The lack of safe drinking water and sanitation in many of Windhoek’s informal settlements is a serious violation of basic human rights, legal experts say.
Besides the rest of Namibia, “in Windhoek alone there are so many different forms of violations of this right,” Legal Assistance Centre constitutional human rights lawyer Corinna van Wyk told Namibian Sun yesterday. Van Wyk explained that the LAC research project is aimed at educating Namibians about the fact that access to water and sanitation is a basic human right.

With the impending threat of at least 40% water cuts at the end of the year the construction industry could face a possible mandatory slowdown next year, with concerns that even a temporary stop to new projects could affect the industry severely.
The suggestion to temporarily clamp down on tenders for big construction projects in Windhoek once the dams run dry was met with concerns that the ripple effect of such a move would be severe.

Beast out of Shark attack

The Coastal Sharks have taken a gamble by side-lining the feared Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira as they look this weekend to topple Super rugby leaders Waikato Chiefs, who have an under-performing scrum.
The Beast’s absence from today’s clash has been attributed to a planned workload for leading Springboks but the absence of the hulking prop and Sharks captain will be a relief to the hosts as they battle to remain competition leaders.
The Sharks are in buoyant mood as they look to back up from their narrow win against the defending champions Otago Highlanders.

President Hage Geingob says that the value of trade and industry development is not in the construction of huge shopping complexes and other infrastructure, but rather in the creation of jobs and other opportunities for those who are being kept on the economic fringes of society.
Speaking at the official opening of the Ondangwa Trade and Industrial Exhibition (OTIE) on Tuesday, Geingob said: “The value of trade and industry development is not in the aesthetic appeal of shopping malls and plazas, huge trading complexes and large factories, but it is what these activities bring.

There is trouble coming

Democracy is certainly on the wane in Namibia. Maybe we should put it more bluntly and say, democracy is in a stark decline in Namibia. Swapo maintains its foothold and is strengthening its power base by the day.
Ministers have been admonished for speaking their minds and not toeing the so-called party line. Swapo members are to sing one tune and to dance to one rhythm only. That is if they want to maintain party favour and continue to ascend the ranks.
