Syndicates exposed in Etosha rhino poaching

The police have made significant progress in their investigation of the recently discovered mass killings of rhino in the Etosha National Park.
The death toll is expected to rise, if information at the sites of buried carcasses prove to be correct. A large number of suspects have been arrested and the list includes employees within the park.
The Oshana police regional commander, Commissioner Ndahangwapo Kashihakumwa, is heading a team of investigators permanently deployed in Etosha since June 1.

Ndeitunga to dispatch senior cop to Lesotho

Namibian Police Chief Sebastian Ndeitunga yesterday said he has 72 hours to identify a senior detective to join a SADC team to investigate the death of Lesotho’s former army commander, Lieutenant-General Maaparankoe Mahao.
This follows an extraordinary summit of SADC leaders which discussed the increasingly volatile situation in Lesotho.
Mahao was shot by government soldiers in his home last week, in a killing that has been condemned by the United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU).

Driver in deadly accident gets bail

The young driver who allegedly killed three men standing on a pavement in Hochland Park on Saturday was granted bail of
N$6 000 yesterday.
Morné Mouton, 18, appeared in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court on charges of culpable homicide and the court heard that he had alcohol in his blood.
Magistrate Jermaine Muchali postponed the matter to December 8 for police investigation and laboratory test results.
Mouton, in a neck brace, was looking down most of the time and appeared emotional as he consulted with his counsel, Ray Rukoro.

AR movement scores first victory at Katima

According to documents shared on social media by Job Amupanda, founder and leader of the Affirmative Reposition (AR) movement, 1 000 plots have been made available to a youth committee at Katima Mulilo.
According to the documents, the plots offered by the Katima Mulilo Town Council will be serviced.
Those who receive the plots have been warned that they cannot sell or trade them.
Also, it was stressed that any construction on these plots must meet the council’s planning requirements.

Killers of security firm owner guilty

Judge Naomi Shivute yesterday convicted Willem Kawulefelwa Valombola, Toivo Kashipolo and Fillipus Shishiveni Nomongula of the murder of Hams Security Company owner Andries Petrus de Jager in November 2009.
Shivute said the State had met all the requirements to prove that the three had acted with common purpose.
“Each accused was present and performed an act of association,” she said before announcing the guilty verdict.

Fix house prices, IMF tells government

The International Monetary Fund has urged the Namibian government to look at conservative economic policies to address the country’s escalating house prices which, according to the institution, are an emerging risk.
An IMF delegation, led by Jiro Honda, visited Namibia yesterday.
The mission met with Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, Minister of Finance Calle Schlettwein, the Governor of the Bank of Namibia, Ipumbu Shiimi, other government officials and representatives of the private sector and development partners.

Seibeb claims national MTB title

Costa Seibeb last weekend won the elite men’s race at the National Mountainbike Championships, which were held in Walvis Bay for the first time.
The race, held under the auspices of the Namibian Cycling Federation (NCF), delivered a lot of winners.
Among the winners on the day was Thea Friedlingsdorf, who took first place in the girls’ under-12 event.

Omusati resists canal removal

Residents of Omusati have called on the government to come up with an alternative that does not include removing the Calueque-Oshakati canal, which is the main water source for hundreds of communal farmers living along the 150-kilometre concrete-lined canal.
During a consultative meeting on Monday between traditional, church, and regional leaders, as well as local government, farmers and community members in the Omusati Region, participants were in agreement that unless the government found another solution, thousands stood to lose.

Kupferberg woman identified

The woman involved in the Kupferberg murder saga at the end of last month has been identified as Karen Angilley.
Police yesterday confirmed to Namibian Sun that although the woman is a witness in the murder, her name may be released to the public. The police said there are no suspects yet and investigations into the murder continue.
No arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Marius Christo Mostert, 44, in the Kupferberg area a few weeks ago.
His family has urged that the name of the woman who was with him on that fatal night, must be made public.

Mysterious death at struggle kids’ camp

The so-called children of the liberation struggle are mourning the death of a group member who was found dead at the weekend.
The body of 35-year-old Sion Shemuvalula was found around lunchtime on Sunday in his shack at the camp in the Okahandja Park informal settlement north of Windhoek.
The group’s spokesperson, Abraham Hamupembe, told Namibian Sun yesterday that the struggle kids and fellow community members were shocked about Shemuvalula’s death. According to him, Shemuvalula did not show any signs of illness.

