Teen gang-raped and stabbed

A 17-year-old girl was allegedly gang raped and stabbed several times by seven boys shortly after midnight on Monday at the New Look location in Katima Mulilo.
Regional Crime Investigation Coordinator in Zambezi, Commissioner Abner Agas says the victim reported the incident to the police in the presence of her relatives on the same day the crime was allegedly committed.

Children are still losing parents to HIV/Aids and people living with the virus are still discriminated against despite the country’s achievements in the fight against the disease.
According to Sandi Tjaronda , Executive Director of Namibia Social Marketing Association (Nanaso), patients continue to default on the life-saving anti-retroviral treatment while expectant mothers report late for prevention of mother to child transmission and some never turn up for post-natal medical care.

Teacher gets bail in case of alleged rape of pupil

A teacher accused of raping a primary school learner in the capital between May and October this year, has been granted bail.
The 34-year-old Patrick Geingob was on Tuesday granted bail of N$7 000 by Windhoek Magistrate Alvinia Gawanas following a successful formal bail application, which was brought before court by his privately-instructed defence lawyer, Garth Joseph.
The bail was granted with stringent bail conditions in that Geingob should not make direct or indirect contact with the family of the complainant or the complainant
herself.

Namibia battles with early childhood trainers

The Kunene Region has no competent early childhood development (ECD) trainers at 54% of its pre-school centres.
This statistic for Namibia’s poorest region was made public yesterday by Dr Aune Victor, who is from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
Speaking at a national ECD workshop taking place in Windhoek, Victor also shared statistics around enrolment.

Conradie in bid to tear corruption case apart

Embattled Windhoek lawyer Dirk Conradie, who is facing a host of corruption charges relating to an N$60 million MTC advertising tender, is arguing in his special plea before the High Court that he cannot be charged under a certain section of the Anti-Corruption Act, because he is not a public officer.
South African advocate Vas Soni, who is representing Conradie, argued yesterday that for a person to be charged under Section 43(1) of the Act, they must be a public officer who has in addition used their position in a public body to commit alleged corruption.

Cassinga survivors plan painful pilgrimage

Over 150 Namibians, who survived the horrific Cassinga Massacre in Angola in 1978, are planning to visit the site next year, for the first time since that fateful day.
They say they are finally ready to say farewell to their fallen heroes, at the mass grave where they were buried.
Thousands of lives, including those of innocent women and children, were lost on May 4, 1978, after a South African airborne attack on a Swapo camp.
It has been described as one of the darkest days in the history of Namibia’s liberation struggle.

A list of harsh water restrictions have been announced with immediate effect for Windhoek, with the shockingly low rainfall sparking fears that the dams that the supply the country’s central areas will run dry by the middle of next year.
Not complying with the host of water savings measures will result in a fine of N$2 000 or six months in jail.

State wants forfeiture of Caprivi ‘witchcraft material’

The 30 men convicted in the long-running Caprivi high treason trial have until this coming Monday to indicate whether they will oppose an application by the State that they forfeit a list of items, including “witchcraft material”, firearms, ammunition and T-shirts with logos promoting secession from Namibia.
The items the State wants the accused to forfeit include a ring made from snake skin, a small piece of brown wood, a dark red clay pot containing traditional medicine and a plastic container with dried herbs in it, which the State believes was used to perform witchcraft.

Archery set to welcome Africa's best

The Archery Association of Namibia (AAN) will host the 11th edition of the Federation of African Archery Championship next year.
Namibia had outbid Egypt to get the rights to stage the event which is set to take place at the DTS Grounds from January 28-31.
The tournament will also act as a qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as well as the World Games in Wroclaw, Poland in 2017.

When boxers Bethuel ‘Tyson’ Uushona and Sacky ‘Izinyoka’ Shikukutu step into the ring tomorrow, it will not only be a fight between these two boxers but also a Tobias v Tobias fight.
The pair will contest for the International Boxing Organisation (IBO) Africa Welterweight title.
Uushona trains with Tobias Nashilongo at the Soweto Boxing Academy (SBA) while Shikukutu fights at the Nestor Sunshine Tobias Boxing and Fitness Academy (NSTBA) under Nestor Tobias.
Both stables have produced World and African boxing champions.

Amupanda turns up ACC heat on Ya Ndakolo

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Director Paulus Noa says the Affirmative Repositioning (AR) movement is welcome to visit his office today and bring him their complaint about Defence Minister Penda ya Ndakolo’s close to N$ 1 million luxury hotel bill.
“If (AR leader) Job Amupanda wants to launch a complaint, we must accept it, and see if it is within the mandate of the ACC. If it is, then we will have to investigate and to follow the law,” Noa said yesterday.
The AR movement is expected to deliver their letter of complaint today.

Margaret eyes hot seat

Khomasdal North Constituency Councillor Margaret Mensah-Williams, who has just been re-elected for fourth time, says she would gladly serve as the first female chairperson of the National Council.
This follows speculation that she may get the nod for the post.
Mensah-Williams said serving as chairperson would be a great achievement for her.
“I am humbled to hear that people think I should serve as the chairperson, but it is not automatic and not my decision to make. However, I am willing and capable of taking up the challenge,” she said.

Shimbulu back as Oshakati mayor

Katrina Shimbulu is back in the saddle as mayor of the Oshakati Town Council, after she served in the position from 2007 and was demoted in 2010.
However, the council elections have now been plunged into controversy, with it emerging that a directive from the Swapo head office had been ignored in terms of the election of at least one senior office-bearer.
After serving as deputy mayor to Ben Kathindi in 2010 and then being further demoted to an ordinary councillor in 2012, Shimbulu is now seemingly back in Swapo’s good graces.

Swapo makes clean sweep in ‘troubled’ City

Swapo has once again made a clean sweep of all City of Windhoek council positions, with Muesee Kazapua being re-elected as mayor, while Fransina Kahungu will serve as his deputy with all five members of the council’s management committee also Swapo representatives.
However, a political analyst says this is not a good thing, as critical checks and balances are missing.
The five-member council management committee is made up of Swapo members Moses Shiikwa, Matilde Ukeva, Matheus Amadhila, Immanuel Paulus and Teckla Uwanga.

105 000 suffer disabled despair

Low levels of access to the education system, as well as the absence of proper rehabilitation and vocational training for those with disabilities, has resulted in in some estimating the unemployment rate among Namibia’s disabled to be as high as 90%.
This is according to Vice-President Dr Nickey Iyambo, whose office is also responsible for the plight of the about 105 000 Namibians living with disabilities.
The majority of these marginalised and disempowered Namibians live in rural areas.

Witvlei to stay shut amid Agribank battle

The Witvlei Meat will not be operational anytime soon.
Witvlei Meat board chairperson Sydney Martin told journalists this past Friday that their battle with Agribank, the owners of the abattoir, is far from over.
Agribank has refused to accept a guarantee from the Sidney Martin Family Trust, which would have enabled Witvlei Meat to purchase the abattoir for N$15 million.
Martin said Witvlei had already invested millions into the abattoir and will not give it up.
He said it will only be fair that Witvlei Meat be allowed to purchase the plant.

Court bid today to end crippling fishing strike

Twelve fishing companies will today seek an urgent High Court interdict to end an illegal fishermen strike in Walvis Bay and Lüderitz, which began on October 26 and now threatens to cripple the industry.
The Mining, Metal, Maritime and Construction (MMMC) Union, the Namibia National Labour Organisation (NANLO), the Office of the Labour Commissioner and over 1 000 striking fishermen are among the respondents in the matter.
