Electronics maker Samsung has delayed international shipments of the Galaxy Note 7 amid reports of exploding batteries.
Reports of two device batteries exploding in Asia have been circulating the internet, with numerous videos being posted online. The authenticity of the videos could not be confirmed. However, a Samsung representative told Reuters that shipments had been delayed owing to additional tests into product quality.
Reports suggested that charging the device without the original charger led to the damages.
Despite the rumours, numerous major retailers in South Africa are featuring the device on pre-order and Samsung South Africa told Fin24 that the local availability date was “still on track”.
Recently, Fin24 reported that Samsung South Africa announced that the Note 7 local availability date had been pushed back to September 23, later than originally planned. It was previously reported that the device would be available from September 9, but the company issued an earlier statement confirming the new availability date.
The highly anticipated ‘phablet’ smartphone was launched in the country in early-August, boasting a major upgrades and newer features when compared to its predecessor. The Note 7 features a 5.7 inch display, new iris scanner, more powerful processor and bigger battery than previous models.