International NGO joins genocide fray

An international civil society organisation has called on German authorities to acknowledge genocide atrocities against the OvaHerero and Nama communities.
The call comes on the eve of the centenary celebrations to mark the end of German Southwest Africa tomorrow. During German rule, German troops brutally massacred OvaHerero and Nama people.
The NGO alliance “No Amnesty on Genocide!” did not mince its words when it took to task German Federal President Joachim Gauck, the government delegation headed by Chancellor Angela Merkel, and her Parliament.

Murdered boy’s mother wants justice

The mother of the boy who was allegedly killed by his father on Sunday evening says she wants to see justice done.
Stella Simbo told Namibian Sun that when a person kills someone nowadays you hear that the murderer is unstable.
“I want justice done,” said the mother in her Katutura home.
Simbo also warned people to stop speculating and gossiping about the facts of the murder.
“People must stop talking stories. If they were in my shoes they would know how I feel.”
She said nobody knows what type of person the suspect is.

Confusion over Katima plots as Cabinet holds land caucus

The mayor of Katima Mulilo, Charles Matengu, has denied reports that the town council has withdrawn the 1 000 erven that were set aside for landless youth, while Cabinet is expected to hold a special land caucus today.
Namibian Sun has learnt from reliable sources that there has been political pressure to rescind the council’s decision, as it was unfair to those who have been on a waiting list for plots at the town.

At its last council meeting, the City of Windhoek expressed concern over the approval of Exclusive Prospecting Licences (EPLs) in the Southern Basin Aquifer area south of the capital without consultation with the City’s Environment Management Division and some without environmental impact assessments (EIAs).

Education Ministry receives Omuhonga Primary School report

The Minister of Education, Arts and Culture, Katrina Hanse-Himarwa, last week instructed a delegation from her ministry to submit a full report on the situation at the Omuhonga Primary School near Okanguati in the Kunene Region where learners are sleeping out in the cold.
Last week Friday, Kunene Education Director Simon Tsuseb and his team arrived at the school to assess and confirm reports that over 100 learners at the school were sleeping in tents and in the open due to a lack of hostel infrastructure.

MPs lash out local banks

Minister of Information and Communication Technology Tjekero Tweya has lashed out at commercial banks for failing to provide financial assistance to “penniless entrepreneurs”.
Tweya made these comments in parliament during debate on proposed amendments to the Marine Resources Act.
It is then that it came to light that commercial banks reportedly do not accept allocated fishing quotas as collateral for loans.

Hospital staff threaten to close gates

Workers at the Onandjokwe Lutheran Hospital have threatened to deny anyone access to the primary health centre for the Onandjokwe District of the Oshikoto Region if their outstanding salaries are not reflected in their bank accounts today.
During a peaceful demonstration held yesterday at the hospital, following a delay in salaries, nurses and labourers said they are prepared to stop work until each staff member’s June salary is paid in full.

Rent control imminent

A high-level government caucus on land has recommended the inclusion of provisions in the Consumer Protection Bill to regulate the property rental market as well as the conduct of estate agents and property developers.
An interim report outlining the decisions made during the caucus was tabled in the National Assembly by Swapo parliamentarian Bernadette Jagger yesterday.
According to the document, this proposal was made to “prevent the current exploitation of tenants by landlords”.

Thieves on the run, loot recovered

It took the police at Ondangwa less than an hour to recover a number of stolen items and seize a getaway vehicle used in the commission of a crime in the early morning hours of Wednesday.
It is suspected that at least six thieves broke into the Equipment Africa outlet at the town and got away with a variety of items, including a money box containing a cheque of N$15 000 and N$5 000 in cash, a generator, two laptops, a battery charger, an air compressor, a chainsaw and other
tools.

New veterans’ party is futile - Namvet

Namibia War Veteran Trust (Namvet) chairperson Jabulani Ndeunyema claims that a group of former Koevoet and SWATF soldiers have formed a political party.
He said he was not at liberty to disclose the name of the new party.
Warning other Namvet members against joining the party or associating with them, Ndeunyema said those wishing to join should resign as members of Namvet.
“Namvet leaders must refrain from mingling with any doomed political party formation or they must resign as Namvet members,” Ndeunyema said.
