Residents of Omungwelume in the Ongenga Constituency of the Ohangwena Region claim to have evidence that government officials are deliberately robbing people who are relocated to make way for the development of the settlement.
They claimed during an impromptu gathering on Tuesday that the measurement of their land was riddled with mistakes that led to some residents being underpaid.
The case of businessman Kleopas Kapweya was singled out as the clearest example of “daylight robbery”.

Abortion debate back in spotlight
Deputy Minister of Gender Equality and Child Welfare Lucia Witbooi has called for an intensive investigation into the selling of abortion drugs, saying prominent people might be involved.
This follows a string of reports of abortion drugs being sold since 2014. Last week, four women and a pharmacist were arrested for supplying pills that induce abortion.
“We as the ministry condemn abortion because it is illegal. A foetus is the beginning of a life,” said Witbooi.

Chief Ankama fires ‘very whitish’ man, wife
The Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Chief Samuel Ankama, has dismissed one of his employees for allegedly being arrogant and “too whitish”.
Rudi John Derek van Ginkel and his wife, Hannelie, found themselves literally out in the cold when Ankama fired them on Sunday and ordered them to leave his lodge, Namibia Lodge 200 and Safaris, on the same day.
According to Van Ginkel, he and his wife applied to work at Ankama’s lodge in July after they saw a newspaper advertisement.
Van Ginkel was appointed as lodge manager and his wife as head of catering.

Water crisis: Government knew
A feasibility study has found that there are only two long-term options for supplying extra water to central Namibia, which faces severe water shortage in the near future. However, it will take about ten years to fully implement these long-term plans and in the meantime, medium-term solutions will cost more than a billion dollars.
The only two long-term options are desalinated seawater from the coast or abstraction from the Okavango River.

State wraps up case against Barman
The State says it has established beyond reasonable doubt that Jeffrey Barman should be found guilty of the murder of Melani Booysen in November 2012.
Barman’s explanations as to how Booysen sustained the fatal injuries were implausible, State Prosecutor Zimba Nduna told the Windhoek High Court yesterday.
Barman pleaded not guilty to the murder of Booysen. Her throat was cut with a broken glass during her daughter’s birthday party on November 10, 2012 in Golgota, Katutura.
Barman further pleaded not guilty to two attempted murder charges and a charge of assault.

The school board’s decision came after learners vandalised school property in the early hours of July 10. They also criticised teachers and the principal on posters that they displayed at their ‘40 days’ function. This event is held 40 days before the final exams.

Hungry for service
President Hage Geingob says infighting between permanent secretaries and their ministers will not be tolerated because the stakes are high and the electorate is impatient for service delivery.
Geingob also lashed out at ministries that return millions of unspent dollars budgeted for capital projects to the Treasury every year.
“The return of money for capital projects comes at an expense and it undermines the government’s efforts to develop the country,” he said.

President to visit farms
Namibian farmers will have to pull up their socks to ensure decent housing and ablution facilities for their workers.
President Hage Geingob said he plans to go around from farm to farm to inspect the living conditions of farmworkers and to see how the country’s farmers are doing.
“I am a little behind with my own farm.
“I still need to finish the pit latrine and showers. We must have this; we must make sure there is proper shelter for the workers.
“Namibia is very weak on sanitation,” said Geingob.
