Pirates tagged as underdogs in Tura Derby

Bragging rights, a chance to stay top of the MTC Premiership and a chance to solidify reputations are all at stake when Orlando Pirates host Black Africa at the Sam Nujoma Stadium tomorrow afternoon.
Definitely marked as one of the standout fixtures on the domestic football calendar, both sets of players and coaches know that a good showing tomorrow will go a long way towards boosting their profiles.
On one side is Woody Jacobs, who is in the first season as head of Black Africa, while on the other is Lucky Kakuva, who was recently reinstated as Orlando Pirates mentor.

Tennis star honoured by NNOC

The Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC) yesterday rewarded tennis player Lesedi Jacobs with N$15 000 after her performance at the Commonwealth Youth Games.
Jacobs won a silver medal at the event which was held in Samoa from September 5-11.
The player told Namibian Sun that she is honoured to get such recognition.
“I want to continue doing well in future so that tennis in the country can improve,” she said.
She said she learnt a lot from other experienced players at the youth event.

Volleyball Academy to host 24-hour challenge

The Timeout Beach Volleyball Academy, owned and operated by Namibia’s national team coach James Verrinder, is bringing about a new chapter in the local beach volleyball scene.
The Academy will host the first ever 24-hour beach volleyball challenge next Saturday (October 3) on the courts of the DTS in Windhoek.
The proceeds of the event will be used to finance a new lighting system at the DTS courts and to buy equipment benefiting all players.

Sevens adventure in Windhoek

The Safland Windhoek Sevens tournament is taking place today and tomorrow, with several teams from Southern Africa competing in the two-day event.
Included in the tournament is a strong South African Rugby Union (SARU) Sevens Academy side, which touched down in Windhoek yesterday.
Neil Powell, the SARU Sevens Academy coach, called up a 12-man squad that is a combination of established Springbok Sevens players and promising members of the successful Academy programme, which is based in Stellenbosch.

Lady May in ICU after scooter crash

Award-winning Namibian Afro-pop artist and Big Brother Africa finalist Lady May was in an accident around midday on Thursday last week in Windhoek when a delivery vehicle hit her while riding her scooter.
Lady May, whose real name is Martha Namundjebo, spent the weekend in the intensive care unit of a local hospital but is said to be out of danger now.
The incident was confirmed by family spokesperson Hilda Basson-Namundjebo.
Basson-Namundjebo said Lady May is recovering from a lung injury as well as injuries to her hip and femur. She was operated on Friday.

Founding President Sam Nujoma has expressed disappointment over border disputes between and amongst various traditional authorities.
Speaking on Saturday at the official inauguration of the Ongandjera Palace at Uukwandongo and the presentation of King Johannes Mupongolitha Tweuthigilwa yaJafet Mupiya to the Ongandjera community, Nujoma said the disputes amongst traditional authorities have the potential to set our people against one another if not handled properly.

Man kills lover, son

A village near Rundu is reeling in shock from the horrific murder that took place at the weekend when a man allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend and his seven-year-old son.
The man, who is expected to spend his 45th birthday in custody after being arrested for the double murder, allegedly fought with his girlfriend over an affair with another man.

‘Robbery gangs’ torment motorists

The police are investigating two incidents in which a truck was shot at on the Kalkrand-Rehoboth road on Saturday morning, while another truck driver was almost robbed at gunpoint on the same road.
Nampol spokesperson Chief Inspector Kauna Shikwambi confirmed both cases. Relating one of the stories to Namibian Sun, businessman Simon Nambahu said during the early hours of Saturday morning, his truck was transporting bottles on the road between Kalkrand and Rehoboth when a pick-up overtook the truck.

MTC injects millions into Sunshine boxing

The sponsorship of the Mobile Telecommunications Ltd (MTC) to the Nestor Sunshine Boxing Academy has been extended for another three years.
This was confirmed by MTC Chief Human Capital and Corporate Affairs Officer, Tim Ekandjo in the capital on Thursday evening.
The sponsorship has been increased from N$ 7,5 million to N$10,374 million over a period of three years.
“The money is not given to Nestor Tobias as many people think, but to the academy,” Ekandjo noted.

Stolen gambling machines siezed

Oshana Police Spokesperson, Warrant Officer Thomas Aiymabo told Namibian Sun that traffic officers who had set up a temporary road block between Omungwelume and Oshakati noticed strange behaviour from two occupants of a Hyundai stationwagon and immediately became suspicious.
According to Aiyambo, at the roadblock the traffic officers instructed the driver of the vehicle to pull on the side of the road but that the driver ignored the instructions and sped off.

Three arrested with elephant tusks

The police’s Anti-Poaching Unit have arrested three men found in possession of elephant tusks in Katima Mulilo.
The two Namibian nationals and one from Botswana were in possession of seven elephant tusks believed to have been poached in the Bwabwata, Mundumo or Nkasa Rupara national parks.
During a media briefing at the Katima Mulilo Police headquarters in the Zambezi Region yesterday, NamPol’s Deputy Inspector-General for Operations, Major-General James Tjivikua said the three men are being detained along with the vehicle used to transport the tusks.

Geingob takes up Palestinian cause

President Hage Geingob has called for the unconditional admission of Palestine and Western Sahara as full members of the United Nations (UN) and its agencies.
Speaking at the UN Summit for the adoption of the Post-2015 Development Agenda, Geingob said the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were about inclusion and not exclusion.
Therefore, he said, the international community has an obligation to ensure that the people of Palestine and Western Sahara realise their inalienable right to self-determination and the creation of their independent and sovereign states.

Colder but no rain

A cold front that is forecast for this week will break the intense heat wave that Namibians have been experiencing.
Some parts of the country received a few drops of rain in the past week, but dam levels remain critically low and in the central area levels have dropped to below 20%.
The Omatako Dam is empty, the Swakoppoort Dam is at 23.4% and the Von Bach Dam is at 30.5% of its capacity. Last month the total level of central dams stood at 38.9%.
The total for the dams in the South currently stands at 52.5% in comparison to last year when it was 60%.

Shoprite dismisses 110 Rundu workers

A total of 110 employees at the Shoprite Rundu Mall branch are currently unemployed as their employer showed them the door following participation in a peaceful demonstration held in June.
The Regional Shop Steward, Mukonda Joseph, told Namibian Sun they were dismissed last week Friday upon arrival at their respective work stations.
Joseph says the reason for their dismissal was based on the fact that they took part in an allegedly peaceful demonstration where they demanded better wages and benefits which the shop refused to take into consideration.

Alleged killer of son, 7, spends birthday in jail

Vedislius Mbangu Mutero appeared in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court on Monday for the double murder of his girlfriend and son. The case was postponed until 24 October for further investigation.
This was confirmed by the Kavango East acting crime investigation coordinator, Detective Chief Inspector Chrispin Mubebo, who said that Mutero has been remanded in custody in Rundu.
The murder occurred on Friday night at Ndiyona, some 110 km east of Rundu at the home which Mutero was sharing with his girlfriend, Rosalia Sherengi Shitokeni, 33 and their son Ilexius Ipanda Mutero.
