World Championship a stepping stone to glory

Retired Olympian Frank Fredericks says getting a medal at the athletics world championships is a stepping stone to winning an Olympic medal.
Fredericks says Namibia should immediately start preparing for the next Olympic Games four years from now.
“We now have to prepare for the next four years so that they can qualify already at the world championships and start going for medals,” he said.
He said the country cannot just hope that its athletes will get lucky and win Olympic medals.

Chinese eye completion of mass housing

Ten of the 48 bidders for a contract to complete unfinished Mass Housing Project houses at Keetmanshoop’s Tseiblaagte and Krönlein neighbourhoods are Chinese.
This, reported the Tender Bulletin of 5 – 11 August, is despite the Ministry of Works and Transport’s restriction to 100% Namibian-owned construction companies or joint ventures between 100% Namibian-owned entities with equity participation not less than 51% owned by previously disadvantaged Namibians.

Swapo women jostle for positions

The Swapo Party Women’s Council is scheduled to hold its elective congress at the end of this year, with prospective candidates already campaigning vigorously.
The battle for the top post is expected to heat up when the women’s league meets later this month for its central committee meeting to iron out issues pertaining to the elective congress, which is expected to take place at Keetmanshoop in December.

Media role in gender issues is vital

Although Namibia has made good progress in the area of gender equality, the country has been warned not to be complacent.
The United Nations (UN) resident coordinator in Namibia, Kiki Gbeho made this remark at the fifth Gender and Media Summit in Windhoek yesterday.
Highlighting Namibia’s achievements that include being ranked fifth in Africa in gender parity in parliament, having a national gender policy, national gender and GBV plans of action and gender responsive budgeting guidelines, Gbeho however said there are areas that still need improvement.

Hostel father expected to plead today

An Otjiwarongo hostel supervisor who is facing ten counts of rape involving ten boys in his care will plead today in the town’s magistrate’s court if his legal representation is sorted out.
Mervin Ngujapeua, who is charged with multiple counts of rape that he allegedly committed in the course of several years, appeared in court yesterday, but because his lawyer had not been paid the case was postponed to today.

Brakwater heist accused guilty

A former employee of the Fidelity Cash Management Services Group was found guilty as an accomplice to robbery with aggravating circumstances involving the theft of N$3.7 million.
The heist of cash in transit took place on 29 December 2004.
The court found that Jan Julius, who was the driver of the security vehicle carrying the cash, had pre-arranged with a hitchhiker and other perpetrators to commit the robbery.

Struggle kids turn more violent

Another violent confrontation occurred between the so-called struggle kids and the Namibian Special Reserve Force outside the Swapo headquarters in Windhoek on Tuesday afternoon.
If reports are anything to go by, the struggle kids have become increasingly more hostile over the last couple of months, blocking the B1 road between Okahandja and Windhoek, hurling stones at civilian vehicles, and clashing violently with the police on more than one occasion this year.

TUN slams government

The Teachers Union of Namibia (TUN) yesterday joined the Namibia National Teachers Union (Nantu) in reminding government that teachers will not accept the proposed 5% increment in salaries.
Nantu has set a 22 August deadline, after government last week asked for time to consult Cabinet on the teachers’ demands.
Describing the proposed 5% as insulting, TUN said their initial demand was 12%.

Drowning believed to be suicide

The Oshana police on Wednesday afternoon retrieved the lifeless body of 42-year-old Gideon Nehale from the NamWater dam in Oshakati. He is believed to have committed suicide a week ago following a gruesome panga attack on his lover.
Police at the scene identified the body saying that they noticed while tracking Nehale last week Tuesday for a vicious attack on his 32-year-old lover, that Nehale’s tracks disappeared near the dam.
The deceased’s family has been informed.

Mistress, wife in dispute

The Oukwanyama Traditional Authority found itself in a complicated fracas with two women fighting over a cattle post.
The cattle post forms part of the estate of a man who died about two years ago and each of the two women claims to be the heir to the cattle post.
It is further alleged that the late man’s family is in support of one of the women who has been living at the cattle post and has two children with the man, saying she is the heir, because his legitimate wife has no children with him.

Ex-magistrate to stand on 15 charges

A former magistrate of Oshakati, Melanie Theron, who faced 18 charges of corruption and bribery, was discharged on three counts yesterday by Judge Nate Ndauendapo.
He, however, ruled that she must be placed on defence on the remaining 15 similar charges and will have to answer on those charges.
Theron was arrested in August 2011 on 18 charges of corruption, bribery and extortion stemming from the time she was employed at the Oshakati Magistrate’s Court between 26 May 2011 and 15 August 2011.

Helao Nafidi saga drags on

Helao Nafidi councillor Ester Ndatala Nghidimbwa who was handpicked by Swapo and replaced Lucia Nghililewanga, who had been voted into office, has threatened to take legal action against the council if the ruling party does not rescind its decision to remove her from office by today.
This is according to a letter dated 17 August from her lawyer Henry Shimutwikeni to Helao Nafidi Mayor, Eliaser Nghipangelwa.

Police get cold feet

The Okahao police, called to a drowning incident at the weekend, watched on haplessly as an Amarika man and two others removed the lifeless body of a 6-year-old boy, who died in a well while trying to fetch water. The police told Namibian Sun that they were afraid to jump into the well as it looked dangerous.
The boy has been identified as Martin Andiyatuye Iipinge, a learner at the Amarika Primary School. Iipinge went missing on Saturday evening and was only discovered by people who went to collect water from the well the next morning.

Pharma plant plans advanced

Everything is on track for the government’s new pharmaceutical plant except the funding that would realise this ambitious plan.
Minister of Finance Calle Schlettwein last week confirmed government’s plan to establish a “pharmaceutical capacity plant”, adding that the authorities were looking at attracting potential investors. Schlettwein also pointed out that the pharmaceutical plant will not be a public entity but will be run privately.

WHS shine at Momentum rugby finals

Windhoek High School (WHS) made sure they rose to the occasion when it mattered most as they won the Super League Momentum Rugby Finals match on Saturday.
Playing in front of a great crowd at the Hage Geingob Stadium, WHS beat Windhoek Afrikaanse Privaatskool (WAP) 47-27 in what is traditionally considered the main match of the schools’ tournament.
WHS drew first blood with a penalty by WAP responded with a drop goal to level the scores at 3-3 early on.

Another lover killed

An Otjiwarongo woman has been brutally killed at the weekend by her 40-year-old long-term boyfriend who hacked her head with a machete.
According to police spokesperson Chief Inspector Kauna Shikwambi the victim died instantly as was identified as the 28-year-old Frieda Nambahu.
“The suspect is expected to appear in the Otjiwarongo Magistrate’s Court today. Her next of kin has been informed,” said Shikwambi.

No bail for suspected poachers

Seven alleged rhino poachers were refused bail last week in the Omararu Magistrate’s Court following protests and petitions by the community against their release.
The case has been postponed until 29 August for further investigations.
The control prosecutor Louis Chegune confirmed to Namibian Sun that no bail was granted for the alleged poachers and that they were remanded in custody.
Last week during the bail application of the seven suspects, a group of more than 80 members of the public protested the granting of bail for the alleged poachers.
