a big stick, a pocket knife and a panga - kicked open the door of a shack where the three victims were about to lock up and sleep.

Battle on for Windhoek East

With less than two weeks to go before the regional and local government elections, a scathing battle is expected for the coveted Windhoek East Constituency, which has been a Rally for Democracy and Progress stronghold, but is now under heavy siege from Swapo.
Swapo has been buoyed by its outstanding showing in last year’s general elections and by a host of recent defections by RDP stalwarts to it, including former party leader Hidipo Hamutenya. Fraudster bought friends with stolen N$56m

Self-confessed fraudster Esmerelda Majiedt has testified that she “bought friends” with the N$56.5 million she stole from cement company AfriSam Namibia.
A tearful Majiedt told High Court Judge Christie Liebenberg yesterday that there was nothing left of the money and she is not in a position to pay back even one cent.
She said she extended a helping hand to those who were in need, but all those people had since disappeared.
