Tweya to appoint new NBC board soon

Information Communication and Technology (ICT) Minister, Tjekero Tweya, is yet to appoint a new board of directors for the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), after the term of the current term chaired by business mogul Sven Thieme expired earlier this month.
The minister has indicated that a new board will be appointed soon.
This was confirmed by both Tweya and Thieme last week.
Thieme and his team were asked to stay on at the national broadcaster until Tweya appoints a new board.

Warriors narrowly edge Zambia

Namibia yesterday came from a goal down to beat Zambia 2-1 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium during a Championship of African Nations (CHAN) qualifier match.
The home team had suffered an early setback as the Chipolopolo scored in the 14th minute when the Brave Warriors defence failed to clear their lines during a free kick.
That headed goal saw Zambia taking a 1-0 lead into halftime.
But the Brave Warriors came back strongly in the second half with Willy Stephanus finding the equaliser through a beautifully curled effort.

Five new faces as All Blacks prepare to defend World Cup

The All Blacks selectors gave their first hint of World Cup thinking yesterday, naming five new faces in an enlarged 41-man squad.
A final group of 31 to defend their world crown will be named at the end of August following the Rugby Championship Tests against South Africa, Australia and Argentina as well as a one-off Test with Samoa and an extra clash with Australia.

Schalk eases Stormers' gloom

Schalk Burger, his fiery presence so sorely missed in their lame Super Rugby exit at the hands of the Brumbies at Newlands on Saturday, has some cheering news for Stormers supporters.
A withdrawal from the quarter-final against the Aussie outfit (lost 39-19) because of an ill-timed groin strain two days ahead of the key clash, the 32-year-old loose forward will be back next year ... and for a fuller campaign, fitness permitting, than his 2015 one.

The Welwitschias ended their European tour without a win after going down to Spain 20-3 yesterday at the Arcul de Triumf Stadium in an International Rugby Board (IRB) Nations Cup tie.
Spain put up a commanding performance against the lowly-ranked Namibian side to finish third.

Meyer not panicking over Super Rugby flops

South Africa endured one of their most challenging Super Rugby seasons to date in the same year they are hoping to lift the Rugby World Cup, but national team coach Heyneke Meyer is not pushing the panic buttons yet.
None of the country's five teams managed to make the semi-finals, the first time South Africa will not be represented at that stage of the competition since 2003 when they bombed out of the World Cup in Australia with barely a whimper.

Cricket side seeks T20 World Cup qualification

Namibia’s cricket national team is currently in the final preparation phase ahead of their quest to qualify for the ICC’s T20 World Cup in India next year.
The 15-men squad, led by skipper Nicolaas Scholtz, will leave to the United Kingdom (UK) on June 25 where they will engage in some practice matches before two more preparation encounters against Scotland and Canada in Scotland on July 6 and 7.
The actual qualifying tournament is set to kick-off on June 9 in Scotland and Ireland.

Dust and gloom in Ovitoto

Ovitoto villagers say they fear dying in car accidents, due to the terrible roads.
They also fear the death of their livestock because of overgrazing.
They also lament the limited opportunities for youth in that village.
Situated about 45km east of Okahandja in the Omatako Constituency of the Otjozondjupa Region, Ovitoto was established in 1942.
The only school in the area is 60 years old.

Karasburg man fights for his life after senseless shooting

A 20-year-old Karasburg man who was shot this past Saturday evening is fighting for his life in the Katutura State Hospital.
Avril Basson was with friends in front of Club Loving Inn in Karasburg when a bullet, allegedly fired by 37-year-old Nelson Kanime, struck him from behind.
//Karas Police Crime Co-coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Rudolf Isaak, confirmed the incident.
Isaak said the suspect had allegedly fired into a group of friends.
“One of the group members was struck by a bullet from behind and three spent cartridges were found at the scene,” he said.

Kuungongelwa-Amadhila said this while delivering the keynote address on behalf of President Hage Geingob yesterday during the opening ceremony of the Anti-Corruption Commission Conference currently underway in Windhoek.

Government smooths process for Dukwe returnees

To speed up the process of repatriating Namibian refugees currently living at the Dukwe Refugee Camp in Botswana, the Namibian government has directed all security agencies involved in repatriations to shorten the period from months to two weeks.
Cabinet has also approved that the immigration procedures for returning the Namibian refugees will be done at Katima Mulilo in the Zambezi Region.

Govt looking at increased local supply of rough diamonds

Government has negotiated new terms to increase the local supply of rough diamonds to the cutting and polishing industry to between 25 and 30%.
Currently, 10% of Namibian diamonds are sold to local diamond companies while the rest are exported to Botswana where De Beers moved its headquarters to.
Government owns 50% shares in Namdeb Holdings (Namdeb), a joint venture with De Beers.

Harmony now at peace with his parents after pastor chaos

The 21-year-man, who was taken off a plane two months ago by the police as he was about to fly to Ghana to start his pastoral studies, has given up his plan to become a man of the cloth and is now working at an architecture firm.
Harmony Ahalwa made headlines when he was removed from an Accra-bound plane by police officers in early April.
His mother had sought the intervention of the police by saying that Harmony was leaving without her consent and had abandoned his studies at the Polytechnic of Namibia.

Brave Warriors spark national solidarity

Namibia’s national football team recent exploits have sparked solidarity that has seen fans go to great lengths to show their support for the team.
This was in evidence when the Brave Warriors, who recently won the Cosafa Cup, played Zambia at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in a Championship of African Nations (CHAN) qualifier.
Not only were fans excitedly waving flags but they were also dressed in national colours.
It can thus be argued that this feel good factor may yet see the team make an impression in their efforts to qualify for the 2017 African Nations Cup (AFCON).

Mass Housing: Govt sued for N$101m

Following the recent abrupt halting of the Mass Housing initiative, a contractor has instituted a N$101 million in the High Court against the government and the National Housing Enterprise (NHE).
The Ministry of Urban and Rural Development, on behalf of government, and the NHE have also been requested to pay 20% interest per year since 2014, as well as the cost of suit and further financial relief.

600 a year die on Namibia’s roads

The Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund says on average one person is killed on Namibian roads and about 16 suffer serious injuries every day.
A media statement issued by the MVA says the injuries suffered include limb loss, spinal cord, head and internal injuries.
According to the MVA, road crashes are a cause for concern in Namibia and each year over 600 people perish on the country’s roads, while more than 5 000 people are injured.

Toddler allegedly raped by tenant

A four-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a tenant residing at her parents’ house at Otavi last Friday and is among three youth sexually assaulted during this past week, according to the latest police crime report.
A total of 41 criminal cases were reported, ranging from suicide, murder, assault, housebreaking and stock theft.
According to police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Edwin Kanguatjivi, the suspect who raped the four-year-old has been arrested and police investigations are continuing.

Ndume humbled by Mandela UN award

Namibian doctors must learn to give back to give to the poor, says Helena Ndume, who has scooped the first United Nations Nelson Mandela Rolihlahla Mandela Prize for her work in ophthalmology.
A respected Namibian eye specialist, Ndume has been named along with Jorge Sampaio of Portugal as the first-ever laureates of the global award.
“This is for all of us... it is not my prize alone, it is for all Namibians. There are so many foot soldiers that made it possible,” said an overwhelmed Ndume.

Suspected wife killer appears in court

Onalulago village resident Johannes Shipanga, who handed himself over to the police last Wednesday and was promptly arrested for allegedly killing his 55-year-old wife Justina Shigwedha, has appeared in the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice.
