The group of about 100 ‘struggle kids’ said they were part of the initial demonstrations a few years ago but heeded the call to return home and wait for the government to address their plight. They are now vowing to stay put at the Swapo regional office until they are given a positive response.

Official opposition leader McHenry Venaani says his party is looking at challenging a constitutional provision that gives the President discretionary powers when it comes the number of ministers and deputies he may appoint.
“We might not challenge this in court this year because of the elections but it is surely in the pipeline,” Venaani told Namibian Sun yesterday.
Venaani stressed that the current situation under President Hage Geingob has led to the Executive dominating the Legislature, which according to him was not the reason for last year’s constitutional amendments. Read more about Venaani to challenge bloated Executive

The sniffing of benzene is on the rise among schoolchildren, according to Geraldine Helen Kanyinga, Chief Social Worker in the Ministry of Health and Social Services.
According to her the underreporting of such incidents makes it difficult for the ministry to determine the rate of addiction.
“Last week a learner who was younger than 13 years died in the Hardap Region after sniffing benzene. The social workers picked up the smell,” said Kanyinga, adding that benzene is cheaper than alcohol.
