Mentally disturbing each other
Mentally disturbing each other 0 It is a very normal occurrence for individuals to experience feelings of anxiety when faced with everyday life issues from making important decisions, to writing tests or problems at one’s place of work. Feeling anxious is a very natural emotion which we are all familiar with. However, anxiety disorders are very real mental disorders which cause so much distress that it interferes with normal life. The different types of anxiety disorders that exist are panic disorders, generalised anxiety disorder, phobias and social anxiety disorder. The symptoms that can be experienced by someone suffering from anxiety orders may include trouble sleeping, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, dry mouth, nausea and muscle tension, amongst other things. Now although I haven’t personally been clinically diagnosed, I have found myself at the centre of more panic attacks mostly caused by social anxiety, than I care to mention and it is safe to say that it is the most hellish experience I’ve ever had. The worst thing about suffering from certain types of mental disorders such as anxiety disorders, mood disorders and eating disorders, is that the people in your environment have a hand at causing you to ‘lose it!’ People can be so insensitive, inconsiderate and downright mean that their behaviour just pushes others off the proverbial edge. As social beings, we must acknowledge that our actions heavily affect one another especially in terms of psychological, emotional and mental wellbeing. Move with the awareness that you could be setting off anxiety and panic attacks and making others pull the triggers of the proverbial guns that they are holding to their heads, you might be the cause of making someone cry themselves to sleep and depriving them of their manic states which they so desperately crave in order to balance out the other side of the bi-polar coin!!!! You could be ruining lives! So try to be a better person and stop breaking broken people! I’m not saying that these mental illnesses are caused by our social interactions with each other, that would be crazy, pun intended. However we must recognise that mental disorders and disturbances are multidimensional and extremely dynamic, as are the causal factors. Causation can occur as a result of both nature (our genetic makeup) and nurture (our upbringing and environment), of which the latter is the only one we have some sort of control over. A word to the wise: You never know what type of hell a person is going through so try to be a decent human being as best you can! The good news about anxiety disorders is that they mostly do get better with the right type of treatment which depends on the type of anxiety disorder you have. Medications which can relieve symptoms and psychotherapy such as cognitive behavioural therapy which teaches people productive ways of thinking, behaving and reacting to anxiety-inducing and fearful situations are available. Other alternative methods or complementary treatments of coping with anxiety or anxiety disorders are meditation, yoga, massage therapy and naturopathic medicines.
