Court denies application for acquittal

High Court Judge Alfred Siboleka denied an application for discharge submitted by Pinias Kashawa, who is facing 21 charges which include several counts of rape.
Judge Siboleka said it was clear that the prosecution witnesses had established a prima facie case against Kashawa.
“He is now by law obliged to stand on his feet and provide answers,” the judge said.

Tanzanian and Namibians arrested for rhino poaching

A Tanzanian national living in Swakopmund was among several Namibian suspects that appeared in court yesterday after being arrested for illegally hunting four rhinos and illegally dealing in rhino horns.
The police last week arrested the kingpin, the middleman, the buyer and several other suspects when they cracked a syndicate responsible for targeting a safari farm in the Otjozondjupa Region for several months.

Botes made it happen for Gome: Bock

Rebels Football Club (FC) coach Martin Bock says plans to get Wangu Gome sign with Wits would have been in vain if it wasn’t for countryman Henrico Botes.
Bock told Namibian Sun yesterday that their plans almost got turned down when they went to meet the team’s coach and he told them that he needed a striker and not a midfielder.

Petrol prices down, fuel levy up

Motorists can expect slight relief from midnight tomorrow, when petrol and diesel pump prices are set to drop.
Minister of Mines and Energy Obeth Kandjoze made the announcement yesterday, crediting falling international crude prices, while warning of continued exchange-rate pressure.
As of 00:01 on Wednesday, the Walvis Bay fuel pump price of 95-octane unleaded petrol will decrease by 30 cents per litre to N$10.69 per litre.

Swapo mulls court challenge

Namibian Sun has reliably learned that the Swapo Politburo held a lengthy meeting yesterday afternoon after being served with founding affidavits by the so-called Swapo Four.
Elijah Ngurare, Job Amupanda, George Kambala and Dimbulukeni Nauyoma, who were expelled from Swapo last month, are challenging the move in the High Court.
According to unnamed sources, the option of an out-of-court settlement was considered at the meeting.

Aussenkehr reed hut fire claims yet another life

A 42-year-old farmworker burned to death in her hut on the banks of the Orange River at the Aussenkehr grape farm on Saturday.
According to police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Edwin Kanguatjivi, the woman has been identified as Faustina Kutjira Ghumwanghadhi.
Despite generating millions of dollars for their employers, farmworkers at Aussenkehr and Noordoewer are still living in reed huts.
"The incident took place Saturday evening at the Location Five Mandudu," said Kanguatjivi.

Peeing Swapo councillor apologises

More details have emerged about an incident at Okatope village in the Oshikoto Region two months ago when the councillor of the Onyaanya Constituency, Peter Kambala, was alleged to have peed in front of a shebeen following a heavy drinking bout that ended in the slight injury of one of his closest friends.
Although Kambala dismissed the allegations, the owner of the shebeen, Asser Nangolo, has now confirmed that Kambala did indeed pee in front of his business. He said Kambala apologised for what happened and he forgave him “as a comrade”.

FlyAfrica will fly

The battle between Air Namibia and FlyAfrica Namibia yesterday continued with the national airline making a last-ditch attempt to stop the budget airline from making its first flights today by lodging an urgent High Court application.
FlyAfrica Namibia is a joint venture between Namibian-based Nomad Aviation and FlyAfrica Ltd; a Mauritius-based private equity aviation investment group. It is expected to make its first flight from Johannesburg to Windhoek today.

Politburo stands by expulsions of SPYL youth

The Swapo Politburo has expressed confidence in its legal team to battle the legal challenge against the party’s decision to expel four of its youth league leaders.
The Conradie and Damaseb legal firm is representing the Swapo in the matter.
Addressing a press briefing yesterday Swapo Secretary-General Nangolo Mbumba urged party leaders and members to give the legal team their full cooperation.
“The (Politburo) expressed confidence in the ability and qualification of the team that is handling the case in its defence,” he said.

Witnesses testify about abusive relationship in murder trial

A senior correctional officer has told the Windhoek High Court that convicted murderer Gerhard Komeya had abused his girlfriend before killing her.
Deputy Commissioner of Correctional Services Sam Ndeshipanda Franz testified in aggravation of sentence yesterday that the deceased, Kertu Maria Tunondjambi Sheehama, had phoned and told him about the life she had at home.
“She was not free. Could not even visit friends,” Franz said.

Govt apologises for Oshivelo checkpoint chaos

The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry has apologised for the chaos that erupted at the Oshivelo Veterinary Checkpoint when hundreds of motorists were delayed for hours.
According to the ministry’s Acting Permanent Secretary, Abraham Nehemia, the delay was caused by the large number of travellers returning from the North after the school holidays, the Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair and the Olufuko Festival.
“It was hell,” said Nehemia, describing the hectic situation at the checkpoint on Sunday.

Still no CEO for Windhoek

The City of Windhoek still has not found a suitable candidate to appoint as Chief Executive Officer.
The position has been vacant for almost a year and the City has advertised the position several times with no successful candidate emerging.
The position has been vacant since the ten-year term of Niilo Taapopi ended on June 6 last year.
Following the re-advertisement of the position in July this year, 23 applications were received and five candidates were shortlisted for interviews.

Alleged husband strangler pleads guilty

A 53-year-old woman from Katjinakatji village, who is accused of strangling her husband to death on Saturday, has been denied bail.
Kasiku Elizabeth Washe appeared in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday morning before Magistrate Desmond Beukes.
She was arrested on Monday and is charged with murder read with the provisions of the Domestic Violence Act.
“She opted to conduct her own defence, meaning she did not ask for a lawyer or a Legal Aid lawyer,” State Prosecutor Albert Titus told Nampa.
