City yet to declare water crisis

The City of Windhoek says it is monitoring the ongoing depletion of Windhoek’s water resources, now considered to be at a critical stage, before declaring a water crisis, probably by early next year.
Years of below-average rainfall have resulted in very low levels of the three main storage dams supplying central Namibia - the Swakoppoort, Von Bach and Omatako dams.

Wildcat strike hits fishing industry

Striking fishermen are adamant that they will not return to their posts on vessels until the government intervenes and addresses a number of issues pertaining to their conditions of employment and their call for better wages.
The fishermen are members of the Mining, Metal, Maritime and Construction (MMMC) union, which is affiliated to the Namibian National Labour Organisation (NANLO)
A source in the industry commented that it was common knowledge that a strike by seafaring personnel would adversely affect the industry.

Oosthuizen claims RCC ruined his health

The Roads Contractor Company (RCC) is refusing to consider Dr Pieter Oosthuizen’s resignation as general manager of operations as constructive dismissal despite claims that a campaign to “work him out” gave him no alternative.
Oosthuizen, who had been acting as chief executive officer five months before the expiry of outgoing CEO Engelhard Haihambo’s contract, resigned on August 12, with his last day of service being November 12.

Dirty hospital blamed on management staff

Cleaners at the Katutura State Hospital have blamed the messy state of affairs at the hospital on the hospital management under medical superintendent Dr Nelago Amagulu.
Cleaning and general staff claim that when Amagulu took over the reins in 2011 - first in an acting position before she was permanently appointed - there were expectations that she could turn the situation around for the better.

Jarman promises to run circles around opponent

“I’m going to work on my footwork, dance with him, read him and then take him out.”
These were the words of Anthony Jarman, who is fighting Christian Ukelo in a 10-round welterweight bout at the Gateway Centre in Khomasdal this evening.
The two will feature in the main bout of the Kinda Promotions fight card, which includes six other fights.
Jarman added that he is no mood to finish the fight and is likely to stop Ukelo well ahead of the 10 scheduled rounds.

Kawana out of line, says RDP

President Hage Geingob has been urged to strongly reconsider the appointment of Justice Minister Albert Kawana, who was earlier this week reported to have referred to opposition parties as “mosquitoes and frogs”.
This is according to Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) spokesperson Nghiningiluandubo Kashume, who said Kawana was abusing his power.
Kawana was quoted as saying that opposition parties are like “mosquitoes and frogs that appear only when it rains and disappear immediately the rainy season ends”.

Stop the discrimination - Iyambo

Vice-President Nickey Iyambo has condemned racial groupings in sport codes, government departments and even private companies.
He also urged retrogressive Namibians to resign from the public domain if they cannot stop such behaviour.
“We are steadfastly continuing the building of the Namibian House under the mantra of ‘One Namibia, One Nation’ and not ‘One Namibia, 11 Nations’,” he said.

Dump truck crashes into house and backyard shack

Reckless and negligent driving is suspected to be the cause of an accident at Oshakati where a dump truck crashed into a backyard shack, ripping it apart before smashing into a nearby house, causing serious damage to property.
The accident happened at Eemwandi location on Sunday evening.
People in the vicinity of the accident recounted how they had to run to get out of the way of the out-of-control vehicle.
“It is a miracle that we are still alive,” said Matti Ndalulilwa, a resident of one of the houses damaged by the truck.

Rundu vandals to appear in court

Two suspects who were caught red-handed vandalising the new Rundu shopping centre on Sunday are expected to appear before the Rundu magistrate court today to face a case of malicious damage to property.
Rundu police spokesperson Chrispin Mubebo told Namibian Sun that the suspects were arrested around 10:00 on Sunday morning after witnesses called the police.
The two brothers, who are believed to be mentally disturbed, destroyed several automatic teller machines (ATMs) and the glass doors of multiple shops at the complex and covered the walls with graffiti.

Sentencing arguments in treason trial tomorrow

The State and the defence counsel are expected to present arguments in aggravation and mitigation of sentence in the Caprivi treason trial in the High Court tomorrow.
Thirty men are found guilty of high treason, murder, attempted murder, illegal possession of arms and ammunition as well as contravention of immigration regulations. Thirty-five accused were not found guilty and discharged.
Judge Elton Hoff is also expected to give a ruling on whether some of the State witnesses would be given immunity from prosecution on offenses that they testified about.

Omake to give crime a lashing

Operation Omake, a holistic programme to combat crime, was launched in Moses Garoeb Street in Windhoek yesterday, at the site where Jacqueline, 18, and Cecilia Kuaseua, 30, were murdered on October 9.
The operation was announced last week by safety and security minister Charles Namoloh in the National Assembly.

Costs for Okahandja highway increase

The projected cost of constructing the B1 dual carriageway between Windhoek and Okahandja has increased by N$95 million due to changes made to the design of the road.
The road will now have two full lanes on both sides once the project is completed, thereby scrapping the initial converging dual and single lanes that were set to be constructed on some parts of the road.

Opposition marriage on the rocks

Just a few days after five opposition parties signed a cooperation agreement for the upcoming regional and local authority elections, one of the parties says the others are selfish and won’t share resources.
Martin Lukato of the National Democratic Party (NDP) said the agreement he entered into with Nudo, the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP), RP and CoD will not last long.
The five parties at the weekend signed an agreement to support each other in the regional council elections in constituencies where the different parties enjoy support.

Attempted kidnapping in Windhoek

Three men tried to abduct a 13-year-old girl on the Wernhil Park bridge across Mandume Ndemufayo Street in Windhoek on Saturday.
The mother of the girl, Maria Stefanus*, said she was surprised when her daughter came home from the shops in a state of fear with tears running down her face.
She had sent her daughter (whose name cannot be revealed because she is a minor) to buy groceries at Pick n Pay in Wernhil Park. The mall is a ten-minute walk from their apartment.

Chinese medicine offers hope for chronic pain

While things fall apart at the Katutura State Hospital, a traditional Chinese clinic operating there is a roaring success.
The clinic under the stewardship of Dr Yu Tiwei has become a beacon for poor and hopeless Namibians who have walked out footpaths to seek medical care which did not help at all.
One such person is Katrina Cloete, who has for years suffered tremendous pain in her shoulders and neck despite receiving various types of treatment, only to feel relief after just four days of acupuncture.

Striking fishermen head for Windhoek

More than 500 striking fishermen left Walvis Bay for Windhoek yesterday.
“We are going to continue our protest action where we will be camping at State House in Windhoek. We are doing this in order to obtain answers from the powers that be.
“We voted and deserve improved living conditions as well as answers for the issues we raised,” said the fishermen, who are members of the Metal, Mining, Maritime and Construction (MMMC) Union.
The striking fishermen arrived at the Kuisebmond football stadium with their luggage and boarded about 50 minibuses for Windhoek.
