A Cabinet resolution has placed Attorney-General Sacky Shanghala at the centre of solving the impasse surrounding the ambitious housing initiative amid reports indicating that a government-sanctioned investigation into the rates charged by contractors were market-related in
general.
According to a recent Cabinet resolution, which also approved the that the mandate given to the National Housing Enterprise (NHE) be revoked, a committee chaired by Shanghala will be responsible for negotiating and settling contracts entered into by the NHE and Mass Housing contractors.

House prices continue their relentless rise

Government’s recent watershed deal with land activists came just in time to forestall an inevitable crisis and appease potential investors in the local housing market, but should not be expected to bring down the prevailing exorbitant house prices, just yet.
This is according to the latest assessment by FNB Namibia, which in its latest housing index for the month of April, recorded a 6.8% month-on-month increase in median house prices.

De Jager killers had intent - State

State Prosecutor Ethel Ndlovu in her arguments for sentencing to Judge Naomi Shivute of the three men convicted of the murder of the owner of HAMS Security, Andries Petrus de Jager in 2009, said the murder was premeditated and according to investigations, there was extensive planning prior to the murder.
Ndlovu further argued that the offences committed by Willem Kawulefelwa Valombola, Toivo Kashipolo and Fillipus Shishiveni Nomongula, were out of greed and avarice, and it is these factors that make the blameworthiness of the three accused very serious.

Ngurare, AR trio have case - lawyer

A local lawyer says the so-called expelled ‘Swapo Four’ have probable cause to drag the ruling party before the court for their political demise.
This follows remarks by land activist Job Amupanda indicating that there could be a legal challenge to the “recent suspensions, expulsions and utterances”.
Swapo Secretary-General Nangolo Mbumba refused to comment on the matter saying he “is a realist” who will only comment when it happens.

Governor unhindered by N$8bn project conservation concerns

Erongo Regional Governor Cleophas Mutjavikua says the proposed N$8 billion Desert Rose Namibia International Convention and Exhibition Centre (NICC) project, to be constructed between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, will go ahead despite opposition from certain quarters.
The project, which is developed by Sand Rose Investments whose shareholders include prominent businessmen Desmond Amunyela, Lazarus Jacobs, Nardo Sardinha and Paulo Coimbra, is in the vicinity of Vierkant Klip.

Top govt official, cops nabbed for poaching

A senior government official and two police officers are among the latest suspects arrested for poaching activities.
Environment and Tourism Minister Pohamba Shifeta revealed this week that a deputy director at the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources in Erongo Region as well as two police officers were arrested recently.
One police officer was arrested in Windhoek, while another was arrested in the North and appeared this week in the Okahao Magistrate’s Court.

Oshakati needs N$46 million for housing

Oshakati mayor Onesmus Shilunga says his council needs N$46.5 million to compensate owners of communal land availed for the development of houses at the town.
Shilunga said this during a meeting hosted by his council and attended by the Finance Minister, Calle Schlettwein at Oshakati on Wednesday.
Schlettwein was in Oshakati to establish how much land is ready for planning, servicing and allocation at the town.

The Inspector-General of the Namibian Police, Sebastian Ndeitunga, says stricter gun-control measures will be implemented in Namibia.
“We will make amendments to the Arms and Ammunition Act which will address who will carry firearms. Firearms are not given to take the law into your own hands. It has become a concern for many of us and we have to do something,” said Ndeitunga.
The amendment bill should be tabled in Parliament this year, he indicated.
Ndeitunga said it is too easy for people to obtain a firearm in Namibia.

Man ‘traumatised’ after being mistaken for killer

Following the weekend’s shooting of a Finnish man in a road-rage incident, a 39-year-old man claims he was wrongfully handcuffed in his home on Sunday evening. Brian Petersen, who lives with his father, says he was sitting peacefully at home when he heard suspicious noises outside.
“I looked through the window and saw guys patrolling around the house with AK47s. As my fiancée approached me to see what was going on, they were already in the house.”
Petersen says he believed the men were from the police’s Special Field Force judging by their uniforms.

Famine stalks the country

A quarter of the Namibian population may go hungry until March 2016.
This is one of the findings of a drought impact study commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry and the Office of the Prime Minister.
No community has been spared by the drought that has ripped through the country over the last two years, Deputy Prime Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah said yesterday.
Nandi-Ndaitwah spoke during the handover of a donation of dried fish, maize meal and blankets from Namib-Re, RDS Fisheries and Namib Mills.

Child sex trader gets 13-year prison term

Poverty of children does not give anyone licence to exploit them for financial greed or sexual gratification.
Judge President Petrus Damaseb said this in the Windhoek High Court yesterday when he sentenced Johanna Lukas to 13 years’ imprisonment on several counts of human trafficking and rape.
She sold three girls between ages of 13 and 14 to a South African man, Marthinus Pretorius, who is still on the run. The transactions took place in Swakopmund’s Vineta area on four occasions between April and May 2012. The fugitive allegedly paid N$10 000 for the children.

Water shortage in Oshikoto worsens

After a shortage of water was reported in the Okankolo and Eengodi constituencies in June, the situation has worsened, says Eengodi Constituency councillor Valde Sheyavali.
Sheyavali says the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry’s Rural Water Supply Division in Onankali has stopped supplying the constituency with water.
The Rural Water Supply Division came to the rescue of the two constituencies in June when the water shortage was reported.

DTA suspensions open can of worms

A series of accusations have surfaced in the DTA camp following the suspensions of former secretary-general Vincent Kanyetu and two regional coordinators, Boniface Kashera and Reinhilde Kudumo.
These include allegations that party leader McHenry Venaani is running the party “from his sitting room,” turning the party into a “McHenry Trust”, inciting division among Herero members and party members from other tribes, as well as favouring newcomers.

Son in search of father’s remains

The 30-year-old son of the late Willbard Elago ‘Ndjeke’ Ashikoto, who died in 1982, s in search of his father’s grave.
Risto Ashikoto, who never saw his father, wants to know where his father was buried.
Ashikoto told Namibian Sun recently that he wants to re-bury his father in his home village.
He said he always had hope of seeing his father until a member of the Namibia Defence Force (NDF) searched for him and told him that the father had died years ago.
Ashikoto decided to look for his siblings last year and managed to meet three of them.

Namfisa closes NovaNam Pension Fund probe

The Namibia Financial Institutions Supervisory Authority (Namfisa) has closed its investigation into the NovaNam Pension Fund fraud in which hundreds of workers were scammed out of their pension money.
The investigation confirmed that there were irregularities in the manner in which benefits were paid out by the NovaNam Pension Fund, as some members did not receive what was due to them.

Uukwambi, Ongandjera land dispute leads to arrest

Police in the Omusati Region have arrested two men for allegedly removing fencing from privately owned crop fields at Ondjungolume village in the Uukwambi traditional district last month.
Warrant Officer Lineekela Shikongo on Monday confirmed the arrest of Willem Fillemon, 61, and Amunyela Joel, 65.
He said the two were arrested on July 25 and 26 and have appeared in the Okahao Magistrate’s Court on a charge of theft.
The charge stems from them removing the fence wires and poles, claiming that they were sent by the Ongandjera Traditional Authority to do so.
