Prison brutality claims

An inmate at the Windhoek Central Prison has claimed that some wardens beat, choke and threaten prisoners. This, after four inmates from Unit Six were allegedly severely beaten by four prison wardens a week ago.
According to an inmate who spoke to Namibian Sun by telephone, a senior superintendent found one of the alleged victims of the attack in the kitchen and accused him of carrying a cell phone. The officer apparently began searching him in a hard-handed, aggressive manner.

Tragic voter apathy

By this time last year, election fever had enveloped the entire Namibia. Young and old were all excited to hit the polls. Candidates’ posters and cars draped in party colours greeted Namibians every morning. November 28 last year would eventually be proclaimed a public holiday. Sadly, for the regional and local government elections slated for this November none of the above will be a reality. Gambia no walk in the park

Brave Warriors coach Ricardo Mannetti has cautioned against taking Gambia lightly ahead of a 2018 FIFA World Cup preliminary match set for next Friday, October 9.
The coach was speaking at a press conference called to announce the squad of players that will represent Namibia during the two-legged playoff. The return leg will be played at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Tuesday, October 13.
The West African team is currently ranked 161st in the world. Comparatively, Namibia occupies the 125th place in FIFA’s ranking.

Komeya on a mission

The newly appointed Technical Director of MTC Premiership side Young Chiefs, Ace Komeya, says they will chase success with the quality of players they have in their ranks.
Komeya, a Brave Gladiators assistant coach, is relishing his appointment as Young Chiefs’ head of football affairs and is looking to make history with the Oshakati-based side.
“The team is great and we have big plans for the team,” he said.
“We have quality young players and we want to improve and be successful in our maiden season in the Premiership.

Serena withdraws from China Open, WTA Finals

World number one Serena Williams yesterday announced her withdrawal from next week’s China Open in Beijing and the WTA Finals in Singapore.
The announcement effectively ended her season.
“I am taking a proactive step and withdrawing from tournaments in Beijing and Singapore to properly address my health and take the time to heal,” the 21-time Grand Slam winner said in a statement.
The China Open first tweeted the announcement, but the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has not confirmed Williams’ withdrawal from Singapore’s year finale.

Father questions concert security

The father of murdered Unam student Simson Gobs, who was stabbed to death two weeks ago at a music festival at the TransNamib sports grounds in Windhoek, says there are conflicting versions of what happened that night.
Michael Jimmy said the organisers should have ensured proper security and lighting.
Gobs, a first-year student at the University of Namibia, was stabbed four times in the back and was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident happened around midnight on October 3.
Out of more than 3 000 revellers, no one appears to have seen what happened.

Bright future for women's football

FIFA instructor Emy Casaletti-Bwalya says Namibia is doing well in developing women’s football.
She says of all the African countries she has visited, the development programme for women’s football in Namibia is the best.
Casaletti-Bwalya told Namibian Sun yesterday that the future is bright for Namibian women’s football, because in most countries they tend to focus on the top players and when they retire there is no succession plan.

Nanso blames shebeens for exam failures

The police should ensure that shebeens operate within stipulated hours and that illegal alcohol outlets are closed down as learners start their end-of-year exams.
The request was made by Ashwell Forbes, Nanso Secretary for Education and Research. He also said families with bars and shebeens should not allow learners to sell or buy alcohol.
Forbes’s plea was contained in a letter addressed to City Police Chief Abraham Kanime.
The letter comes hot on the heels of President Hage Geingob’s statement that shebeens should be removed from residential areas.

Shifeta condemns Ankara bombings

The Minister of Environment and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta, who is currently in Ankara, Turkey, for a global climate change event, has condemned the terrorist attacks that occurred in Ankara on Saturday and expressed condolences to the people of Turkey.
Shifeta was speaking at the opening of the 12th Conference of Parties (COP 12) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
The Ankara bombings that ripped through a crowd outside the main railway station in the Turkish capital killed nearly 100 people.

Warriors progress in World Cup qualifiers

VICTORIOUS: The Brave Warriors progressed to the second round of World Cup qualifying yesterday after beating Gambia 2-1 (aggregate score 3-2) at the Sam Nujoma Stadium. A first-half goal by Willy Stephanus and a second-half strike by South African-based striker Hendrik Somaeb were enough to hand Namibia a deserving win against the Scorpions of Gambia. Namibia will now face Guinea in the next qualifying round. In the photo, football enthusiasts cheer on the national side.

