The reported outbreak of malaria in northern Namibia is said to be the most dangerous form, with the highest rate of complications and deaths.
World Health Organisation (WHO) representative Monir Islam says it has been found that most of the confirmed cases are attributable to Plasmodium falciparum, which is associated with high levels of parasites in the blood and has the highest death rate of all types of malaria.
“This is an emergency and should be handled as such,” Islam warned yesterday.
