TransNamib denies retrenchment

TransNamib yesterday said that employees are not being retrenched, but that the company is embarking on a voluntary early retirement process.
This follows media reports this week that TransNamib has decided to continue with its planned retrenchment of about 1 000 workers.
Earlier this year it was announced that part of the company’s turnaround plan includes a right-sizing exercise which will include the retrenchment off 963 employees working in non-core departments.

Zuma’s drought millions finally on their way

The N$100 million promised to Namibians by South African President Jacob Zuma for drought relief will finally be reality, after the two countries recently signed an agreement.
During a two-day visit to Namibia in November 2013, Zuma announced the donation and it has since emerged that the donation will be in kind, not cash.
Since early December 2013, the South African and Namibian governments have been in discussions to facilitate the assistance package.

Diescho, governor clash over corruption claims

Governors being appointed by a Head of State opens the door to corruption, says the country’s foremost political commentator Professor Joseph Diescho.
However, one of the country’s longest-serving governors Khomas Regional Governor, Laura McLeod-Katjirua, described Diescho’s corruption claims as “absurd”.
Delivering his presentation on Tuesday at the three-day Anti-Corruption Conference, Diescho said governors should be elected into power.

Outdated civil aviation law creates terrorism threat

The civil aviation industry in Namibia is more than 50 years old and puts the country at risk in terms of security and terrorism threats.
The concern was voiced yesterday when the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Economics and Public Administration discussed the new Civil Aviation Bill with various stakeholders.
According to the Director of Civil Aviation (DCA), Angelina Simana, the current legislation, which is outdated, was enacted by the then South African administration more than 50 years ago.

City tests Saturday mall bus rides

The City of Windhoek has launched scheduled bus services between the Okuryangava Woman Centre and Wernhil Park every Saturday on the hour.
Although still a pilot project, the scheduled services are part of the City’s Sustainable Urban Transport Master Plan, expected to address Windhoek’s transport needs.
City Public Transport Manager, Clarence Rupingena, stressed the need for urban transportation to be viewed as a right that is owed to residents.

Police baffled as man is shot dead and half-naked woman disappears

A man was found shot dead in his bakkie yesterday morning in the Kupferberg area, while the woman who was in his company has mysteriously disappeared, after leaving the scene with a passerby.
Police spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner Edwin Kanguatjivi, confirmed yesterday that a Namibian man was found dead with a gunshot in the right eye near Kupferberg, while the mystery woman is still to be identified.
He said the man has been identified by his mother as Marius Christo Mostert, 44.

84 cops charged with crimes

Eighty-four police officers have been charged for criminal activities between 2012 and last year.
This is according to Police Inspector-General, Sebastian Ndeitunga, who was speaking yesterday at the conclusion of the Anti-Corruption Commission Conference in Windhoek.
Ndeitunga emphasised that law-enforcers are not immune to acts of corruption, adding that 15 corrupt police officers are currently suspended, while one has been relieved of his duties for being dishonest.

Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) Northern Branch Chairperson, Tomas Iindji, has warned against speculators attempting to manipulate the system by acting as foreign currency exchange agencies.
Speaking a few days after the currency conversion agreement between Namibia and Angola was implemented, Iindji urged everyone to strictly adhere to the rules of the agreement.

Leopard spotted near State House

A leopard that was reportedly seen near State House has apparently disappeared without a trace.
The leopard was seen on Tuesday night near the official presidential resident, but authorities were yesterday afternoon unable to confirm what happened to it after the sighting.
The first person that spotted the leopard was Helena Karamata.
She told Namibian Sun she was shocked and excited when she saw the leopard for the first time.
According to Karamata she was driving home at approximately 19:00 on Tuesday.

Raped by her daddy

A 14-year-old girl is now living in at a shelter surrounded by strangers, after her family shunned her for reporting her father for allegedly raping and threatening to kill her barely a month ago.
The girl has also been forced to drop out of school, because she has nowhere to live.
She has been insulted by relatives and community members in her village in the North of the country.
She said she came home one night and her father called her to come to him.

