OHANGWENA

A 39-year-old woman accused of killing her nephew before burying his body at Okakwa village in the Ohangwena Region in 2018 made her first appearance in the Ohangwena Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Hilde Kalola appeared before magistrate Auguste Simon, who postponed the case to 19 May for further police investigations.

Kalola was arrested last Friday and is facing charges of murder read with the Domestic Violence Act, and defeating the administration of justice.

She is accused of killing 16-year-old Johannes Nghidengwa after allegedly tying him to an iron bed with rope and severely assaulting him with an electrical cord until he sustained multiple injuries and died in December 2018. She then allegedly buried his body at the village, which was dug up by the police on Friday.

‘Not guilty’

Although Kalola was not asked to plead to the charges against her, she pleaded not guilty by saying she had nothing do with Nghidengwa’s death.

She also informed the court that she was going to acquire the services of a private lawyer to defend her in court.

The prosecutor in the case, Elphins Maluboka, indicated that the State opposed the granting of bail on the grounds that the case is serious and it was not in the public interest to release Kalola at this stage.
