The bubbly DJ Houvas was born in Tsumeb but grew up in the streets of Walvis Bay. There he was introduced to the art of DJ'ing at a young age. Like many people who work in the events and entertainment space, DJ Houvas did not see the pandemic coming and had to shift his business model to survive amidst the pandemic.

Predominantly known as a house DJ, Houvas says he does not limit himself to one genre. Instead, he lets the crowd inform his sets, tweaking the music in tune with their energy.

“This flexibility has helped me a lot especially during this time where we have had to get more creative with our art.

“I think it goes without saying, everyone has been hit hard by this pandemic. At this point, I try to organise day time events and also use online platforms to sell my brand, showcase my talent and also entertain. I do this mainly on social media networks,” he said.

Tough lessons

DJ Houvas' biggest lesson learnt from the pandemic is simply to branch out and generate income from other sources besides events.

He admitted that the mistake a lot of creatives made before the pandemic was not venturing into businesses from other industries as well.

“I have mixed feelings about handouts from the government.

“I think it's fair to say the government cannot sustain supporting us all.

As much as the government has a duty to provide and support us, one must also work hard to sustain him or herself.

We just need to be innovative,” he advised.

Sharing what he has in the pipeline, DJ Houvas revealed that he is working on growing his brand by expanding his clothing line.

“I am also working on creating my own music as well so people should be on the lookout for that.

I will share all the details about this in due time via my social media.”
