There are roughly seven weeks to go before the regional and local authority elections and one would not say it if one looks at the activities of the political parties.
If these were general and presidential elections, party rallies, flags and posters would be omnipresent.
Several political commentators say that President Hage Geingob, academics, and the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) are to blame for this lack of hype.

Mining and exploration company Weatherly International yesterday announced its decision to make about 220 employees at its Otjihase and Matchless copper mines redundant.
Workers at the two mines were informed of the decision by management yesterday. In a statement detailing the development, Weatherly CEO Craig Thomas said the decision was based on continuing decline in global copper prices, which had fallen by over 40% since 2011.
Current conditions had rendered both mines “commercially unviable”, he said.

A decision this week by London-based Weatherly Mining Namibia to lay off workers at two Namibian mines and focus resources on improving production at another was done in bad faith.
This was said by Namibian National Labour Organisation (NANLO) President Evilastus Kaaronda yesterday when he spoke to about 100 of the 220 workers who received retrenchment notices on Monday.
The union said it would fight the company’s decision to make the workers redundant. Kaaronda suggested that the company’s approach could be challenged in terms of the labour law.
