After two people were killed in elephant attacks in northern Namibia at the weekend, the Minister of Environment and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta, appealed to people to be vigilant, cautious and refrain from provoking animals.
The two killed by elephants were a 14-year-old girl from Rundu and a 52-year-old Angolan in the Zambezi Region.
According to the police, 14-year-old Nangura Putji was with her three sisters as the elephant was passing their homestead at Mupapama village near Rundu on Friday afternoon.

RDP reveals election agenda
With less than four months remaining before the regional and local authority elections, the leader of the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP), Jeremiah Nambinga, said his party will prioritise land, water, electricity, sanitation and rural development in its campaign.
He added that the party’s Central Committee (CC) will meet next weekend to decide whether to contest the regional elections in all regions and whether to draw up an election manifesto.

Nashilongo hopeful of big title shot
One of Namibia’s leading boxing trainers, Tobias Nashilongo, is hoping that his fighter, Bethuel ‘Tyson’ Uushona, will get a world title shot in the near future.
This after the Namibian claimed the IBO Africa welterweight title by beating the Bongo ‘The Cat’ Lipembo by unanimous points decision over the weekend.
Uushona gave a brilliant performance by making full use of the ring in his attempts to avoid the powerful punches of the Congolese.

Murder-suicide rocks the north
In a gruesome attack, a man stabbed his lover eight times and then hanged himself above her corpse.
The 31-year-old small business owner hanged himself after repeatedly stabbing 25-year-old Outapi hairdresser Johanna Angula with a pocket knife in her rented room at Outapi.
The Omusati police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Lineekela Shikongo, said Angula was killed sometime Sunday night.

Mayor denies plot sabotage
Windhoek Mayor Muesee Kazapua has denied claims that the municipality is unresponsive and uncooperative in making land available for the Massive Urban Land Servicing Project.
This project will lead to the servicing of 200 000 plots following an agreement between President Hage Geingob and the leaders of the Affirmative Repositioning (AR) movement recently.
“This is a directive from the President, part of the local government and we are part of the central government. Why would we be unresponsive and uncooperative?” asked Kazapua.

Minister calls for responsible reporting
The Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Tjekero Tweya, has lambasted some segments of the media whose reporting “creates false impressions”.
Tweya was speaking at the opening of the third Arandis Investment Conference and Uranium Festival at Arandis on Friday.
He said statements in the media referring to Arandis as a ghost town and portraying investors as criminals are misleading.
“The financial institutions present here today will agree that they are doing great business despite the fact that they were misinformed,” said the minister.

Polytech links with Kraatz Marine
The Polytechnic of Namibia recently signed an agreement with engineering company Kraatz Marine.
The agreement makes provision for student and academics of the tertiary education institution to undergo attachments at the Ohlthaver & List (O&L) subsidiary, for purposes of capacity building, research, learning and teaching.

Nghishidimbwa to Lesotho for SADC investigation
The police’s crime investigation coordinator for the Khomas Region, Deputy Commissioner Sylvanus Nghishidimbwa, has been named as the local investigator on the SADC team investigating the assassination of former Lesotho army commander Brigadier Maaparankoe Mahao.
This was confirmed by Inspector-General Sebastian Ndeitunga, who said Nghishidimbwa had already left the country to join investigators from Botswana and Zimbabwe.

Man lures mute child with sweets
The neighbour of a mute five-year-old girl will appear in the Keetmanshoop Magistrate Court today after he allegedly lured her from her home with a promise to buy her sweets and then tried to rape her.
According to police spokesperson Slogan Matheus the incident happened at the town’s Tseiblaagte residential area on Monday at about 14:00.
The 30-year-old man allegedly told the girl that they were going to sell empty bottles at a local shop and that he would then buy her some sweets.

Banning trophy hunting would harm conservation
While international organisations and activists are calling for a total ban of all trophy hunting the Minister of Environment and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta, said that would have a devastating impact on the Namibian economy.
“Banning trophy hunting will be the end of conservation in Namibia,” Shifeta said.
Shifeta yesterday stressed the important role that trophy hunting plays not only for the economy of Namibia, but also for communities and conservancies.

Hage wanted me out - Ngurare
Expelled Secretary of the Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) Elijah Ngurare has provided Namibian Sun with a letter he had written to President Hage Geingob regarding his expulsion, in which he said that he was kicked out because of vengeance and not justice.
This was after a letter was leaked on social media, apparently signed by Ngurare, in which he purportedly accused Geingob of hating those who did not support his party vice-presidential bid in 2012 which culminated in him becoming Head of State.

Alfred Angula and Nafwu tit-for-tat battle continues
The Namibia Farm Workers Union (Nafwu) says the battle between it and former Secretary-General Alfred Angula is far from over because the union still wants the missing money and a vehicle that belongs to it.
Nafwu’s newly elected Secretary-General, Rocco Nguvauva, yesterday said Angula is not off the hook despite the fraud case against him being removed from the roll of the High Court.
Nguvauva said the union had a meeting with the Prosecutor-General last month where they were informed that the fraud case against Angula was still under investigation.

Volleyball sponsored by Bank Windhoek
The Namibia Volleyball Federation (NVF) on Tuesday received an N$80 000 sponsorship from Bank Windhoek.
This sponsorship will go towards the hosting of the federation’s annual Bank Windhoek NVF Cup, which takes place in Rundu, Swakopmund and Windhoek this year.
The federation also received a further N$10 000 from local company, Marshall Rock Number Nineteen, to bring the sponsorship for the tournament to N$90 000.

Locally based footballers called for training
Namibia’s Brave Warriors have called up a squad of 17 locally based players for a training session over the weekend.
The selected players are requested to report for duty at the Namibia Football Association (NFA) House on Friday morning.
The squad has seemingly been called to maintain the fitness of the locally based players with an eye on preparing them for Namibia’s 2017 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tie against Senegal on September 5.

Nafwu congress held against court order
The Namibia Farm Workers Union (Nafwu) congress held last weekend was illegal.
This follows a letter dated July 31 from the Deputy Labour Commissioner Tuulikki Shikongo who directed the secretary-general of Nafwu Moses Kativa that the congress should not take place as it violates a High Court order.
“I would instruct you to postpone this congress up until such a time that all parties are properly involved as per the court order, as you are in violation of the court order and that of the Nafwu 1994 Constitution,” Shikongo said.

RDP condemns farm murders
The Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) has condemned the recent murders of commercial farmers outside Okahandja and Grootfontein.
In a strongly-worded statement issued by RDP’s Deputy Secretary for Information and Publicity, Nghiningiluandubo Kashume yesterday, the party said it is barbaric and primitive for any right-minded person or group of people to carry out such heinous crimes against innocent civilians in a democratic society.

Family's fury at nurse killer sentence
The family of the late Liika Ndeukumwa Shangilifa, who was stabbed to death at her place of business at Onelombo village in 2013, said the justice system has failed them.
Rebeus Lameka, 23, who was responsible for her death appeared yesterday in the Oshakati High Court before Judge Herman January and was sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment of which four years were suspended for five years on condition that he is not convicted of culpable homicide or assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm within that period.
