NEW NOTES: The new and improved N$10 and N$20 notes were officially placed into circulation yesterday. Ebson Uanguta, Deputy Governor of Bank of Namibia, formally launched the use of the new notes on which the diamond icon was removed. Uanguta showed the currency to President Hage Geingob who inspected the notes and joked that he liked the diamond on the old note.

Investigating local FMD vaccines

While Namibia is spending N$600 million annually to import vaccines and pharmaceuticals for its livestock sector a delegation from China is currently in the country to help determine whether the country will be able to establish its very own vaccine production facility.
The emphasis of the vaccine facility will be on producing foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) as well as lung sickness and brucellosis vaccines.

The disciplinary committee members include local legal practitioner Joshua Kaumbi who will serve as chairperson, businessman John Walenga, Health Deputy Minister Juliet Kavetuna and Deputy Minister of Economic Planning Lucia Iipumbu as an alternate member.

School pep talks on leash

The Ministry of Education will now vet motivational speakers and their messages before allowing them to use school platforms to address learners on various issues.
This will allow the education authority to smoke out hoax speakers who are allowed on school premises under the pretext of being motivational speakers, according to a recent government circular.
In that circular, education permanent secretary Sanet Steenkamp said the ministry had observed a trend of “uncontrolled and uncoordinated” access by speakers to government schools.

Swapo takes the lead in regional elections

The Swapo Party is already leading the pack in the four ‘O regions’ and the !Nami#nus Constituency in the //Karas Region, a month before the regional and local authority elections.
That is because opposition parties did not nominate candidates for 26 out of 121 constituencies and five out of 57 local authorities.
The announcement was made yesterday at a media briefing chaired by the chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), Notemba Tjipeuja.

Stop clinging to power - Geingob

African leaders must desist from clinging onto power and retire as respected leaders, President Hage Geingob said this week.
The message was contained in a speech delivered on his behalf by Deputy Prime Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah during the opening ceremony of the African Union sixth annual retreat of Special Envoys and Mediators on the Promotion of Peace Security and Stability.

Seal products banned from livestock feed

The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry has warned farmers that the use of seal oil and seal carcass meal in livestock feed is strictly prohibited.
The acting permanent secretary in the ministry, Abraham Nehemia, said the farming community, farmers’ unions, animal feed processors, retailers as well as role players in the meat industry should be aware that the use of seal products in livestock feed is banned.
This follows an alleged incident which happened this year, where a farmer used these substances in his livestock feed.

Ishitile runs personal best at world champs

Visually impaired athlete Lahja Ishitile managed to equal her personal best at the 2015 IPC Athletics World Championships in Qatar, Doha.
But Ishitile failed to qualify for the finals despite finishing third in the women’s 400m T11 first round, heat two with a time of 1:03.21.
She still has to run in the women’s 200m T11 tomorrow and the 100m on October 27.

Chief's widow gets interdict against family

The wife of the late Kwangali traditional leader Chief Sitentu Daniel Mpasi has obtained an interim court order to recover all the assets of her late husband that family members had illegally deprived her of.
In the urgent application, Irene Mpasi said the assets in question were removed on August 8 this year.
She brought the application as the executrix of the estate of her late husband who died on December 17, 2014. She was appointed as executrix by the Master of the High Court.

Twenty senior government officials on Wednesday signed their performance agreements as part of the government’s bid to hold senior public servants accountable and help restore public confidence.
The group included ministers and Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila.
The 20 senior civil servants all signed their performance agreements in the presence of President Hage Geingob at State House.

Poverty fight gets into high gear

President Hage Geingob, who cancelled a trip to Turkey to attend a two-day Poverty Eradication and Wealth Redistribution Conference in Windhoek yesterday, said the global deadline of 2030 is too far in the future.
In an effort to achieve this ambitious goal a budget of N$50 million has been set aside for this year alone.
Efforts to eradicate poverty will include food banks that will be established with technical support from Cuban experts.

Hot weather affects athletes

Namibian athletes at the 2015 IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha, Qatar, are finding it hard to adjust to the hot weather in that country.
Guide Sem Shimanda told Namibian Sun from Doha that despite the results the competition is going well, but the weather is affecting their performance.
“Seriously, this weather here is extremely hot and it is affecting us, now we even have to train without T-shirts,” he said.
Shimanda has been running with Lahja Ishitile, who usually runs with David Ndeilenga who sustained a knee injury.

OvaMbanderu withdraw Okeseta case

The OvaMbanderu Traditional Authority under Chief Kilus Nguvauva has withdrawn a case in which they successfully restrained his rivals from proceeding with a traditional commemoration at Okeseta earlier this year.
The application before the High Court restrained Aletha Nguvauva, Erastus Kahuure and Bori Katjiuanjo or any member of the so-called Concerned Group from entering the Okeseta cemetery at Farm Groot Kunichas in the Gobabis District.

Geingob pulled into Oukwanyama squabbles

The three traditional leaders who were dismissed from their jobs by the head of the Oukwanyama Traditional Authority, Queen Martha Mwadinomho Christian Nelumbu, some years ago and who have ever since waged a protracted court battle demanding reinstatement, have now taken their case to President Hage Geingob.
Former Ongha village headman George Hikumwa, who now heads an association that advises communities on traditional matters, presented complaints during Geingob’s interaction with the residents of the Ohangwena Region at Eenhana last week.

Security guard dies in robbery

A security guard suffocated after three armed men gagged him during a robbery gone wrong at Epalela in the Omusati Region on Friday morning.
Although a post-mortem still has to be conducted to determine the cause of death, it is suspected that the security guard, identified as 22-year-old Dragot Tobias Ndakondja, died after he was bound and gagged by robbers who attempted to rob Ehafo Market in the Onesi Constituency.
