The long-awaited case involving four expelled Swapo youth leaders and the ruling party’s top leadership kicked off yesterday with lawyer Vincent Maleka wasting no time in defending the young politicians. The highly regarded South African senior counsel has been roped in to represent former Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) secretary Elijah Ngurare, land activists Job Amupanda, Dimbulukeni Nauyoma and George Kambala.

The majority need relief

The southern African economy is in dire straits at the moment with the cost of basic necessities and staple food set to rise to unaffordable levels for those that are already living below the bread line – in the immediate future. The current exchange rate will furthermore make import prices of shortfalls in basic necessities costly and – even more unaffordable for the majority of our people already living in poverty. Court must uphold justice - Maleka

The top-notch South African lawyer, Advocate Vincent Maleka (SC) on Friday argued on behalf of the former youth leaders Job Amupanda, Dimbulukweni Nauyoma, George Kambala and Elijah Ngurare, that the court will, by granting his clients’ reinstatement, be upholding justice and give foundational value to the Swapo Party which was founded upon the principles of justice and fairness.
According to him such an order will promote faith in the judicial system, especially when the wrong is corrected.

China to fix Namibian energy woes

China has agreed to address Namibia’s power shortage with solar and wind energy as well as assist to create new ways to ensure food security through agriculture and the application of technology.
These were some of the matters discussed during a closed-door meeting between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Namibian counterpart Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah on Friday.

Gunners sink Unam in Round 18 of NPL

Otjiwarongo-based Namibia Premier League (NPL) outfit Mighty Gunners Football Club beat Unam 1-0 in Windhoek on Saturday to prevent the ‘clever boys’ from winning their first game since the start of Round two of the NPL.
Round two of the 2015/16 NPL season kicked off on January 23.
Unam lost its last two games against Rundu-based outfit Rundu Chiefs and Young Chiefs from Oshakati.
On Saturday at the University of Namibia (Unam) sports field, a single goal by Wernel Waputuaka was all Mighty Gunners needed to collect the three points in their first game of the weekend. Read more about Gunners sink Unam in Round 18 of NPL

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini declared Leicester City as English Premier League title favourites after Claudio Ranieri masterminded a stunning 3-1 victory over his side at the Etihad Stadium.
Two set-piece goals from Robert Huth, either side of a superb effort from Riyad Mahrez, allowed leaders Leicester to pull six points clear of chief rivals City and five points clear of second-place Tottenham Hotspur.

Craven inches closer to Olympic spot

Dan Craven gave his chances of becoming Namibia’s representative at this year’s Olympic Games a massive shot in the arm after winning the national road championship yesterday.
The cyclist proved to be too fast for his rivals, Till Drobisch and Costa Seibeb in a sprint to the finish to claim the title of national champion.
The event, which kicked off at the Pupkewitz Lifestyle Centre in Kleine Kuppe, had seen various categories of cyclists taking part.

Listening to all the motivation for the U/19 cricket team on the capping night by different speakers had me thinking what the boys are tapping from there.
As they set there all concentrated, I thought to myself; are we really going to make it far at the World Cup even if we are the African champs.
The positive spirit by the team captain showed to me that those boys were not just confident by the word, but had a mission to accomplish at the World Cup.

Sioka warns abusers of child grants

The minister of gender equality and child welfare, Doreen Sioka, says social grants intended to cater for the basic needs of children should not be misused, and urged community members and leaders to report cases of neglected children they know are recipients of government grants.
She was speaking during her annual address to her ministry’s staff. Sioka said 188 765 orphaned and vulnerable children were currently receiving government grants.

Retired bishop falls victim to burglary

The Omusati police are searching for the domestic worker of 85-year-old retired Bishop Kleopas Dumeni, who allegedly broke into his bedroom on Friday and stole N$6 000 and a shotgun.
According to police spokesperson Linekela Shikongo the incident took place at Okamboora village in the Ruacana Constituency.
Shikongo said the unidentified suspect, who was still on the run, was wanted on charges of firearm theft and housebreaking and theft.

Quarrel about meat ends in death

A 41-year-old resident of Omata village in the Ohaingu area of the Ohangwena Region died of injuries in the Engela hospital yesterday morning and a female suspect was arrested to face a homicide charge.
It is alleged that Thomas Keendobe was assaulted by a domestic worker who accused him of taking more than his fair share of the meat that was served for lunch on Saturday.

Shifeta warns SOEs to comply with law

The minister of environment and tourism, Pohamba Shifeta, yesterday issued a stern warning to SOEs that are not complying with the law, saying that these companies are there to make money and are not welfare organisations.
He added that SOEs falling under his ministry are being treated like spoilt babies.

Deadly malaria outbreak

The reported outbreak of malaria in northern Namibia is said to be the most dangerous form, with the highest rate of complications and deaths.
World Health Organisation (WHO) representative Monir Islam says it has been found that most of the confirmed cases are attributable to Plasmodium falciparum, which is associated with high levels of parasites in the blood and has the highest death rate of all types of malaria.
“This is an emergency and should be handled as such,” Islam warned yesterday.

Farmer found with arms cache

Nearly 10 000 rounds of ammunition, combat weapons and military uniforms have been found at a farm in the Otjozondjupa Region.
Johannes Martinus Mostert, 53, owner of the farm Swartmodder located about 135km south of Otjiwarongo, appeared in court yesterday on at least six charges.
