After completing her degree in media studies, Lauriza Rossouw made the advertising agency her home away from home by first starting her career at two smaller agencies, moving to local agency Adforce, and then joining Weathermen & Co in 2018.
As media manager, Rossouw has the coordination of all things media related down to a fine art, from shaping deliverables with clients, to pairing communications with the appropriate media channels, and preparing costings with the finance team.
In Rossouw’s words, “I ensure the artwork our creatives produce has a place to live; I make sure the right people see the right message at the right time. The team is also in the process of elevating the Media Department and giving it an extra leg by offering clients a complete 360-degree media solution – something I’m very exciting to be involved in as well.”
In Rossouw’s line of work, no two days are the same as each brings new tasks, considerations and sometimes challenges. She explains, “In advertising, you have to constantly stay on your toes, roll with the punches and learn from them.”
Years of experience in this dynamic field have equipped her to deal with whatever is thrown her way and effectively navigate the stressful situations, tight deadlines and long hours that are sometimes a part of the job. However, according to Rossouw it is all worth it, because winning those battles and finding solutions for their clients gives her the greatest source of satisfaction.
Another aspect that makes her job so exciting is the people she works with at Weathermen & Co. “I am fortunate to work alongside people who I can call my friends. The advertising industry really does involve hard work and long hours, so it helps to work with people whose company you enjoy and who make the work fun. They also form a unique support group, because they are the only ones who understand exactly what you go through in this industry,” she says.
Rossouw’s advice to anyone eager to enter the world of advertising is to go for it and take the plunge into the deep end. “You need to find out whether advertising is for you by experiencing it. This is why it’s important to seize every opportunity you get. Either way, you’ll learn so much from the experience and be all the better for it.”
