Fists fly in parly

A brutal fistfight broke out in the South African parliament yesterday as security guards ejected opposition lawmakers in an ugly fracas that underlined heightened political tensions over Jacob Zuma’s presidency. About 20 Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party members, who were wrestled from their seats by plain-clothed guards, had refused to let Zuma speak and furiously shouted down the Speaker, Baleka Mbete. As Zuma looked on impassively, the EFF lawmakers fought back to try to remain in the chamber before they were physically removed through a side door.

World champs with a difference

Namibia is set to host a world championship of a different kind on 7 - 10 June this year.
The Hunting Rifle Shooting World Championships may not be familiar to many people but the event will come under focus when it hosts only the second championship of its kind.
Namibian Hunting Rifle Shooting Association committee member, Mike Baartman explains that the sport was officially developed in 2011 when it was realised that, there is a need to provide hunters with an opportunity to improve their shooting skills.

Dubbed, the Tropizone Aqua Kalahari Open, this event will see the winners of the first Timeout Series event in April, mixed champions Carmen Curschmann and Jan-Eric Sack as well as mixed social winners Bentje and Freidja Mehnert competing.

Beach volleyball players will get a chance to display their skills at the second Timeout Series event, which will take place at the Tivoli Southern Sky Guest Farm on Saturday and Sunday, 21 and 22 May.
Dubbed, the Tropizone Aqua Kalahari Open, this event will see the winners of the first Timeout Series event in April, mixed champions Carmen Curschmann and Jan-Eric Sack as well as mixed social winners Bentje and Freidja Mehnert competing.

Four struggle kids languish in custody

The four struggle kids, who are accused of assaulting and robbing a bus driver, continue to languish custody, with the State unable to say whether it would oppose bail yesterday, as the docket was not available during the court proceedings.
When the defence counsels Florence Gaes and Mbushandje Nthinda inquired about the possibility of bail for their clients, they were told by prosecutor Susan Nyatondo that it was difficult to ascertain whether she would be opposing bail, as docket was not here.

Namibia Tourism Expo officially opened

The 18th edition of the Namibia Tourism Expo was officially opened a while ago by the Minister of Environment and Tourism Pohamba Shifeta at the Windhoek Show Grounds. Arguably the biggest tourism gathering in the country, organisers of the show have promised a bigger and better event this year.  It is jointly sponsored by Namibia Media Holdings (NMH), Nedbank and Old Mutual Namibia and this year it will take place under the theme ‘Community’ from 18 to 21 May. Experts to testify about American's mental state

Two psychiatrists and a clinical psychologist are expected to testify in the High Court trial of the American murder accused Marcus Thomas, to determine whether he is fit to stand trial or not.
Judge Christie Liebenberg consequently postponed the matter yesterday to 28 and 29 July for the testimony of the two psychiatrists.
The case has also been remanded to 29 August for the evidence of the clinical psychologist.

Rapist lured girls with bread

A man, who is currently on trial for multiple counts of rape involving two minor girls, who he lured to his home with the promise of bread, is already serving an 18-year jail sentence, after being found guilty of the rape of an 11-year-old girl three years ago.
Sagaria Gowaseb is facing six counts of rape of two minor girls, aged 9 and 10, during his current trial at the Otjiwarongo Regional Court.
It is alleged he committed these crimes over a period of several days in March 2013, while free on bail.

Resettlement anger brews

The Ministry of Land Reform has denied allegations that predominantly people from northern regions of the country are being resettled in the Hardap and the //Karas regions.
The ministry has reacted to claims by the traditional community of Kai-//Khaun at the Hoachanas settlement in the Hardap Region, who are alleging that “people from the North” are being resettled on surrounding farms, while the local community is being sidelined.

First Wellness Games scheduled for weekend

The inaugural Wellness Games are slated to take place at the Khomasdal Stadium on Saturday and Sunday 21 and 22 May.
The event will see teams from various ministries and government departments competing in 7-a-side football, netball, volleyball and tug-of-war.
Speaking at the draw for the tournament Gabriel Katuuo, a sport officer in the Ministry of Sport, said that the ultimate aim of the event is to bring colleagues from the different governmental sectors closer.

Third Dr Hage Geingob Cup launched

Three teams that have already booked their spot in the third edition of the Dr Hage Geingob Cup have promised thrilling football come August.
Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns who brought along Orlando Pirates for the competition said they will be more prepared come 6 and 7 August.
Sundown’s representative Trott Molotto said his team is looking forward to defending the title and taking it back home for the second time.
The current PSL champions won the cup in the first edition of the competition in 2014 and successfully defended it last year.

Pay back the money - NSFAF

The Namibian Student Financial Assistance Fund (NSFAF) is ready to locate at least 16 669 students, who received loans, grants and scholarships between 1997 and 2010, but who failed to pack back the money.
These loans, grants and scholarships are valued at over N$479 million.
Most of these recipients are likely to have completed their studies by now, and those employed are expected to pay back their loans, whether they graduated or not.
NSFAF has appointed a technical partner - the Tribesmen/NICS joint venture - to trace these students.

Thousands are expected to flock to the Windhoek Show Grounds, where the country’s biggest tourism gathering, the Namibia Tourism Expo, was yesterday officially opened, and promises loads of activities for visitors.
Now in its 18th year, the Namibia Tourism Expo is taking place under the theme ‘Community’ from 18 to 21 May.
It is jointly sponsored by Namibia Media Holdings (NMH), Nedbank and Old Mutual Namibia.

Worker plunges to death

A 60-year-old man, who was painting at Namibian Breweries, fell through a roof made of fibreglass, and later died in hospital from his injuries.
The man was identified as Henny Beukes
The incident, which took place on Wednesday afternoon, was confirmed by the Ohlthaver & List Group spokesperson Francois Olivier. Beukes had been working for Decora Construction Services for nearly two years.

Young Warriors desperate for win

Namibia’s Young Warriors are fresh and ready to face South Africa tomorrow in the 2017 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations second round first leg qualifying match taking place at the Sam Nujoma Stadium.
The match will start at 15:00.
The team’s coach Gerald Güther is confident of a positive result following the Young Warriors’ return from a training camp in Ghana.
“We had a very productive training camp in Ghana, where we did intensive training with a lot of lessons from our interactions with local teams,” he said.

Welwitschias get World Cup experience boost

The Windhoek Draught Welwitschias, who are due to face the Leopards in Potchefstroom at 19:00 this evening, will be able to call upon two players that featured at the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
Prop Casper Viviers, who plays as a professional in France, is one of the first arrivals for Namibia’s participation in next month’s World Rugby Nations Cup that is due to take place in Romania. It will be his first match in the Currie Cup qualification tournament.
Outside centre JC Greyling also makes a return after being side lined for two matches following a rib injury.

N$5.7m Brakwater heist trial heats up

The State has argued that Fidelity Security Services driver Jan Julius facilitated and assisted a cash-in-transit robbery, in which N$5.7 million was stolen along the B1 highway near Brakwater on 27 December 2005.
Prosecutor Anita Malherbe Meyer yesterday submitted during the closing of the State’s case that Julius was instrumental in the robbery.
So far the police have only recovered N$3.39 million of the stolen money in South Africa.
The money belonged to First National Bank, Bank Windhoek and Nedbank Namibia.
