A grandfather (67) accused of raping his 13-year-old granddaughter pleaded not guilty in the Walvis Bay magistrates court last Thursday.

Three charges of rape were filed against the accused, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim.

The well-known figure from the Walvis Bay community stands accused of raping the minor girl on several occasions between March and November 2020.

The accused was arrested in December 2020 after the girl confided in a friend, who, in turn, advised her to tell a teacher who approached the police and a case was opened.

Appearing before magistrate John Sindano, the lawyer for the accused stated that his client pleas in accordance with his instructions.

“The defence will not disclose any details at this moment. Everything will become apparent during the course of the trail. The accused reserves the right to call witnesses in conducting his defence. The accused appionts Lorentz Angula Incorporated to represent him in the matter,” court documents stated.

Previously, the accused was represented by Ray Rukoro of ENS Africa Namibia.

State prosecutor Annakleta Kandjimi requested that the case be remanded to 23 June for a decision by the Prosector General, which was granted.

The accused will remain in custody.

Late last month the accused applied for bail, which was denied by the same magistrate.
