Cops apologise after couple’s crime horror

An armed home invasion in the early morning hours last Saturday, by assailants wielding guns and knives, marked the third criminal event in less than a month for acclaimed chef David Thomas and his partner.
According to Thomas, the latest incident, during which he and his partner’s lives were threatened by three aggressive assailants for close to an hour, was followed by police work that left the couple “speechless” in its ineptness.

Sleeping pills linked to murder

A Rehoboth family, whose daughter was shot dead by her husband, is furious at the police for allegedly not responding in time to their frantic phone call for help, but are also baffled by the killing, which happened after the suspect woke up from a sleeping pill-induced nap around midday.
Franzelde ‘Zellie’ Beukes, 25, died on Monday, after being shot with a hunting rifle by her husband, who had apparently awoken in a zombie-like state, before heading to his safe to get his firearm, while claiming there was intruders in his house.

!Oë#Gân protestors barred from festival

!Oë#Gân Traditional Authority community members have been barred from entering a recent cultural festival in Okombahe, where they had hoped to express their dissatisfaction with Chief Immanuel /Gáseb inside the premises.
The group say they will submit a petition to the relevant authorities soon, after being barred from entering the festival, which took place on 30 April.
The community members had intended to demonstrate their disgruntlement with /Gáseb inside the cultural festival, which takes place annually.

Water crisis closes Coca-Cola production lines

The Coca-Cola Namibian Bottling Company (CCNBC) has halted two of its production lines, including the one handling its locally canned products, which will now have to be imported – a move that may soon result in higher consumer costs.
This past Friday the company announced the closure of the two production lines, as a result of the ongoing water crisis, warning clients this may lead to “disruptions in supply” countrywide.
The company said “can products will be imported from South Africa”.
In the short-term, prices will not be adjusted.

Retired with no regrets

Former Commonwealth welterweight champion Paulus ‘Ali’ Nuumbembe is proud of the way he ended his boxing career and has no regrets. Nuumbembe recently told Namibian Sun that he has no qualms about how his professional boxing career ended, despite not reaching his goal of winning a world title. “I am happy with my boxing career and feel that I have done my part as a Namibian boxer as I have managed to win a Commonwealth title. I am a proud retired boxer,” he said.

Gome doubts Cosafa call-up

While many are worried about his lack of game time at Bidvest Wits, the stylish Wangu Gome is not deterred by that, saying he is still learning a lot from the club in the South African top flight.
The 23-year-old moved to Wits shortly after Namibia won the Cosafa Cup last year, but has not been getting sufficient game time at the club. Gome was arguably one the best Brave Warriors players during the Cosafa Cup last year.
However, national coach Ricardo Mannetti left out Gome during the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers home and away ties against Burundi.

Pumas hand Welwitschias a thrashing

The Steval Pumas ran in seven tries to one to thrash the Windhoek Draught Welwitschias 47-7 (halftime 35-0) in their new provincial tournament rugby fixture at Ermelo High School, Ermelo, on Saturday.
The victory catapulted the Pumas into third position on the log standings while the Namibians remain entrenched at the bottom of the table and still searching for their opening victory after five matches into their campaign. The win also kept the Pumas hopes of qualification for the second half of the tournament alive.

No beds, many rats

Women at the children’s ward of Katutura State Hospital on the seventh floor, have been dumped on mattresses, while they say they have to stay awake, afraid rats might reach their sickly children. When Namibian Sun visited the hospital this morning, in one of the rooms a group of women could be seen laying on flimsy mattresses in a room with their children. “Some of us have been here since January. They just gave us the mattresses and told us to sleep here. It’s getting colder and some of the kids are developing flu but what can we do?” the mother said. Read more about No beds, many rats

Para-athletes impress at SA champs

Namibia’s elite Paralympic athletes impressed at the South African Open Championship, which took place in Bloemfontein last weekend.
The Namibia Paralympic Committee (NPC) took 12 athletes to the event.
All 12 of the athletes have qualified for the Paralympic Games by recording ‘A’ and ‘B’ qualifying times.
Some of Namibia’s top able bodied athletes also graced the event with Ernst Narib (400m specialist), Hardie Maritz (400m hurdles), Roger Haitengi (triple jump specialist), and upcoming athlete FC Pieters all attending the event.

Air Namibia employee faces SA drug charge

An Air Namibia employee, who was arrested recently on drug dealing charges in South Africa, has been released on R1 000 bail.
According to Wimpie van Vuuren, acting spokesperson of the national airline, Sidney Bilankulu appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court this past Friday, and was released on bail, together with his co-accused.
Van Vuuren said Bilankulu, who was initially thought to have been an Air Namibia cabin crew member, is actually employed as one of the company’s ground personnel at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.

Rehoboth man appears for wife’s murder

Pieter Beukes, who stands accused of killing his wife Franzelde Beukes with a hunting rifle in their Rehoboth home last Monday, made his first appearance in the local magistrate’s court this past Friday.
According to prosecutor Victor Mubumulwa, the suspect has been denied bail, because police investigations are still at an early stage.
Beukes, who was represented by lawyer Kobus Visser from Koep & Partners, remains in custody, as police investigations continue.

NTB, NWR face restructuring

The long awaited national tourism strategy has proposed restructuring exercises for the Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) and the Namibia Tourism Board (NTB).
This comes hot on the heels of the scandal involving the Kora All-Africa Music Awards, which saw about N$28 million being transferred from the NTB’s marketing budget to the organisers of an event that is yet to take place, after it was cancelled in March.

Rats overrun children's ward

A rat infestation at the Katutura State Hospital has parents and patients living in fear, as the rodents run riot, sparking fears that they may be spreading disease and even death.
It has now reached a point where the parents no longer feel safe to bath at night, and are fearing for their children’s lives, as well as their own.
Katutura State Hospital Acting Superintendent Dr Mwadina Shiweda said yesterday that management is aware of the rat problem at the country’s referral hospital, and that they are working it.

Toddler blamed for house fire

A family of seven, who witnessed their home going up in flames on Sunday evening, say they believe the fire was started by a three-year-old child, who was playing with matches in one of the rooms.
When the media arrived yesterday at the five-bedroom house, situated in Oshakati West opposite the Independence Stadium, they were greeted by scenes of despair and destruction. Family members are now sleeping in tents.
According to 49-year-old Saara Iipoto Walende, who said she has lived at the house since 1983, the incident was shocking.

Shocking violations led to deadly crashes

Serious safety concerns have been unearthed within Namibia’s aviation industry, following investigations into the three aircraft accidents that occurred just outside the capital, in which a total of five people died.
A full-scale investigation has been launched into the January crash of the Cessna 425, in which three seasoned pilots were killed, after it was found that serious violations had occurred.

Brain damaged and paralysed

A mother has been left broken and without answers, after an operation on her son’s fractured arm at the Katutura State Hospital left him completely paralysed and unable to speak.
Kamalata Kandombua now has to change the diapers of her 10-year-old son, not knowing whether the once lively boy, who loved playing, will ever speak again.
When Namibian Sun arrived at the Katutura State Hospital this week, it was greeted by the sight of a thin boy wearing a baby diaper.
