The settlement of Groot Aub, 50 kilometres out of Windhoek, will be hosting the Independence Cup this weekend.

Teams from across Namibia will flock to the settlement in an attempt to claim bragging rights.

One of the tournament organisers, Rhonie //Garoëb, said the aim of the tourney is to provide a platform for players who have been inactive during the coronavirus pandemic.

It will also serve as a pre-season preparation tournament for the upcoming Namibia Premier Football League and the lower leagues.

“Since the flagship league of Namibia has been idle for over two years, it is a good opportunity for players to gain match fitness in anticipation of the kick-off of organised football in the country,” //Garoëb said.

//Garoëb believes the tournament will also provide scouts with an opportunity to spot top players for their premier league teams.

“I am calling on all coaches from all three divisions in the country to come and scout for talent.” The tournament is open to all teams and health regulations are in place.

A stall for interested vendors will cost N$300 for three days from 20 to 22 March.

The entry fee per team is N$1 400, with the winners taking home N$10 000.

The runners-up will get N$6 000, while the two semi-finalists will each get N$2 000 for their efforts.

The closing date for entries is 18 March and the draw will be conducted on 19 March at the Pink Shop.

Only teams that paid the registration fee will be in the draw for the tournament.

Interested teams can contact Rhuuksie //Garoëb at 081 208 1681 or Zennon Levi at 081 834 9328.
