Keeping accused persons in custody while the State gets its house in order would be a gross infringement on the accused’s right to liberty.
This was said by Windhoek Magistrate Ilge Rheent yesterday when she objected to the State’s request for a postponement of a bail application by 19 suspects arrested in connection with tax fraud involving N$114 million.
A formal bail application is expected to be heard in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court today.
Rheent emphasised that the court needs to protect the constitutional rights of each accused person.
