The Namibia Independent Security Union (NISU) says since the introduction of its funeral benefit scheme in 2013, it has spent over N$38 000 on 19 coffins for members who died.
NISU secretary-general Simon Kandondo says the union saw the need for such a scheme because security guards do not enjoy the same employment benefits as other employees.
An agreement was signed with three funeral undertakers in terms of which NISU pays N$2 000 towards the cost of a coffin. The undertakers are Avbob, Mukwe and Mutelo.
The benefit is only applicable to fully paid-up members.
