A designated security guard will be searching patients for chewing-gum at the Katutura State Hospital in order to ensure the hospital is kept clean.
This was decided by Health Minister Bernhard Haufiku after cleaners told him they should not be blamed for the dirty hospital because patients deliberately strew garbage.
“When I was there this morning (Friday) the Katutura Hospital casualty ward was littered with chewing gum. Maybe some cleaners are not doing their work but the public is behaving very badly. They need to learn to behave responsibly,” said Haufiku.
