WINDHOEK

The Namibia Agricultural Union (NAU) says there has been a drastic increase in prospecting on farms for the possible extraction of minerals by various companies.

According to the NAU, part of the prospecting process involves conducting extensive aerial electromagnetic surveys.

The union said large areas with a high number of farms in title deed areas are affected by this.

“The NAU has received several inquiries from members who feel that companies do not always adhere to the rules set by the relevant authorities.

The union has, therefore, launched an investigation to ascertain what landowners’ rights are and what the duties of companies doing prospecting on farms are.

“The NAU has also contacted the commissioner of environmental affairs, who has first-hand experience with low-flying aircraft over Etosha and the reaction of animals confronted with unfamiliar and noisy air objects.”

Respect landowners

The union said it is imperative that companies that do the prospecting communicate with the relevant landowners.

“They must also respect the concerns of the landowners and take responsibility if their activities cause any damage or inconvenience.”

The union added that it is not their intention to prevent companies from conducting their prospecting.

“Mining is beneficial, and well-regulated and ethical mining operations can have a positive impact. However, the NAU requires that these activities are only done under certain reasonable conditions.”
