First Division calls for sponsors

Southern Stream First Division Football (SSFD) League Administrator Mervin Geiriseb has called on the corporate world in Namibia to start investing in football at lower divisions.
The First Division is divided into three streams - Southern, North East, and North West, and none of these streams have title sponsors.
Each stream consists of 12 football clubs and the winning team of each stream at the end of the season gains promotion to the Premier League.

Google to push cloud computing business

Google said last week that a VMWare founder was taking charge of its cloud computing business as it looks to close ground on rivals such as Amazon and Microsoft.
Diane Greene, who was already on the board of directors at Alphabet-owned Google, will lead a new team combining Google for Work, Cloud Platform, Google Apps and other services hosted in the Internet cloud.

Urbanisation driving retail growth

Urbanisation is the top trend driving retail in South Africa at the moment, according to Gavin Tagg, managing director of Retail Network Services.
As more and more people come to live in the country’s economic centres, they drive a demand for more retail infrastructure, Tagg said at an event hosted by the South African Council of Shopping Centres’ (SACSC) in Gauteng this week.

Rooibos price rises as drought persists

It is not only food prices that are set to soar as a result of the crippling drought – the price of Rooibos is set to skyrocket by up to 90%.
Ernest du Toit, spokesman for the SA Rooibos Council, says the 2016 harvest could be the worst in years.
“Although difficult to evaluate the true impact of the drought at this stage, we expect it to be significant. Output losses can only be quantified between January and May of next year, once the final volume of the harvest is known,” Du Toit said.

Vulnerable to sex abuse

A shocking 270 000 Namibian children are living in poverty, with 140 000 of them experiencing these circumstances severely on a daily basis, leaving them open to sexual exploitation and being put to work for a pittance.
These figures were confirmed this past Friday by United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Representative to Namibia, Micaela Marques de Sousa, during a Khomasdal Constituency event to mark Universal Children’s Day.

Garage robbery suspect appears

A suspect in an armed robbery at the Pioniers Park Total Service Station, during which N$170 000 was stolen, has made a brief appearance in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court.
Leonard Niilenge, who handed himself over to the police on Monday, was informed yesterday that he faces charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances and the illegal possession of firearms, but was not asked to plead.
Early last week, robbers approached one of the managers at the service station and ordered him to hand over a bag filled with money.

Inability to broadcast international matches costs NFA

The Namibia Football Association (NFA) has lost N$400 000 of the money that was due to the association from the poll of broadcasting, during the Brave Warriors match against Guinea, which was staged at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on November 12.
These were the words of the NFA secretary-general Barry Rukoro during a recent interview with Namibian Sun.
Rukoro said the union had lost that much because the national broadcaster NBC is unable to broadcast international matches.

Dundee brushes off poisoning claims

The Tsumeb-based mining company responded yesterday to questions sent by Namibian Sun on Monday, following an article that was published by international non-government (NGO) group BankWatch which claimed that the waste disposal site at the Tsumeb Smelter is piling up with arsenic left from the smelting of European ore – sparking fears of soil and water contamination.
DPM spokesperson Alina Garises says BankWatch has a long history of being against mining of any sort.

A chance to get a higher rating in several international boxing federations will be at stake when Bethuel ‘Tyson’ Uushona takes on Sacky ‘Izinyoka’ Shikukutu at Ramatex on December 5.
The pair will be the main undercard when Paulus ‘The Rock’ Ambunda defends his IBO super bantamweight world title against Australia’s Jason Cooper on that date.
While Uushona holds the IBO welterweight All Africa, the fights promoter, Nestor Tobias of MTC Sunshine Academy, said that more is at stake for the winner.

