Pacquiao’s journey to final payday

Twenty-one years after clambering through the ropes for his first professional fight, Manny Pacquiao will make the long walk to the ring for what could well be the final time on Saturday in Las Vegas.
It will complete one of the most vivid rags-to-riches journeys in a sport that is famous for them, an odyssey which has taken him from a US$20 (N$303.6) purse to a reported US$20 million (N$303.6 million) payday for this weekend’s finale against Tim Bradley.

Rosh Pinah application to restrain striking workers fails

An urgent application brought by the management of Rosh Pinah zinc mine for an interim order to restrain more than 200 workers from interfering with operations, intimidating non-striking employees and obstructing them from doing their work, has been dismissed by the Windhoek Labour Court.
Judge Petrus Unengu said the applicants are creating an impression that the situation at Rosh Pinah mine is critical and that damage will be done if there is no order.
He argued that this is not the case.

Woman accused of murder appears in court

Susana Nelumbu, 46, who is accused of having fatally stabbed another woman on Tuesday, appeared in the magistrate’s court at Oshakati yesterday on a murder charge.
According to Omusati police spokesperson Sergeant Anna Kunga, the victim, Nuugwanga Ndanyengwa Alugodhi, 30, was stabbed four times and died instantly.
The incident happened at the shebeens at Onampila village on Tuesday.
Sergeant Kunga said the murder followed a long period of animosity between the two
women.

Welwitschias ready for Currie Cup acid test

Namibia’s return to South Africa’s Currie Cup competition will not be easy as they are set to take on the Free State Cheetahs in Bloemfontein tomorrow.
The Windhoek Draught Welwitschias make a return to the competition for the first time since Namibia gained independence.
Good news for local fans is that the match will be televised live on pay channel SuperSport at 13:30 Namibian time.

Kameeta tired of slow progress

Poverty Eradication Minister Zephania Kameeta has called for an urgent investigation into the lax behaviour of some government officials who are ignoring President Hage Geingob’s call to prioritise implementation of government projects this year.
Kameeta said some officials were behaving as if it was business as usual. He also criticised officials for disregarding Finance Minister Calle Schletwein’s call for prudent financial management.

Senseless murder in shebeen

A 25-year-old woman was shot dead in Osho Bar in Windhoek’s Okuryangava area on Friday.
According to the police, Julien Kauika threw a bottle at a security guard, who retaliated by shooting her.
At Swakopmund, a taxi driver was arrested on a charge of attempted murder after shooting a man in the head.
According to police reports, the shooting victim had attacked a woman who was making a telephone call. He kicked the woman and grabbed her phone when she fell.

NAU resists NEEEF

The Namibia Agricultural Union is preparing its comments on the disputed National Equitable Economic Empowerment Framework (NEEEF) for submission to the Office of the Prime Minister.
According to the union this will be done through two channels.
Firstly the Namibia Employers’ Federation (NEF), to which the Agricultural Employers’ Association (AEA) of the NAU is affiliated, has already obtained a legal opinion and drafted a document for submission.

Public relations body elects new leaders

Namibia’s public relations practitioners are braced to see their profession elevated to recognised levels of competence and expertise, and develop a new generation of leaders within the communications industry.
This was the message that resonated throughout the latest annual general meeting (AGM) of the Public Relations Institute of Southern Africa (Prisa) Namibia, held on 16 March 2016.
The meeting saw the election of 15 new committee members, including a new chairperson.

New business plan for Zambezi Waterfront Tourism Park

Following the commissioning of a forensic audit into the affairs of the Zambezi Waterfront Tourism Park, Cabinet has directed tourism minister Pohamba Shifeta to submit a new business model and road map for the tourist attraction.
The government recently decided to halt operations at the park following a string of allegations of inefficient and dishonest administration that put 58 jobs on the line.

USave opens in Havana:

The Shoprite Group last week celebrated the opening of its latest USave branch in Windhoek’s Havana area. In launching the new branch on Thursday, the South African-based food retailer said it was excited at the chance to create an expected 300 new jobs for people in the surrounding area. The new outlet brings to 79 the number of shops run by the group in Namibia, and its number of employees to 4 379. The Shoprite Group is comprised of a number of food and retail brands, including Shoprite Checkers, OK MiniMark and Hungry Lion.

School sport receives financial boost

The Namibia School Sports Union (NSSU) has received a donation of close to N$400 000 from the Coca-Cola Namibia Bottling Company.
The N$377 000 sponsorship will cover three sport disciplines at school level.
The company’s managing director, Frik Oosthuizen, said they were committed to remain involved with the youth and sport.
“This has been our most important sponsorship for years and we will continue to invest in school sports and youth matters,” he said.

Ongwediva people want speed bumps

Residents of Ongwediva in the Oshana Region are pleading for the construction of speed bumps on a section of the main road that passes through the area, following the death of an eight-year-old boy on Friday.
Layan Muskwei, who was hit by a car late in the afternoon, died that evening. He was the second victim of what residents described as reckless driving by motorists who hold street races on the stretch of road with a 60km/h speed limit.
“We need streetlights and speed bumps on this section of the road immediately because many lives are being lost on this road.

Mostert denied bail

Bail has been denied to a farmer from the Otjozondjupa Region who was arrested after a cache of weapons, ammunition and military uniforms was discovered on his farm.
Johannes Mostert, 53, owner of the farm Swartmodder located about 135km south of Otjiwarongo, appeared yesterday in the Otjiwarongo Magistrate's Court for a ruling on his bail application.
Mostert’s lawyer, Willem Visser, said he would appeal the ruling in the High Court on Friday.
The case has in the meantime been postponed until 20 April for further investigation.