The puzzle pieces of a baffling murder mystery that ended with the shooting of a Windhoek man in the Kupferberg area and a passerby rescuing a half-naked woman, who has since turned up after disappearing, are slowly coming together.
Marius Christo Mostert, 44, was found shot dead in his bakkie on Wednesday morning in the Kupferberg area, while the woman who was in his company mysteriously disappeared, after leaving the scene with a passerby.
It has also been established that the two had been drinking at least at two Windhoek nightspots.

Victim’s family heartbroken as alleged passion killer gets bail

The family and friends of the late Louise Roxey Alupe, 24, were left heartbroken after her alleged killer Jomo Petrus, 31, was granted N$4 000 bail by the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s Court this week.
The accused allegedly blindfolded and shot Alupe in the head on November 10 last year as they sat in a vehicle at Independence Beach in Walvis Bay.
He then turned the gun on himself, but the weapon jammed.
Petrus then used broken glass to cut his wrists, but he survived.

BIG Coalition challenges Kameeta to announce N$200 grant

The Basic Income Grant (BIG) Coalition has appealed to government to urgently introduce a N$200 monthly grant to wipe out poverty.
Newly appointed coalition chairperson Wilfred Diergaardt said it will cost government only 5 to 6% of the national budget to introduce the grant.
He also challenged Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare Minister, Zephania Kameeta, who has been at the forefront of the campaign to push for the implementation of a BIG.

Haufiku warns against HIV/Aids faith healers

Health and Social Services Minister, Bernard Haufiku, has warned the public against faith healers, who pretend to cure HIV/Aids through prayer, thereby undermining government efforts and putting the lives of their followers in real danger.
He also expressed his concern about an increase in HIV infections, especially among the youth, which was reported in the northern regions last year.
Haufiku described the trend as worrisome, as it represents an erosion and reversal of the achievement made in the struggle to eliminate HIV.

State disputes that American murder accused is unfit for trial

The State is questioning the correctness of the psychiatric report that declared the American suspect in the murder of the 25-year-old André Heckmair in Windhoek on 7 January 2011 unfit to stand trial.
State advocate Antonia Verhoef feels there appears to be a need for more examination.
Judge Christie Liebenberg observed that the law provides that if the finding is not unanimous or is disputed, the accused Marcus Kevin Thomas or the person who examined the patient may be called to provide evidence.

Namibia, Germany sign N$607m loan deal

Namibia and Germany have signed an inter-governmental agreement to kick-start renewable energy projects worth more than €45 million (N$607 million).
Finance Minister, Calle Schlettwein, and the Federal Republic of Germany ambassador to Namibia, Onno Huckmann, yesterday signed the agreement that further strengthens ties between the two countries.
The agreement allows NamPower access a loan of N$607million from the Kreditanstalt fur Wiederaufbau (KfW), in accordance with the terms and conditions laid down.

Teachers battle without indigenous language textbooks

Teachers Union of Namibia (TUN) says schools using local languages as a medium of instruction do not have textbooks to date.
The use of local languages as a medium of instruction for pre-primary to grade three follows the introduction of the revised curriculum for primary and secondary education in the country. TUN President Mahongora Kavihuha said the textbooks were supposed to have arrived at schools at the beginning of the year.
Kavihuha explained that the delay was caused by the recall of the textbooks, due to mistranslations and other challenges.

Namibia’s shocking human rights violations

Shocking figures on rape, passion killings, abuse and child prostitution in Namibia have emerged in the latest United States Human Rights Country Report on Namibia.
The 2014 report says the country is in breach of three major human rights violations - the slow pace of court proceedings, violence and discrimination against women and children, as well as discrimination and violence based on sexual orientation and gender.
The delayed court proceedings, according to the report, resulted in the lengthy pre-trial detention of prisoners under poor conditions.

NYC committee appointed to ‘unify’ Nanso

A committee, consisting of National Youth Council (NYC) representatives from regional youth forums and national affiliates, has been set up to assist in unifying the Namibia National Student Organisation (Nanso).
Chairperson of the NYC Representative Council Neville Andre said the committee will investigate the causes of Nanso’s divisions and recommend ways and means to alleviate the impasses.
This follows Nanso suspension from the NYC after two individuals, who both claim they represent Nanso, showed up for a meeting at the weekend in Nkurenkuru.