Tjihuiko, six others join Swapo

It was an all-comrade atmosphere at the Swapo Party headquarters yesterday after they welcomed seven National Unity Democratic Organisation (Nudo) defectors, led by former Member of Parliament Arnold Tjihuiko. Swapo Secretary-General Nangolo Mbumba who welcomed the group said the new recruits were welcome to join the ruling party as it is every Namibian’s right to decide where they would like to position themselves. Namibian peacekeeper dies in Liberia

A Namibian police officer Cathleen Mbako-Angula, who was a mother of three, passed away on Monday while on a United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission in Liberia.
This was confirmed by Police Inspector-General Sebastian Ndeitunga, who said Mbako-Angula, 42, collapsed and was rushed to a hospital, where she was declared dead at around 23:00.
“It is regrettable to lose a member who was on an international mission assisting other nations to ensure peace and security in the countries (sic),” said Ndeitunga.

HH, Gurirab not joining Hage’s A-Team

State House has refuted claims that former Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) leader Hidipo Hamutenya and former Speaker of the National Assembly Theo-Ben Gurirab will be appointed as presidential advisors, commonly known as the A-Team.
Presidential Affairs Minister Frans Kapofi yesterday categorically denied that the two struggle veterans, who are both aged 76, will join President Hage Geingob’s team of advisors.

President Hage Geingob is to decide whether to approve a 6% salary increment for public office-bearers, following a recommendation by the Public Office-Bearers Remuneration and Benefits Commission (POBC).
Presidential Affairs Minister Frans Kapofi indicated yesterday that the commission had recommended a 6% salary hike for MPs and other senior political appointees.
This comes hot on the heels of Geingob approving massive utility allowances for public office-bearers, leading to a public uproar.

Polls open amid apathy fears

Over 400 000 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots between 07:00 and 21:00 in today’s regional and local authority elections, but voter apathy fears remain, sparking the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) to urge all those eligible to make their way to the polls.
Voter turnout for regional council and local authority elections have over the years shown a dramatic plunge, with 1992’s average 81% turnout still the highest to date.
According to the ECN, a total of 418 544 registered voters are expected to make their way to the polls today.

Savage and brutal sex attacks

Rehoboth resident Franklin Savage has been found guilty of two counts of rape, one attempted rape and attempted murder, following two brutal attacks.
Savage was, however, acquitted on a count of kidnapping, after the State could not prove this allegation beyond a reasonable doubt in the High Court.
Savage was accused of attacking and attempting to rape a woman on November 28, 2010 near Rehoboth Primary School.
He was further charged with kidnapping another woman and carrying her to Rehoboth Post Office on December 3, 2010, where he brutally beat and raped her.

Business urged to fund N$600m poverty war chest

The Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) Walvis Bay chapter has called on able businesses to contribute between N$250 000 to N$1 million each towards raising the N$600 million required to fund President Hage Geingob’s war against poverty.
NCCI Walvis Bay Branch Chairperson Tony Raw said they were looking to “initiate a prototype” that brings together business, society and government in the anti-poverty battle.
He said a committee would be established that would coordinate voluntary contributions by those who can afford to give them.

BRINGING BLISS: The Onyose Trust held its year-end function yesterday. Deputy Minister: Marginalised Communities, Alexia Manombe-Ncube, graced the event and shared some golden moments and a lunch with the children. The project, which was once owned by the Ehafo Trust, became an independent institution in 2004 and introduced two programmes - namely the now-halted community-based rehabilitation programme and a running daycare centre.

Public holiday enquiry leads to assault charge

The Okahandja police were yesterday dragged into a labour dispute, after Shoprite branch manager Christa Isaacs allegedly assaulted a 46-year-old Money Market clerk for enquiring about today’s public holiday.
Isaacs is alleged to have slammed her office door into Theopoldhine Tjaaronda’s face after a scuffle.
Tjaaronda had allegedly asked her whether the retailer will be open today.
This is after President Hage Geingob earlier this week declared today a public holiday, as the nation votes in the regional and local authority elections.

Woman ‘duped’ into prison cellphone smuggling

A 27-year-old mother of three has been arrested after allegedly trying to smuggle six cellphones into the Windhoek Central Prison, but she claims she was duped into the crime after she met an inmate on a social network site.
The cellphones were found in the lining of a suitcase yesterday and represents just a fraction of the 147 mobile phones smuggled into the Windhoek Central Prison already this year.
