Namibians usually celebrate Independence Day with strong feelings of love for
their country, along with a jubilant sense of nationalism and patriotic pride.
To celebrate the joyous occasion, Shoprite Namibia came up with an innovative
idea to reward their loyal clientele while generating awareness to buy Namibian
products to support growth at home in the years to come.
The prizes included seven whopping N$31 000 shopping vouchers, which could
easily give an average family some serious independence on their groceries for
the year.
“It is absolutely life-changing to win such a useful prize,” says winner Rosvita
Amuthenu, a recently graduated nurse who has been struggling to find
employment.
“Having not to stress or struggle with groceries for the year to come, takes a
tremendous burden off my family and will allow us to focus on saving and
investing in other areas of our lives, while not compromising on nutrition or
personal care.”
Promoting patriotic products
All shoppers had to do to enter, was purchase some proudly Namibian products,
and WhatsApp a photo of their purchase and receipt.
Over a seven-day period, Shoprite surprised lucky winners with N$31 000 in
shopping vouchers every day.
“At first I thought it was a scam when they called to inform me that I’d won. It just
sounded too good to be true. Thankfully, I saw my name announced as a winner
of Shoprite’s Facebook page and I was immediately overjoyed,” Amethenu added.
“I usually make a point of purchasing locally-made products as the quality and
affordability are always attractive and it just gives that unmistakable taste of home.
“With my winning vouchers, I will continue to support local products and I
encourage more people to prioritize buying ‘Proudly Namibian’, as this will help
stimulate our economy and grow local businesses that can than employ more
Namibians.
“Something so simple as making sure that items in your trolley are local, can have
a beneficial ripple effect throughout our economy. I commend Shoprite for shining
a spotlight on this, especially during our Independence month,” she says.
