Communal farmers in the dark

The Ministry of Agriculture Water and Forestry (MAWF) is in a process of constructing a meat processing plant in Ongwediva for farmers in the Northern Communal Areas (NCAs), but the farmers are not aware of project.
Ironically, the Namibian National Farmers Union (NNFU) cried foul earlier this week over government non-action in terms of establishment processing facilities within the NCA, which stretches from the Zambezi to the Kunene Region.

The Nkasa Lupala Tented Lodge was crowned as the tourist establishment that is the most responsible in the country.
Coming in second place was Wolwedans Boulders Camp and in third place was Gondwana’s Etosha Safari Camp.
In the category for tourist operators, Tourvest Destination Management Namibia/Sense of Africa walked away with first prize.
In the second place was Ultimate Safari and in third was Pack Safari.
The Responsible Tourism Awards were launched last year at the Namibian Tourism Expo, under the banner of tourismus Namibia.

Two farmers nabbed with illegal firearms

Two farmers in the Otjozondjupa Region were arrested last week for keeping unlicensed guns and ammunition, bringing the total to five people arrested for similar offenses.
Schalk Burger Willem Oosthuizen was arrested on Wednesday and appeared in the Grootfontein Magistrate’s Court Thursday morning on charges of possession of unlicensed hunting rifles and keeping unauthorised live bullets.

Omusati teachers' housing in limbo

Teacher housing units in the Omusati Region remain unfinished, despite construction having started in 2013.
The Omusati Education Directorate could not provide statistics about how many houses where being constructed, but Namibian Sun has learnt that in 2013, government began the construction of three teacher houses at Omutaku wAkaupa, Oikokola and Oshivanda shaNghatanga in the Etayi circuit, but these houses remain unfinished.
Teachers are reportedly commuting from Oshikuku, Oshakati, Ongwediva and Omungwelume every day.

Hage furious over Swapo damp squib

President Hage Geingob has lashed out at the organisers of Swapo’s belated 56th anniversary celebrations at the Katutura Multipurpose Youth Complex, which saw a pathetic turnout this past Saturday.
The celebrations, which were scheduled for 12:00, started almost two hours late, and despite the presence of Geingob, Founding President Sam Nujoma and several other Swapo stalwarts, the pavilion remained largely empty.
Former Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) leader Hidipo Hamutenya, who rejoined Swapo, was also in attendance.

Grazing dispute engulfs Ongandjera

Ongandjera King Johannes Mupongolitha Mupiya is under fire from farmers, who have expressed their frustration and resentment over 13 well-connected individuals fencing off grazing areas that include government boreholes, which provide water to livestock.
These illegal fences have not yet been removed by the Omusati Communal Land Board and the Ongandjera Traditional Authority.
This past Friday, the king met with the disgruntled farmers, who told him that the peace in the area is under threat, and that he needs to do something urgently to restore it.

Rhino horn smuggling verdict next month

The judgement which has been described as Namibia’s biggest rhino horn smuggling case to date, will finally be delivered next month.
Four Chinese nationals stand accused of trying to smuggle 14 rhino horns worth more than N$2 million out of Namibia.
The case has been postponed until 22 June for judgement.
Magistrate Alexis Diergaardt postponed the hearing last week, after hearing closing arguments in the Windhoek Regional Court in Katutura.

Soaring numbers of desperate pensioners

Various stakeholders, who attended a public hearing in the Oshana Region, have supported a motion in favour of the construction of old-age homes, saying there is a need for the neglected elderly to be taken care of properly.
The public hearing, which took place at the Oshana Regional Office, was part of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Gender Equality, Social Development and Family Affairs’ visits to all 14 regions.
The event was attended by businesspeople, a few pensioners, social workers and other members of the local community.

Topnaars seek greater control over !Nara

The Topnaar community living on the banks of the Kuiseb River in the Namib Desert hope to gain greater control over the !Nara plant, with the enactment of the proposed Access to Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge Bill.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources is currently undertaking countrywide consultations with traditional communities on the Bill.

Ex-magistrate wants to fight rape charge from home

The State and the defence have closed their arguments in a High Court appeal by a former magistrate to be granted bail for alleged rape, after the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court in Katutura had initially refused to free him.
Judge Alfred Siboleka, who presided over the matter at the Windhoek Central Prison, reserved judgement until 8 July.

Geingob lashes ‘disruptive forces’

President Hage Geingob has lashed out at “disruptive forces” in the country, who are “capitalising on the ignorance of people”, while trying to create social unrest.
Speaking at the launch of the Swapo Party School yesterday, Geingob said former liberation movements, which are now in power, are being targeted, with some questioning how Swapo can be in power for so long.
“When we were fighting, did they say we were fighting for too long?” Geingob asked.

Illegal guns hidden in ceiling

Bail was denied to a hunting farm owner in the Otjiwarongo Magistrate’s Court yesterday, who is charged with six counts of being in possession of unlicensed and illegal firearms and ammunition.
Police discovered a trove of military equipment and memorabilia at his farm in the Otjozondjupa Region last week.
Georg Engelhard, 49, a registered professional hunter, made his first court appearance, following a police raid at his farm Georg-Ferdinandshöhe, situated near Kalkfeld, last week Thursday.
He is the fifth farmer arrested in this regard.

NMH commits to SME development

Namibia Media Holdings committed over N$1 million to promoting SMEs and towns across the country over the past month as part Namibia Town of the Year competition.
NMH committed N$300 000 towards the One Economic Foundation in advertising space for SME promotion and advertising space in the Namibian Sun after 300 SMSes were cast at the gala dinner fundraising event in votes for Namibia Town of the year.

Namibian fighters ready for battle

Walvis Bay based Namibian MMA & Kickboxing Academy fighters are competing at the inaugural Arnold Classic Africa competition in Pretoria from 27 May to 19 June.
The event is being launched in South Africa as a multisport and exhibition extravaganza. It includes a three-day Health and Fitness Trade Expo and 30 000 people expected to attend where approximately 10 000 athletes will be in action.
