Lobby for SADC Parliament continues

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Parliamentary Forum (PF) will continue advocating for the transformation of the Forum into the SADC Regional Parliament in order to address issues of regional and common interest.
Speaker of the Namibian National Assembly, Peter Katjavivi spoke yesterday during a media briefing on the outcome of the 37th Plenary Assembly of the SADC-PF, which took place from July 5-11 in Durban, South Africa.

Ugly allegations levelled at RA

A 63-year-old woman has been shot dead, allegedly by her 30-year-old son, at Onaizimba in the Omusati Region following an argument over chores.
It is alleged that Sarah Kauna Shimuna was shot once in the forehead with a 9mm pistol on Sunday following a quarrel with her son.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Anna Kunga told Namibian Sun that the suspect, who is expected to appear before the Outapi Magistrate’s Court today, was arrested in Oshakati on Wednesday.

No reason for police intervention, struggle kids say

Some members of the Children of the Liberation Struggle, testifying at the inquest into the shooting of Frieda Ndatipo, maintain there was no reason for the police to intervene in their protest as they did not prevent anybody from entering the Swapo headquarters in Katutura.
They all denied seeing any of the so-called struggle kids throwing stones at or threatening the police with sticks.
One of the struggle kids, Ndamononghenda Nghindimbwa, yesterday testified that they were just singing songs. She said she not see or hear that anybody carried a gun.

It's a sin and shame to die poor, Katrina tells San

The Minister of Education, Arts and Culture, Katrina Hanse-Himarwa, this week warned the San community not to die poor because she said it is “a sin and a big shame”.
Shortly after a three-hour closed-door meeting with a technical educational team of the Tsumkwe Constituency, the minister convened a public meeting at the Tsumkwe Senior Secondary School Hall that was attended by teachers and parents.
Hanse-Himarwa urged parents to see to it that it becomes an absolute must for their children to attend school in order to break the cycle of poverty.

‘Poachers won’t win’

The police are determined to get to the bottom of the rhino poaching problem regardless of the status of the people involved, Commissioner Ndahangwapo Kashihakumwa, who is leading an anti-poaching operation in the Etosha National Park and surrounding areas in Omusati and Kunene, has warned.
On Wednesday, a team of investigating officers was sent from pillar to post by three suspected poachers who had pledged to give their full cooperation to the police.

Fight against violence is mere lip service

The Namibian government is not serious about combating gender-based violence and other related issues that have developed into a pandemic during the last decade, a senior United Nations official says.
Neil Boyer, the UN Development Programme Deputy Resident Representative, told Namibian Sun that the money committed by the government is simply not enough.
“Our feeling is if you really want to look at government’s priorities you look at how they are allocating their budget. Rhetoric aside, pretty pictures aside,” he said.

Govt urged to engage AR before July 31

Local experts have called on the government to talk to the Affirmative Repositioning (AR) campaign leaders before July 31, while adding that the police and army are not the answer to the land crisis.
This comes after an urgent meeting yesterday between the Council of Traditional Leaders and Vice-President Nickey Iyambo, where the chiefs said they would not allow any land grabbing in their areas of jurisdiction.

Woman shot, dies after bar stampede

A 19-year-old woman was shot by a security guard and succumbed later to her injuries in the Katutura State Hospital after a bar stampede incident in the capital.
According to the police, the security guard was trying to prevent a huge crowd from entering the bar when the scuffle ensued.

Land demands justified - RDP

The Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) has also joined the contentious debate surrounding the land issue as well as the housing crisis in the country. Newly elected RDP president Jeremiah Nambinga told journalists yesterday that recent calls headed by the Affirmative Respositioning (AR) movement to occupy land were justified. Nambinga also warned Namibians against being exploited by corrupt politicians who want to exploit the land issue to instigate violence.

Shack crash victim wants compensation

A 35-year-old man, who narrowly escaped death after a police officer crashed into his shack on the night of July 5, has opened a criminal case against the officer to claim compensation.
Zebedeus Kharuxab told Namibian Sun that the value of the items damaged is N$10 000 and items lost include a television set, bed mattresses, computer table, DVD player, radio, washing machine, a kettle and the corrugated sheets to repair his shack.

Poo thrower threatens to strike again

An Okahandja pensioner who last week dumped human waste at the entrance of the Nau-Aib Okahandja Municipality branch says that he will continue pulling this stunt if the sewerage problem persists.
The 66-year-old Immanuel Namubeb said that his motive for spilling five litres of human waste at the doorstep of the reception of the Nau-Aib municipality was his way of expressing disappointment for the council’s failure to attend to his stinking problem.
Namubeb said he had reported his sewerage problem a fortnight before.

New FMD scare in Zambezi

There is another suspected outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) reported in the Linyanti Consituency, southwest of Katima Mulilo in the Zambezi Region.
The announcement, made by the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry, comes hot on the heels of the lifting of the ban on animal movement in the region early in July.
According to the ministry, 39 cattle are suspected of being infected after a farmer reported a possible case on July 10 near Malundu. Samples have been collected and results are still pending.

Swapo expulsion plot thickens

The drama within Swapo seems to be drifting the ruling party further into troubled waters with the looming expulsions of its youth politicians.
Also adding to the confusion is Swapo acting president and Head of State Hage Geingob’s announcement to work with some of the would-be expelled politicians at government level - a move contrary to the decision of the Swapo Politburo, which he chairs.

Dax demands 'Rukoro plots'

The newly appointed advisor to the Hardap regional governor, Alfred Stephanus Dax, has criticised the Rehoboth Town Council for failing to implement the recommendations of the Rukoro Report of 1992.
Dax, a former Swapo parliamentarian, also rapped the town’s leadership over the knuckles for “inefficiency and for failing to do what they are appointed to do”.
The Rukoro Report recommended making 3 000 erven at the town available to black people, and 2 500 to the Rehoboth Basters.

Shifeta has no beef with Harry

The Minister of Environment and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta, says the international media have taken his comments about Prince Harry’s visit to Namibia out of context and blown them out of proportion.
Reports in the British media had it that Prince Harry came under fire in Namibia for his ‘private visit’ to help with rhino and elephant conservation.
Shifeta yesterday said the reports are devoid of any truth and should be retracted as they are harmful to the country’s image.