Rugby heroes return home

Despite not achieving their ultimate goal of booking their first win at the 2015 Rugby World Cup, the players are satisfied with the way they have played against the world’s best rugby teams.
Welcomed by a small crowd at the Hosea Kutako International Airport (HKIA) yesterday, Namibian flanker Renaldo Bothma described the World Cup as a great experience for the team.
He said the team has learned a lot and are now looking forward to building up for the next World Cup.
Bothma said rugby is his life and he plays every game as if it is his last.

Top duo wins Hemco Paint Rally

Wilro Dippenaar and his navigator Riaan van der Westhuizen once again showed the rest of the competitors and fans why they are Namibia’s top rally team.
The duo, who won the 2014 Cymot Rally, at the weekend won the Hemco Paints Rally in a time of one hour, 13 minutes and 25 seconds (01:13:25).
The Hemco Paints Rally, which replaced the Cymot Rally, was staged at the Tony Rust Race Track east of Windoek under the organisation of the Windhoek Motor Club (WMC).
The rally is the brainchild of Dick Cornelissen from a Windhoek panel-beating and spray-painting shop.

Honour and duty forgotten

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture, Sanet Steenkamp, says it is of critical importance that the principles of honour and duty are restored in the teaching profession.
She was referring to details that have emerged about the murder of 18-year-old Jacqueline Kuaseua, a Grade 10 learner at Augustineum Secondary School, and her 30-year-old sister, Cecilia Kuaseua, in Khomasdal last Friday. The alleged killer, Ananias Kamati, was Jacqueline’s Otjiherero language teacher, with whom she was allegedly cohabiting.

Residents attack court officers

Residents of Damara Location in Katutura on Tuesday prevented the Messenger of the Court from evicting of an elderly woman and her daughter, who are tenants of a house in Max Eixab Street.
When the Messenger of Court officers arrived, the 80-year-old Teckla Dausas was apparently taking a bath.
Neighbours attacked the officers and the brawl was stopped by police officers who were patrolling the area.
The house initially belonged to Dausas, but her granddaughter, Wilma Eveline //Hoabes, later bought it from her.

Marking of exam scripts starts

The examination scripts of nearly 80 000 Grade 10 and 12 learners will be marked at the Windhoek Showgrounds over the next two months.
Teams of markers started work on September 28 already.
The Minister of Education, Arts and Culture, Katrina Hanse-Himarwa, yesterday said the papers of 36 346 Grade 10 and 42 855 Grade 12 candidates will be marked.
Hanse-Himarwa, who acknowledged that the marking venue is not ideal, said the ministry is trying to complete a dedicated marking hall as soon as possible.

N$4 billion for transport plan

It will cost the government N$4.1 billion to make the Sustainable Urban Transport Master Plan for Windhoek a reality.
The ambitious plan, which includes Rehoboth, Okahandja and the Hosea Kutako International Airport, is expected to be completed by 2032.
According to the Windhoek municipality’s public transportation manager, Clarence Rupingena, 20 of the 26 buses procured at a cost of N$90 million are expected to arrive by next month. The other six will arrive next year.
“Eighty buses are what we need to meet the current demand,” he said.

DTA challenges Swapo in the North

The official opposition party, DTA, is promising to give Swapo a run for its money in some constituencies and local authorities in the ruling party’s northern heartland.
While the ruling party has fielded candidates in all local authorities and all constituencies in the North, the DTA has decided to contest only five local authorities and eight constituencies in Ohangwena, Oshana and Omusati.
The DTA is fielding candidates for the newly created Okongo village, the border town of Helao Nafidi, Ondangwa, Oshakati and Ruacana.

Kafula says English literacy too restrictive

Swapo backbencher Agnes Kafula, a former mayor of Windhoek, says a clause requiring local authority councillors to be able to read and write English is restrictive and could discriminate against some Namibians.
The clause is contained in the Local Authority Amendment Bill now before the National Assembly.
In terms of the bill a politician is not eligible to stand for election “if he or she is not able to communicate, read and write in the official language of Namibia,” which is English.
