Parliament is no contestation of masculinity The Namibian parliament is currently a circus reminiscent of a locker-room where men parade their reproductive organs and brag about who possesses the biggest.
When men are challenging each other to fistfights in parliamentary chambers, issues such as the devastating drought in the Kunene Region are relegated to the canvas.
While animals and humans scavenge for rotten food at rubbish dumps in Opuwo, the people they elected to parliament are threatening to ‘moer’ each other in the august house where solutions to the nation’s challenges are supposed to be birthed.
When Namibians are bored or have their Netflix accounts disconnected for non-payment, they tune into parliament to watch the comedy that has become our legislature. It is the best show in the country for stupidity, uncouth manners, cursing and clowning. And the taxpayer is paying for all this nonsense.
What is supposed to make news headlines from parliament chambers are solutions to the nation’s myriad of challenges such as joblessness, a limping economy and delivering Covid-19 vaccines to our people.
Instead, newspaper column inches and broadcast soundbites are dominated by the perpetual foolishness of our elected officials. Parliament is supposed to be a factory of ideas and a temple of solutions; not a Namibian ‘lite’ version of the MGM Grand Garden Arena where Mike Tyson bit a chunk off Evander Holyfield’s ear.
