PDM win at OpuwoPDM win at OpuwoSwapo candidate triumphs in Otjiwarongo by-election There was a mixed bag of results for Swapo in two by-elections held on Monday. Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) candidate Uaurikua Kakuva won Monday's Opuwo Rural Constituency by-election in the Kunene Region.

Three candidates took part and a total 3 141 votes were cast via ballot papers.

Kakuva garnered 2 066 votes to retain the constituency for the official opposition.

Nudo's Kapukatua Kuvare came second with 640 votes and Swapo's Steyn Katupa ended third with 435 votes.

The by-election was necessitated by the resignation of Kazeongere Tjeundo, who contested for a seat in the National Assembly last year on a PDM ticket.

Mbakera wins at Otjiwarongo

Meanwhile, Swapo candidate Marlay Sharlay Mbakera won the Otjiwarongo by-election that also took place on Monday.

Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) returning officer for the by-election, Jafet Karamata, said the 44-year-old Mbakera won with 2 910 votes, followed by independent candidate Erastus Mbumba, who got 1 020 votes, while Landless People's Movement (LPM) candidate Sebeteus Guiteb came in third with 752 votes. Karamata said a total of 4 707 votes were cast, of which 25 votes were spoilt.

Approximately 22 000 eligible voters registered for the by-election, which was necessitated by the death of Julius Neumbo in a road accident on 10 December 2019 between Otjiwarongo and Okahandja.
