Briefing exposes cracks in union

A press conference called by a top official of the Swapo-affiliated National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) yesterday was said to be unconstitutional because the federation’s president and his two deputies were not consulted.
NUNW secretary-general Job Muniaro yesterday bashed the government over the proposed solidarity tax, the planned lowering of the retirement age, and an alleged plan to sell the Etosha National Park.
Right after the press conference other senior unionists called Namibian Sun with complaints that they were never consulted by the federation.

Etosha is not for sale

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism has denied an allegation that the Etosha National Park or any part of it is for sale.
The ministry responded to an allegation by National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) secretary-general Job Muniaro that Etosha was being auctioned or sold. He claimed that he had information that somebody was buying the park, but refused to give any details. In a statement issued yesterday, the ministry said the allegation was untrue and misleading to the nation. Read more about Etosha is not for sale

The Namibia National Farmers’ Union (NNFU), representing communal farmers, has expressed concern about racial division within the farming community.
A meeting was held at State House yesterday and was attended by a delegation from the NNFU as well as President Hage Geingob and several cabinet ministers.

Stray cattle cause discord in Oshikoto

Cattle that are left to graze freely without herders looking after them have become a cause of discord in the Uukwanambwa district of Ondonga in the Oshikoto Region.
The animals stray into recently cultivated fields and damage the young mahangu plants, causing widespread unhappiness.
The head of the district, senior headman Wilhelm Lidker, says the residents’ unhappiness is understandable.

Racism alleged at German private school

Parents insist that racism, although subtle, is institutionalised at the Deutsche Höhere Privatschule Windhoek (DHPS) despite the school management’s denial that children are discriminated against based on their skin colour.
This follows an incident where a learner allegedly told a classmate that he could not be invited to her birthday party because her mother said no black people were allowed in their house.

Farmers to support Food Bank

President Hage Geingob yesterday appealed to al farmers to contribute two cattle each towards the Food Bank to win the war against poverty.
Geingob made the appeal when he met leaders of the Namibia National Farmers’ Union (NNFU) at State House.
Geingob said poverty caused people to go hungry. He said although the country was rich in resources there were huge disparities and that must be addressed.

Workers risk losing jobs over late buses

Domestic workers who are up at 03:00 in the mornings say they are at risk of losing their jobs because municipal buses never arrive on time.
Because of the unreliable bus service these women, most of whom are older than 40, are forced to walk in the dark or hitch-hike to get to their jobs in upmarket suburbs such as Ludwigsdorf or Klein Windhoek.
The workers also claim that they are verbally abused when they arrive in Klein Windhoek in the dark and are even suspected of being criminals.

Rising food prices worry Swapo

The first Swapo Politburo meeting of the year expressed concern about the sky-rocketing cost of essential commodities such as water, energy and food.
This was said by the ruling party’s secretary-general Nangolo Mbumba yesterday.
This comes weeks after Namibian Sun reported that a massive price shock would hit Namibian consumers later this month when Namib Mills was expected to announce another price increase on staple foods.

Eight developing countries to enhance trade volume to US$500b

A group of developing Islamic countries have agreed to boost their trade volume from the existing US$120.5 billion (N$1.9 trillion) to US$ 500 billion (N$7.9 trillion) by the end of 2018, officials said yesterday.
Trade ministers from the D-8, grouping eight Islamic countries, met in Islamabad and agreed to operationalise their Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) from July 1 this year, Pakistan Commerce Minister Khurram Dastagir said.
The member countries are Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.

Rehoboth CEO denies land sale

The newly appointed Rehoboth town clerk, Christophe Uirab, has distanced himself from a public notice announcing the sale of 30 residential plots to one company.
Although the notice was issued in his name and published in the Rehoboth Gazette on February 12, Uirab said he had not been consulted at all.
The plots, ranging between 375 and 500 square metres, were sold at an average of N$16 875 to Mobesa Developers.
“I only came to learn of it when it was published; it does not have the blessing of the CEO’s office,” Uirab said.

Kavango protest gets green light

Rundu will be the scene of a mass demonstration on Saturday as residents of both Kavango East and West express their dissatisfaction with what they perceive as systematic marginalisation and social exclusion.
According to the spokesman of the organising committee, Matthew Singambwe, the demonstrators are expected to converge at the Rundu Sport Stadium early in the morning. They will then march through the streets to the Kavango East regional governor’s office where they will hand over a petition.

Salute Boxing eager to flex muscles

Salute Boxing Academy no longer wants to be seen as a newcomer and it is preparing to stage its third event next month.
The stable, which was launched last year, held two boxing bonanzas at the J&P Complex at Ondangwa on August 26 and another one on November 28 at Outapi.
The team is now gearing up to hold its third event in Eenhana on March 26.
Asked if this meant that the stable would predominantly focus its activities on the North, the academy’s spokesperson, Fredrich Nghiyolwa, said too many boxing bonanzas were held in the capital.

State shows hierarchy in rhino case

The State yesterday painted a picture of the pecking order among the four Chinese men accused of trying to smuggle 14 rhino horns out of Namibia.
Li Xiaoliang, Li Zhibing, Pu Xuexin and Wang Hui yesterday appeared in the Windhoek Regional Court in Katutura for the continuation of their trial.
They are charged with trying to smuggle 14 rhino horns worth more than N$2.3 million and a leopard skin valued at N$50 000 out of Namibia. The items were found in two suitcases at Hosea Kutako International Airport on March 24 last year.

Education cancels foreign trips, overtime

The Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture has made drastic cuts in foreign trips and overtime work, which will only be allowed if it is in line with the ministry’s annual development plans.
In a circular issued on Wednesday the ministry said there were shortfalls in its remuneration budget, which now stands at N$458 287 938, and it therefore suspended all international trips for the 2016/17 financial year.

ACC clears ex-NHE boss

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has cleared former National Housing Enterprise CEO Vinson Hailulu of any wrongdoing following an investigation into possible Mass Housing tender irregularities.
Hailulu was accused of awarding a Mass Housing tender to a company whose local partner’s director is related to his wife. Hailulu has always maintained that he did not influence the decision to award the tender to Colgram in partnership with Afrikuumba – owned by Titus Nakuumba, a relative of Hailulu’s wife.
