Water crisis needs urgent solutions

The just announced Committee on Water Supply Security consisting of cabinet members and technical experts, have been given less than a month to come up with an implementation plan on how to avert the water crisis in Windhoek.
Minister of Agriculture, Water and Forestry John Mutorwa yesterday unveiled the Cabinet Committee on Water Supply Security and Technical Committee Expert members.

Balloon pops on car finance

Banks will have to rethink their vehicle financing options after new regulations governing vehicle sales were gazetted yesterday.
Key among the changes made to the country’s Credit Agreement Act, which takes effect on 1 August 2016, is elimination of the option to buy at 0% deposit, as well as a stipulated maximum financing period of 54-months.

Geingob demands governor apology

President Hage Geingob has written to Omaheke Governor Festus Ueitele asking him to apologise to the nation for reportedly making tribal utterances. Ueitele has been accused of making tribal statements after saying some members of the OvaHerero community are “backstabbers who practice double standards and do not seem to respect other tribes”. The conversation was tape-recorded. The governor has since addressed the media on the issue, claiming that the tape recorder was tampered with. Read more about Geingob demands governor apology

The Minister of Environment and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta said Namibia needs to climate-proof economic activities and at the same time capitalise on opportunities such as renewable energy or energy-efficient technologies.
Shifeta made these remarks when he recently addressed the Association for Local Authorities in Namibia (ALAN) congress in Oshakati on shaping the future of the Namibian people towards eradication of poverty for sustainable development.

Stranded hippos need saving now: Sampofu

About 100 hippopotamuses are stranded in the Sampisi river channel which flows from the Linyanti River in the Zambezi Region.
These hippos are practically living on land as the water source which they rely on is drying up due to severe drought and poor rainfall experienced in the region for the past four years.
Hippos are amphibious animals and spend up to 16 hours per day in water.
Zambezi Regional Governor Lawrence Sampofu is thus calling for immediate action to rescue the hippos.

Aupindi’s trial postponed

The trial of the former managing director of Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) Tobie Aupindi and his Italian business partner, Antonio Di Savino who are both facing fraud charges, has been postponed to 2017.
Magistrate Ndapewa Celma Amadhila yesterday postponed the trial to 20 July 2017.
The state is alleging that Aupindi and Di Savino provided false information to an Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) officer.

‘CHEC doesn’t sell jobs’

The China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) has warned the public not to fall prey to unscrupulous CHEC workers and some members of the public who are demanding money in return for jobs at the engineering company at Walvis Bay.
Yandisa Mlomo, who claims to be a victim of the scam, says a syndicate operating at the company in Walvis Bay demands money from desperate jobseekers, promising them employment in return.
When Namibian Sun contacted Usi //Hoebeb of Jezreel Communications, the public relations company for CHEC, he advised Mlomo to open a criminal case.

OTB Sport sponsors Facebook Lounge tournament

OTB Sport has extended its relationship with the organisers of one of the fastest growing multi-code tournaments in Namibia after announcing its sponsorship of the Facebook Lounge Tournament, which takes place in Ondangwa on 6 and 7 August.
The sport apparel and equipment provider gave the organisers balls, trophies, medals, T-shirts for the officials as well as nets that will be used for the football and netball games.

Botes backs Shilongo to succeed in SA’s PSL

They may be considered as similar players but Namibia’s Henrico Botes demonstrated his class when he gave a glowing report of his compatriot Benson Shilongo.
Both players have joined South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) club Platinum Stars and may be competing for the same spot as they are both strikers.
In fact, the pair replaced each other during a Brave Warriors friendly match against Ghana in March last year at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in the Ashanti Region of that country.

Huge drug bust at Rehoboth

Well-placed sources at Rehoboth have told Namibian Sun of a large drug bust at the town, with at least ten drug smugglers and dealers arrested last weekend, but the details remain sketchy.
In some of the incidents that have been confirmed by the police, a woman was found with 45 Mandrax tablets, five half Mandrax tablets, seven quarter Mandrax tablets and five balies of dagga with a total value of N$2 950.

Two Etosha poachers nabbed

Two men, aged 32 and 40, were arrested by members of Namibian police’santi-poaching unit in Etosha.
They were found in possession of unlicensed firearms. The police reacted to a tip-off from a member of the public who said the men were planning an incursion into the park.
The police said they had not yet determined whether the two men were linked to previous rhino poaching cases, but one of the suspects is linked to an elephant poaching case outside Etosha that took place during May this year.

Farmers beef up export battle

With no cattle having left the country since the introduction of South Africa’s new livestock import regulations that came into effect on 1 July, Namibian farmers are irate about the requirements that are forcing them to test their entire herds for diseases such as Tuberculosis amounting to thousands of dollars.
At an open day that was held by the Meat Board of Namibia, farmers expressed their frustration with South Africa and said that the Namibian government must immediately address the situation.

Runners brave chilly conditions

The Nedbank Citi Run lived up to its promise of providing great fun as family and social athletes joined the elite runners in taking part in the competition, which was held in the capital yesterday.
With temperatures reaching near freezing conditions it was expected that the turnout might be low.
Instead people from all walks of life may their way to the starting point for the 5km, 10km, 21km and 42km races.
So great was the interest that the organisers actually ran out of numbers to give the runners.

Benson shines at prestigious race in London

Namibia’s Johanna Benson once again demonstrated her star quality when she won a gold medal at the IPC London Grand Prix, which took place at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on Saturday.
Benson clocked 1 minute 08.51 seconds on her way to winning the T37 400m at the competition which saw only selected athletes competing.
In the process the Namibian walked away with US$2000 (N$28 581) as a reward for her hard work.

Scholtz wins Cricket Player of the Year

Senior National Team player, Bernhard Scholtz was awarded as the Cricket Namibia’s player of the year at the award ceremony on Saturday.
Scholtz is rated on the HQ cricket as the most valuable player for Namibia National Team, and has taken 59 wickets but due to illness he missed the later part of the cricket season.
His team mate Steven Baard was awarded as the player’s player of the year, while the women’s national team captain Irene van Zyl walked away with the senior ladies Cricketer of the year.

ELCRN prevails over council challenge

The court challenge by some disgruntled members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Namibia (ELCRN) to have the ELCRN bishop’s decision declaring the election results of the new church council as null and void be revoked, was dismissed on Friday in the Windhoek High Court.
The challengers claim they are the rightful members of the ELCRN church council and that the declaration to nullify their election must be set aside. Out of the 15 members of the council only three were newly elected while the rest retained their positions.

Omatala going for N$2.5m

Businessman Erastus ‘Chicco’ Shapumba will have to fork out N$2.5 million in order to acquire a 1.6-hectare piece of land at Oshakati, which is considered prime property.
Shapumba’s company, Mouse Properties cc, recently won the bid to acquire the old Oshakati Open Market.
Last week, the Oshakati Town Council placed a notice in newspapers, inviting members of the public who are objecting to the sale of the property to make written submissions before 13 August 2016.
